Journal of English Language and Literature (JELL) is a journal published by STIBA-IEC Jakarta. This journal is published two times a year (March and September). The main purpose of this journal is to advance and foster English Language Teaching or education, research, and Literature. The journal provides research to increase awareness, consideration and analysis of issues in Teaching English as Foreign Language or in Literature, and also promotes the interchange of ideas, and comparative studies in this field. The Journal calls for unpublished original manuscripts to be considered for publication. The papers submitted to the Journal should not have already been published elsewhere except circulated as conference presentations, nor should they be submitted simultaneously to another journal. JELL publishes the article twice a year, March and September.

Abstract

This research mainly aims to find out the types of compound words and acronyms found in CNN International news articles in the health column, which consists of 5 news articles. A descriptive qualitative method is used in this research to analyze the data. This research uses the theory from McCarthy (2002), regarding the types of compound words and the theory from Lieber (2009), regarding acronyms. The results of this research show that there are 3 types of compound words and their meanings consisting of compound verbs, compound adjectives, and compound nouns. Compound verb patterns: verb+verb, preposition+verb, compound adjective patterns: noun+adjective, adjective+adjective, verb+adjective, and compound noun patterns: verb+noun, noun+noun, adjective+noun, preposition+noun. This reseach also found acronyms used in 5 CNN International health column news.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to identify how language shift influences the attraction of the young generation to language maintenance in the West Amarasi Society in Jakarta. Mixed method research, which blends qualitative and quantitative approaches, is applied in this work. The researcher computes and examines data on language maintenance of the Timorese language in the community in Jakarta and language shift. The author breaks out data on the elements resulting from language shift, language maintenance, and societal shifts, together with the findings of interviews. Through sociolinguistic evaluation of Jakarta's west amarasi community, the study focuses on how language transmits language shift in this object

Abstract

This study is based on social interaction in a multilingual society where there is code switching and code mixing occurs. The purpose of this research is to find out what are the forms of code switching and code mixing in Belok Kanan Barcelona and the factors that exist in the film Belok Kanan Barcelona. The method used is a qualitative descriptive method which is done by recording all the data that appears in the movie. The material is also analyzed by listening techniques and note-taking techniques. Therefore, in this study the writer uses the movie as the object of code switching and code mixing analysis. Since the story is set in an international country, the movie shows a multilingual situation where the characters communicate in Indonesian, Javanese, Makasarese, English, and Spanish according to the context and situation they face. The results of this study have found 16 data, which is code-switching data as much as 6 data and code-mixing data as much as 10 data.

Abstract

The writer chose this topic and Till movie as the main sources that are analyzed because the writer sees something important that can be learned from this movie. In this research, the writer analyzes the types of discrimination and the types of responses against discrimination that happens to Emmet Till that occurs in the Till movie. There are main characters who experience discrimination, namely Bo. The purpose of this research is to explain the types of discrimination experienced by black American boy and to find out how Emmet Till responded against the discrimination. The writer used a sociological approach and qualitative descriptive methods to carry out this research. The data in this research comes from speech and actions in movies related to discrimination issues. Based on the result of the analysis, the writer found that there was only black discrimination that occurred in the movie. Discrimination in the movie is carried out by white people against black Americans.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types of figurative language used in the novel “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” by Luo Guanzhong. The research adopts a qualitative method, relying on factual data from the literary work itself and expert quotations. The focus theory is figurative language, which one of the branches in Semantics approach. The findings reveal that out of the 13 types of figurative language, only four were identified in the novel. Hyperbole accounted for 33.79% of the sentences, personification for 26.21%, symbolism for 11.03%, and metaphor for 28.97%. In the end, the writer concludes that there are only four types of figurative language out of thirteen, revealing hyperbole, personification, symbolism, and metaphor. The findings showcased the author's skillful use of language, it can be seen through the analysis in a findings and discussion session. With hyperbole emphasizing characters' emotions, personification highlighting destiny and unity, symbolism conveying deeper meanings, and metaphor foreshadowing future events. These analysis underscored the richness of figurative language in enhancing storytelling. The study invites readers to delve into the world of figurative language, appreciating its impact on narrative depth and reader engagement

