Abstract

This research aims to assess the income level and welfare status of corn farmers in Sidosari Village, because the level of income and welfare of corn farmers in several regions in Indonesia is lower than the indicator sets by the word bank. Various factors underlying this situation, both from internal and external of agriculture system, such as pests and diseases, and lack of public awareness regarding the use of empty lands. The study was carried out in Sidosari Village, Natar District, South Lampung Regency, which was intentionally selected (purposively) due to its status as a main corn production area in the region. The data utilized include both primary data gathered through direct observation and secondary data obtained from relevant agencies. A total of 46 farming households were chosen as respondents through simple random sampling. The research employed a quantitative descriptive approach, involving income analysis and welfare evaluation based on Sajogyo's (1997) theory. Findings reveal that the average household income for corn farmers amounts to IDR 41,975,181.08 annually, with the majority of income 81.07 percent comes from on-farm activities, specifically 71.98 percent from corn farming with an average land area of 1,07 ha and 9.09 percent from rice farming with an average rice field area of 0.16 ha. Based on Sajogyo (1997) criteria, corn farmers households per capita in Sidosari Subdistrict fell into the near poor living category at 6.52 percent, the criteria far-fairly prosperous life is 84.72 percent and the criteria for a decent living is 8.70 percent.   Keywords: corn farmer, income, welfare

Abstract

The diverse challenges faced by the agricultural sector make prioritization crucial. This approach allows stakeholders to focus on the most urgent and critical issues first before addressing lower priority ones. This study aims to analyze the main (priorities) challenges for the agricultural sector, both nationally and globally. This study employed a qualitative approach through a literature review of 100 studies published over the past 10 years (2013-2023). The findings identify 8 (eight) major challenges in the agricultural sector, namely climate change and risks of water deficits, energy, biodiversity and ecosystem services, social infrastructure, governance and policies, food supply chains, consumption patterns, and intensification of sustainable agriculture. This study concludes that achieving sustainable agriculture and food systems necessitates a robust and balanced understanding of both agronomy and ecology, enhancement of social capital through farmer and community participation, and policies that prioritize environmental preservation and human welfare while remaining unaffected by the political interests of a few parties.

Abstract

This study aims to formulate a development model for the rice-based agroindustry in Southeast Sulawesi. A mixed-method approach was employed, combining literature review, observations, and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs). Various respondents were involved including provincial government agencies, academic researchers, farmer group associations, and rice agroindustry actors. The study was conducted in East Kolaka Regency and Kendari City from February to June 2024. The results indicate that the potential locations for agroindustry development are in Konawe, South Konawe, Kolaka, Kendari City, and South Buton. The provision of industrial facilities and infrastructure is crucial, including dryers, hullers, polishers, sorters, silos, warehouses, and transportation infrastructure. The result also indicates various agroindustrial subsystems that consist of: (1) raw material procurement from within and outside the region, with flexible supply patterns and storage strategies based on partnerships; (2) production processes categorized into premium, medium, and low-quality rice, along with the utilization of side products such as husks and bran; and (3) marketing channels within and outside the province through direct sales and distributors. Management and financing schemes are implemented through four main approaches: a community-based economic involving cooperatives or farmer groups funded by the member, and supported by the government. ; private investment through internal capital and loans; government-managed and government-financed schemes; and Public-Private Partnership (PPP) schemes for infrastructure financing.   Key words: agroindustry subsystem, financing, management, potential location
