Journal of English Language and Literature (JELL) is a journal published by STIBA-IEC Jakarta. This journal is published two times a year (March and September). The main purpose of this journal is to advance and foster English Language Teaching or education, research, and Literature. The journal provides research to increase awareness, consideration and analysis of issues in Teaching English as Foreign Language or in Literature, and also promotes the interchange of ideas, and comparative studies in this field. The Journal calls for unpublished original manuscripts to be considered for publication. The papers submitted to the Journal should not have already been published elsewhere except circulated as conference presentations, nor should they be submitted simultaneously to another journal. JELL publishes the article twice a year, March and September.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the personality structure of Jasmine's behavior in Below Her Mouth movie. With this research, it is hoped that the adolescent generation, in particular, can be wiser and more selective in choosing associations and can limit things that can affect their lives in the future, especially from the environment and friendships. This research uses qualitative methods. The object used in this study is a film with a lesbian theme, namely the film Below Her Mouth. The data collected is obtained from the results of watching the film and sorting out the scenes and dialogues in the film. The results showed that Jasmine's behavior in the film Below Her Mouth is influenced by the personality structure dominated by the id structure, Jasmine's cause of eventually becoming a lesbian is influenced by internal and external factors where masculinity and seduction are part of external factors then sexual attraction and youth experiences are part of internal factors

Abstract

This research discusses the meaning and significance or semiotic theory of Balinese culture, focusing on a dance called the Kecak Dance. Researchers used descriptive qualitative methods using a semiotic theory approach from Osgood, C. E. Focus on meaning. Mouton. The sources for this research are several journals, videos and local residents. The collection technique in this research is the reading and note taking technique. The results of this research show that (1) There is a spiritual meaning in every Kecak dance movement. (2) There is a meaning that can be called a communication to Sang Hyang or God Almighty. (3) There is a meaning regarding the form of balance like diversity.

Abstract

This study aims to know the social rejections and its triggers experienced by Mumble in the movie Happy Feet. The writer uses a qualitative method to conduct the data and theory. The result shows Mumble is ostracized and ridiculed by his peers because he cannot sing like the other penguins. The rejection from the community, which values conformity, leads to feelings of isolation and sadness for Mumble. Despite the sadness Mumble experiences, the film ultimately carries a positive message of self-acceptance, resilience, and the celebration of individuality. Mumble's journey is one of overcoming adversity and embracing his unique talents, turning what initially caused sadness into a source of strength and inspiration.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to understand deeper about how psychology affects directly to parenting styles especially in a mother figure, thus eventually affect children's behaviors in their social stand towards themselves and people around them, as well as the kind of manners and actions they take when they are faced with problems. The researcher used qualitative method to collect data based on the research problem. Journals, websites, previous researches and other articles were used as data sources to analyze this film. In conclusion, Diane teaches us that loving means trusting and supporting each other with care, giving without expecting something in return, and that loving to family is always on greatest importance. She states how she always believes in Chloe’s capabilities regardless how fragile Chloe seems to be with her countless diseases. She proves how care she does and how supportive she is to her daughter. But in the end of the day, all those sacrifices and considerably amount of love and care she gives to Chloe, her impulsive lies ruin everything she built for 17 years and gone in an instant. Ultimately, giving the loved ones freedom for their life choice and keeping honesty lives in between are the best thing someone could do to support them. The purpose of this study is to focus on the parenting styles of single mothers towards her daughter with disabilities. The researcher applies the theory from Diana Baumrind (1971) about parenting styles.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to analyze Elle's personality in the film “GRANDMA” as reflected in the film, focusing on the writer's detailed explanation using a psychological approach. The researcher collects data using a descriptive qualitative method based on the research problems. The researcher uses a psychological approach to analyze this film.To analyze this film the writer uses qualitative method. The data gathered is based on the results of seeing the film and categorizing the scenes and dialogue. The results showed that Elle's behavior in the film Grandma is influenced by the personality structure by the id structure. It is influenced by internal and external factors

Abstract

The objectives of this research are: (1.)To find out what is narcissistic personality disorder in the movie no good deed. (2.) To find out how Terry struggle against to save her life from Psychopathic Prisoners that has Narcissistic Personality Disorder. (3.) to analyse the causes and effect of the crimes committed by Colin who has Narcissistic Personality Disorder. This research was conducted using a qualitative method because the writer focuses on psychological understanding of the characters and social phenomena that occur in the film. This aims to gain a deep understanding, and develop the theories contained in the film. To achieve this objective, the writer uses two approaches, namely Psychological Approach and Sociological Approach..

