In Indonesian higher education institutions, English has been taught for the past few decades to fulfill the specific academic and professional needs of students. The present study investigates medical students’ needs for English when studying for their medical degrees which indirectly benefits their professional environments. Through survey-based research, this study examined the communication requirements of students at the Faculty of Medicine at both the academic and professional levels. The data collected through an adapted questionnaire were gathered, examined, and statistically interpreted. Three hundred medical, midwifery, and pharmacy students responded. Their answers highlight the importance of English for students' ability to participate in and understand medical discourse and communicate formally in academic settings. Accordingly, the findings of the study should contribute to improving the course objectives and syllabus, so as a result, the study will definitely benefit the learners for whom it is designed.

The goal of this study is to examine which word order is dominant in colloquial Buginese-Indonesian, 1) to find out which word-order pattern is more acceptable between SVO and VSO, 2) to find out which word-order pattern is more acceptable between VO and OV, and 3) to find out what internal linguistic characteristics and social factors motivate such acceptability. The data were collected through an online survey via Monkey Survey that employed Acceptability Judgment Task (AJT) to determine which word order is more acceptable in Buginese Indonesian (SVO or VSO and VO or OV). A total of 50 Buginese-Indonesian bilinguals rated the acceptability of 48 target items (and 48 fillers) for patterns such as SVO/VSO and VO/OV in a 1-5 Likert Scale (1=completely unnatural; 5=compeletely natural). Target items were controlled for linguistic factors and social factors. ANOVA analysis was used to analyze the data. The results indicate that both SVO and VSO are equally acceptable though VSO was slightly more favorable than SVO. When the subject is omitted, VO was farther favorable than OV. L1, age, and residence had a significant effect on the acceptability of VSO while grammatical person, education level, and residence contributed greatly to the acceptability of VO. The results also reveal that the acceptability of different word orders in Buginese-Indonesian is both linguistically and socially constrained. Thus, the results are situated within a discussion of Backus' (2014) notion of entrenchment and conventionalization.

Recount text is included within the curriculum of English subjects in the Indonesian context, where students are expected to be well-informed and be able to compose a good recount text to express themselves. The current study aimed at analyzing the recount text written by an advanced (C1 level of English) student based on the concept of Systemic Functional Linguistics. Through a qualitative case study, the data on the text organization, language features, Theme system, and Theme progression of the text were obtained through systematic identification, calculation, and analysis. The findings show that the text fulfilled the text organization and language features of a recount text. Moreover, the types of Themes with the most occurrence were unmarked topical Themes (51,2%), followed by topical textual Themes (40%), marked topical Themes (8%), and interpersonal Themes (0,8%). Based on the Theme system, Theme reiteration occurred most frequently (88.20%), while the Zigzag Themes only represented 11,80% of the total. The dominant use of unmarked Themes demonstrates the writer’s skill in keeping the focus of the readers on the central topic of the text, while the huge number of textual Themes is the implication of the student to maintain the text’s cohesion and coherence.

The purpose of this qualitative study was to comprehensively investigate the experiences in writing undergraduate theses, the challenges faced, and strategies to alleviate the encountered challenges, of ten EFL student teachers at one higher education institution in Jambi. To collect the data, we employed semi-structured interviews guided by an interview protocol to elicit the participantsâ€™ responses. The results of the study, through thematic analysis (Braun & Clark, 2006), indicated that there are four major themes of challenges in writing an undergraduate thesis, including linguistics and writing knowledge issues, psychological issues, media and resources issues, and supervision and time management issues. To cope with those challenges, the participants employed some strategies, such as self-management strategy, technological help, and help from others. This study suggests EFL student teachers identify issues they struggle with in writing their theses. It is necessary so they could find a helpful way to deal with the challenge.

This study presents a meta-synthesis analysis of the challenges faced by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners in composing academic writing (AW). A comprehensive literature review was conducted to identify relevant studies on EFL learners' difficulties in AW, leading to the inclusion of 25 articles in the final analysis. The selected articles were systematically analyzed and synthesized to identify common themes and patterns related to the difficulties EFL learners face in AW. The findings revealed five major categories of challenges: including linguistic difficulties, organizational and coherence problems, cultural and sociocultural factors, feedback and revision, and motivation and self-efficacy. Based on the meta-synthesis, recommendations for teaching and learning practices are provided, as well as directions for future research in the area of EFL composition. By understanding the challenges faced by EFL learners in composition, educators can develop targeted interventions and support strategies to facilitate their students' progress and success in composing texts.

