Abstract

The focus of this study is to figure out whether implementing English songs as learning resources and media in educational activities may enhance students' listening skills. The researchers used a quantitative approach and pre-experimental study on 39 pupils in class VIII-B at MTs Darul Falah Bongas to gather this data. The researchers employed a single group pre-test and post-test design, which is a form of pre-experimental study. Ten multiple-choice questions based on song lyrics with a gap-filling task design were employed. The findings demonstrated that using English songs as media significantly improved students' listening skills. By comparing the pre-test and post-test results, this conclusion was reached. The mean score before the test was 41.38, and the mean score after the test was 65.69. Additionally, the hypothesis result displays a value of 5.81, which is bigger than the t-table (i.e., 2.03<5.81>2.72). The authors draw the conclusion that, in addition to being interested and motivated in the learning process, their listening abilities increased after being taught using English songs as medium. Their listening skills can then be greatly enhanced by selecting the appropriate English music.

Abstract

This study employs Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs to analyze the characteristics of Lady Christian Nimmo in Kate Foster's The Maiden to identify the levels in Maslow's pyramid that the main character most and least fulfills, as well as how those fulfillments influence the main character's round characteristics. The qualitative descriptive approach was used to collect the data for this study, and the results were obtained by applying close reading. According to this study, the female main character's character development is also impacted by the connections between the five levels of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. This study shows that even when the need for security is met, it does not ensure that the subsequent needs—love and belonging—are also met. Lady Christian's experience, in which she receives security but not love and belonging, impacts her self-esteem and ultimately prevents her from reaching self-actualization. It will afterward emphasize certain characteristics of the character development that the story's female lead has gone through, namely noble, intimate, free-spirited, brave, confident, and vulnerable.

Abstract

In the modern era, social status is often judged based on material possessions, yet this perspective does not always reflect an individual’s true economic condition. Santiago, the protagonist in The Old Man and The Sea, is traditionally perceived as a poor fisherman. However, a deconstructive analysis challenges this notion by revealing contradictions in his social identity. This study aims to analyze Santiago’s class position using Jacques Derrida’s deconstruction approach combined with Karl Marx’s theory of social class. The research employs a qualitative method with textual analysis to examine Santiago’s ambiguous status. The findings indicate that although Santiago appears impoverished, his ownership of fishing tools and freedom over his labor resembles traits of the bourgeoisie rather than the proletariat. Additionally, his resilience and self-perception reflect a level of arrogance, contradicting his supposed humility. The study concludes that Santiago’s character embodies both proletarian and bourgeois elements, demonstrating how class identity is not fixed but fluid and open to multiple interpretations. This analysis highlights the complexity of literary characters and challenges conventional class distinctions through a deconstructive lens.