Abstract

This study is attempt to analyze the toxic relationship that the main character, Tessa Young, experienced in the ‘After’ Movie, which was released in 2019. It is about the main character who experienced multiple effects of toxic relationship. The aims of this study are to analyze and explain what the characteristics and negative effects of toxic relationship experienced by Tessa Young. This study uses qualitative method that includes content analysis and psychological approach. The data in this study was gathered from both primary and secondary sources. The primary data is the script of the movie and the secondari data are textbooks, articles, and journals. The findings of this study are that toxic relationship are dangerous and should be avoided by a couple. It brings negative impacts for couples that can change someone’s habit for doing bad things. The characteristics and negative effects of toxic relationships can help female friends out there to fight against toxic relationships.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the effectiveness of the Snakes and Ladders game with the Genially application in students' passive voice mastery. This research used true experimental research design was employed, involving 70 eleventh-grade students from MAN 1 Jepara which divided in two classes, experimental and control classes. Pre-tests and post-tests were conducted to measure students' understanding and mastery of passive voice before and after treatment.The experimental group showed a significant improvement in their mastery of passive voice, with an average post-test score of 79.29, compared to the control group's average of 59.43. Statistical analysis using the independent sample t-test revealed a significant difference between the two groups (0,000< 0.05), indicating that the implementation of the Snakes and Ladders game with Genially was effective in improving students' learning outcomes.The research concludes that combining traditional games with modern educational technology, such as the Genially application, can effectively improve students' understanding in passive voice.

Abstract

In daily lives, a person can adapt speech patterns, vocabulary, and accents to fit with social surroundings. From the formal language used in workplace to the informal language spoken with friends and relatives. The informal spoken form of language, particularly viewed as being of lower social rank than standard language is called vernacular. Vernacular represents the everyday language spoken by people, including slangs and taboo words that develop over time. The purpose of this research is to find the types and functions of taboo words in Hot Fuzz movie. The researcher used a qualitative descriptive method. The researcher used two theories of taboo words from Edwin Battistella (2005) to analyze the types and Timothy Jay to analyze the functions (1992). The data in the research was taken from the dialogues of the Hot Fuzz movie. The total data of taboo words found in the movie are 65 data. The researcher found all four categories of types of taboo words, they are 8 Epithets, 16 Profanity, 14 Vulgarity, and 27 Obscenity. The researcher found all five categories of functions of taboo words, they are 20 Anger and/or Frustration, 17 Descriptive – Evaluative, 10 Joking, 9 Surprise, and 9 Sarcastic Irony or Insults.

Abstract

This study is about the analysis of Katniss Everdeen’s Act of Rebellion in the Hunger Games Movie. This study aims to answer three research questions about Katniss Everdeen’s rebellious actions. The first is what are the causes of Katniss's rebellious actions? The second is what are the effects of Katniss's rebellious actions? The third is what are the types of Katniss's rebellion? In this study, the writer uses qualitative research. The writer uses the theory of Marxism by Karl Marx in Tsoulfidis (2010) and the theory of Rebellion by Kautilya (1986). The finding shows 3 (three) causes of Katniss’ Rebellion. They are resource imbalance, provocation, and social inequalities as key factors. Regarding the effects of Katniss‘ rebellion, the finding shows 2 (two) effects. They are negative and positive impacts. Regarding the types of Katniss‘ rebellion, the writer found 5 (five) types of Katniss‘ Rebellion. They are Non-violent rebellion, Violent rebellion, social rebellion, Political rebellion, and Ideological rebellion.