Abstract

: Purpose of this study is to find the figurative language in Beowulf poem translated by Burton Raffel. The researcher read and studied Beowulf poem which were the subject of study. The poem itself composed in Old English consisting of 3,182 lines. Beowulf is an epic poem that consist seven six-line stanzas. The researcher use descriptive-qualitative method to collect the data. The language itself spoken in Anglo-Saxon England. Beowulf poem doesn’t rhyme not the same as most modern poem this day that have rhyme. But, to create unity and flow of language, poets like Beowulf instead used figurative language in their poetry. According to Perrine (in Arp, 2010: 73), figurative language refers to language that is not literary true but that is used to create truthful meaning and understanding. Kinds of figurative language that researcher found in this poem include, assonance, alliteration, kennings, similes, metaphors, imagery, caesura. stock and allusion. from the results of the study, it shows that the readers will be interested in knowing more about poetry and

Abstract

In patriarchal societies, traditional stereotypes often restrict women's roles, portraying them as weak, emotional, and dependent on men. These stereotypes affect daily life and media representations, including film. This study analyzes how feminist values related to gender discrimination are represented in the action film Gunpowder Milkshake. The film was selected for its unique perspective on gender dynamics in a male-dominated genre. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the research focuses on five forms of gender discrimination: marginalization, subordination, stereotyping, violence, and burden. The analysis shows that Gunpowder Milkshake features strong and independent female characters who challenge traditional stereotypes and fight against oppression. The film portrays the struggles of women to gain recognition in a male-dominated world (marginalization), the control and imposed roles they face (subordination), and how they defy gender stereotypes. It also uses violence to highlight power dynamics and explores the emotional burdens faced by the protagonist, Sam. In conclusion, the findings of this research as identified and analyzed various gender themes present in the film Gunpowder Milkshake, particularly those related to marginalization, subordination, stereotyping, violence, and the burdens faced by female characters.

Abstract

Abstract: Puss In Boots: The Last Wish is an animated film produced by DreamWorks Animation which is included in the English language film but throughout the film there are many Spanish words. What makes this interesting is the way the producer combines English and Spanish into one unit that gives a strong element of Spanish culture to this film. This film is shown in various countries in the world, this is a challenge for film translators in translating every cultural word in the film. Translation Quality Assessment in the aspect of acceptability is used to determine the quality of translation in this movie, considering that not all viewers understand Spanish culture or language. The results of the acceptability of this movie show quite good results with an average acceptability of translation of 83,3%. However, many cultural words in this movie appear but are not translated, which is an important note for translators because it ignores small details that can reduce the watching experience.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to identify the types of deixis and the most dominant deixis in the SALT movie script directed by Philip Noyce. The study was conducted using a qualitative research method, focusing on the dominant deixis and its types in the script. The data collection process involved the following steps: first, the researcher watched the movie with English subtitles online; second, the movie script was obtained from the internet; then, the researcher categorized the various deixis in the script; and finally, the types of deixis were analyzed. The findings revealed several types of deixis in the script, including temporal, social, discourse, and spatial deixis, which encompass person and place deixis. Specifically, person deixis was the most prevalent, with 649 instances, accounting for 76 percent of the total. Within person deixis, first person deixis had 48 instances (7 percent), second person deixis had 279 instances (42 percent), and spatial deixis or place deixis had 66 instances (7 percent). Temporal deixis or time deixis had 29 instances (3 percent), social deixis had 24 instances (2 percent), and discourse deixis had 85 instances (10 percent). In total, 835 instances of deixis were identified in the script.

Abstract

The writer focuses on the personality development that often focuses on how an individual adapts or changes their actions and behavior based on various factors as human. The development is often represented through literature, which reflects real life conditions. This study aims to investigate the personality development and its relation to moral values represented by the main character in The Devil Wears Prada (2006). The writer uses content analysis method with qualitative approach to further analyze and interpret the data that are in the form of film scenes and dialogues. Moreover, the theory of personality development by Elizabeth Hurlock is used to guide the analysis in this research. The findings show that Andrea Sachs’ personality development is influenced by the working environment. The internal factors of Andrea’s personality are temperament, emotion, and self. Meanwhile, the external factors are physical, social, and aspiration determinants. The role of moral values in Andrea’s personality development is also discovered as the essential aspect that influences Andrea’s initial personality of being resistance to fashion, skeptical towards the work ethic in fashion industry, and indifferent to fashion industry. The external factors are the most important in the development that finally she is becoming aware of fashion sense. She values fashion positively, and works hard in Runway due to the external factors. The implication of research is to expand knowledge about transformation from Estella into Cruella based on the changes of appearance, character and the effects of the transformation due to the external factors.