In recent years, online mass media has made a significant contribution to explaining events and how these events are interpreted and understood by the public. One of them is the incident regarding the case of public officials with a lifestyle of hedonism (those familiar with corrupt behavior). The purpose of this study is to examine the image of officials built by the Tirto.id mass media in an editorial on "hedonic officials.â€ The analysis in this study uses qualitative methods. Data analysis was carried out descriptively. This type of research is content analysis with the data source in the form of news text produced and published by the mass media Tirto.id on March 15, 2023. The discourse is entitled "Hedonic Officials: The Seed of Corruption That Butchers the Prosperity of the People.â€ Data collection techniques were carried out by reading discourses and noting excerpts of sentences related to research problems. The research procedure was carried out using three stages (methods) suggested by Norman Fairclough: description, interpretation, and explanation. The validity of the data was carried out by testing referential validity and intra-rater reliability (observing and reading data carefully and persistently). The results of the analysis show that the Tirto.id mass media gives a negative image to several public officials, especially the Directorate General of Taxes (DGT). This negative image can be seen from the use of words that have a negative connotation and contain controversy. Public officials are described as figures who have a hedonistic attitude that is often close to corrupt behavior, entities that are rotten, dirty, disgusting, dilapidated, damaging, and/or butcher people's prosperity

The transformation of face-to-face classrooms into online classes during the Pandemic Covid 19 has impacted ELT activities. One of which is the students' satisfaction with the new format of learning. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between English Foreign Learning (EFL) Pre-service Teachersâ€™ satisfaction with online English learning and their academic performance. A quantitative study with a correlational design was adopted to investigate the issue. A convenience sample strategy was used to recruit 132 EFL pre-service teachers from a private university in Yogyakarta. An online survey was administered to garner the data as well as studentsâ€™ GPAs were used as another criteria. The Kendall's Tau correlation value (-value) of this study was 0.023, with a significance value of 0.704 (0.704>0.05). It suggests that the alternative hypothesis has been ruled out. Consequently, the research revealed that there was a statistically insignificant correlation between the level of satisfaction of EFL Pre-service Teachers' experience with online English learning and their academic performance. Even so, teachers and institutions are expected to still maintain the quality of online learning for their students.

This research focuses on the use of parental support messages for children and what these messages mean. Messages of support are a form of positive communication to encourage children to become better individuals. This research used the qualitative method. In answering the formulation problem, speech act theory was used by Yule (2006) which was elaborated by Duncan (2009) regarding messages of support, and Wolfson & Judd (1983) about the meaning behind these support messages. The data in this study are expressive utterances that contain praise, approval, and encouragement originating from films about parenting. The data were collected using listening and note-taking techniques and then analyzed using Spradley (2016). From the research that has been done, it is concluded that each message of support conveyed has its own aims and objectives. The delivery of messages of support is influenced by the background of speakers and speech partners. Those indicate that parenting support messages play a role in parent-child communication. Its main role is to strengthen solidarity and maintain harmony between speakers. So, the language aspect must be considered by parents. This research used term â€œParentinguisticâ€ or abbreviation of Parenting Linguistic, to invite further research on the relationship between parenting and language.

This study sought to pinpoint key requirements for incorporating technology into education. A survey of junior high schools was used in the study which took a qualitative approach. A research sample of 35 students who were chosen purposively for the study were given the questionnaire as a data gathering tool with three components; the utility/feature of usage, the interest, and the pedagogical content of the Evoce robot. The data was analyzed by using the Guttman scale has a CS of at least 0.60 and a CR of at least 0.90, it was considered to meet the unidimental and cumulative features. The findings showed the mean of CR from three indicators was 0.908, which means the result of CR was valid while the mean score was CS was 0.798, which means that the coefficients of scalability were considered good. Based on the result findings students' opinions about the usage of the Evoce robot as technology in the learning process were inversely correlated with their usage of learning media was helping them in attaining new media of teaching was the Evoce robot. It recommended that robots might give an alternative interesting media in class, especially for teaching vocabulary.

The inculcation of moral values in English textbooks, particularly in primary schools, has been a global concern in recent decades due to Englishâ€™s growing importance as a global lingua franca and the impact it carries. Hence, the present study aimed to: (1) elucidate the realisation of moral values discursively represented in three primary school English textbooks entitled English Chest 1, 2 and 3, and (2) determine the extent of the textbooksâ€™ contents in teaching the moral values. Faircloughâ€™s (1995, 2013) framework of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) integrated with Kress & Van Leeuwenâ€™s (2006) Visual Grammar Theory (VGT) was applied to elucidate the depiction of moral values in the textbooks. Additionally, Isaacsâ€™ (2001) framework of Developmental Moral Values and Smetanaâ€™s (2006) Social Domain Theory were also adopted to look at how the contents of the textbooks teach moral values. The results show that (1) modesty (8,99%), curiosity (8,44%), perseverance (7,08%), and friendship (6,53%) are the most frequently occurring values in the three EFL textbooks. (2) The discursive realisation has revealed that certain fundamental moral values such as audacity, sociability, industriousness, respect for others, and responsibility are taught through the depictions of verbal-visual images in both school and familial contexts. Importantly, the three EFL textbooks have fairly adhered to the Indonesian moral (character) education goals and stipulation. They also provide implications on both primary school students and English teachersâ€™ pedagogical, linguistic, and moral development so as to raise EFL textbook designersâ€™ awareness to develop more morally-laden content.
