Abstract

Nowadays’ multicultural education poses various challenges. One of the latent issues currently emerged in Indonesia education is the mistreatment towards the students of minority ethnic amongst the fellow learners. This status quo pushes schools’ stakeholders to reflect upon their responsibilities and reconsider the use of multiculturalism in enhancing diversity awareness towards both teachers and students. In an attempt to promote multicultural education, the use of multicultural literature that portrays various cultures, values, and views, may assist the students in appreciating their own culture by the acquisition of diverse perspectives of the society. Moreover, it provides potential teachers to comprehend the diversity of multicultural issues beyond mono-cultural perspectives. This paper aims to emphasize the significance of multicultural literature as teaching materials; recommend selection and evaluation criteria for the said literature; as well as to present strategies of formulating literature-based classrooms. In providing the best teaching materials, it is necessary to select high-quality multicultural literature to present accurate and authentic representations of cultural communities. At any rate, 10 overall criteria should be embedded within the selected literature, thus the QUILT metric can be utilized to assess its quality. Afterward, there are also several recommended approaches, techniques, or strategies for formulating a literature-based classroom that may promote critical thinking in literary discussion.

Abstract

This research aims to: 1) identifying type and function of code switching and code mixing in Yowis Ben (2018) and Yowis Ben 2 (2019) film structure, and 2) determining translation quality of code switching and code mixing Javanese-Indonesian into English subtitles for Yowis Ben (2018) and Yowis Ben 2 (2019) films. Primary data in this study consists of two; linguistic data and translation data. Linguistic data was obtained through content analysis and translation data was obtained through FGD (Forum Group Discussion). The results show that there are two kinds of code switching and three kinds of code mixing found in the films. Furthermore, there are 14 functions of code switching and code mixing used in the films. In translating code switching and code mixing, the translator used several techniques, including neutralization, modulation, paraphrasing, transposition, implicitation, explicitation, compensation, and description. From the results, the researcher found that most of the data are translated less accurate. However, the acceptability and readability aspects are in high level.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to develop a scale to measure Self-Efficiency levels of the English Teachers for the Education of gifted students. This research in survey method was carried out with 352 volunteer English Language Teachers (291 women, 61 men) who worked in the 2020-2021 academic year in the Educational Institutions related to the Ministry of National Education in Turkey. To find out validity and reliability of the scale the data set was randomly divided into two. As the result of EFA analysis on the first data set a two-dimensional scale was obtained. The structure obtained was confirmed in the second data set. As a result of discriminant validity test and convergent validity test on both data sets, the scale was found acceptable. After the validity processes, reliability processes were also applied for both separate data sets. For the whole scale, the Cronbach's alpha data coefficient was found as 0.88 in the first data set and it was found 0.87 in the second data set. Results of the analysis revealed that, the Self-Efficiency of the English Teachers for the Education of Gifted Students Scale provides valid and reliable results

Abstract

Digital era necessitates not only knowledge of content and teaching methods but also integration of technology in language instruction. Covid-19 pandemic has constituted one of the critical reasons that accelerated the inclusion of digital tools into the teaching practice.  Using the technological pedagogical and content knowledge framework, the present study dwelled upon the EFL instructors’ perceived TPACK levels and the probable changes that they experienced in their technological skills and knowledge after pandemic. The EFL instructors working at both state and private universities formed the participants of the study. Based on the mixed research method, the study gathered the data were both quantitatively and qualitatively. The quantitative data were collected through TPACK-Deep Scale and, open-ended question form was administrated for the qualitative data. The results indicated that EFL instructors had higher perceptions of TPACK, and they had differing levels for each factor level depending on gender, workplace, years of experience and educational status. They also mainly experienced positive changes after pandemic and had favorable attitudes towards technology use in language teaching. Finally, the study suggested pedagogical implications to benefit from technology for instructional purposes.

Abstract

The present study is a corpus-based grammatical investigation for the computational identification of metaphors. The aim of the study is to set a grammatical criterion for the computational identification of metaphors in the Holy Qur’ān and propose a computer software input rule for the grammatical identification of metaphorical candidates. The work presented in this study draws on the cognitive theory of metaphor (Lakoff and Johnson, 1980), authentic exegeses of the Holy Qur’ān, and finally and most significantly it draws on and extends techniques from computational linguistics. The corpus of the study is one surah from the Holy Qur’ān, Sūrat Hūd. A methodology for the investigation of candidate metaphor grammatical structure was developed to deduce the grammatical markers of metaphor and utilize them in the computational identification of metaphors. A quantitative and qualitative interpretation of these results and how they can contribute to the computer software suggested for a computer identification of metaphor in the Holy Qur’ān is made. The study ended with a theoretical framework that was applied to the corpus to find metaphors by findings specific grammatical markers.

Abstract

This present study aims to examine the procedure of adaptation in four selected US-based image memes adapted to the Indonesian context. Four US-based image memes and their Indonesian adaptation were selected as the source of data. They were purposively chosen from some Indonesian memes’ websites and the US-based image memes. This study adopts Bastin’s theory of adaptation as the theoretical framework to analyze the adaptation procedure used by the Indonesian content creators in adapting the US-based image memes. The analysis of this descriptive qualitative study reveals that from the seven modes of Bastin’s adaption, the Indonesian content creators used the sixth procedure, situational or cultural adequacy for the adaptation of the US-based image memes to the Indonesian context.   This study concludes that the four selected US-based image memes under the present study have been localized by using Bahasa Indonesia to accommodate the cultural transfer that suits the Indonesian cultural settings. Secondly, Bahasa Indonesia used in the memes assigns a new cultural meaning that is socially understood by Indonesian memetic society. Lastly, this study is hoped to shed a light on the pedagogical field,  proposing that cultural awareness is significant in translation to bridge the cultural transfer from the source text to the new target readers.

Abstract

With the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, nearly all theoretical and practical classes and methods of assessment had to be delivered on digital platforms. This paper reports the use of task-based assessment of the communicative competence of first-year pre-service English language teachers. The aim was to explore the role of the platform where the tasks were held on the students’ self-assessment of their spoken performances. The participants (n=50) evaluated their linguistic, discourse, strategic and sociolinguistics competence on two public speaking tasks. The face-to-face speaking task required elaborating on two famous quotes, whereas the online speaking task had to do with the semiotic analysis of a TV commercial which was decided upon by the teacher candidate. Student evaluations of their communicative competence ranged on a scale from one to five, where one meant very poor and five meant very good. The results indicated that the only component of communicative competence that was viewed to be good was discourse competence in the face-to-face task; however, all the elements of communicative competence were considered to be good except for the sociolinguistic competence in the face-to-screen task. The main findings were (i) that the students had a more positive evaluation of their communicative competence when making online presentations and (ii) that they mostly attributed the differences in their self-evaluations either to the platform or to a combination of the platform and the nature of the task. Yet, face-to-face interaction seems to act as a requirement to improve the sociolinguistic competence of foreign language teacher candidates.

Abstract

This qualitative study aims to investigate speech acts in announcements posted at supermarkets and hypermarkets in Bangkok, Thailand during the COVID-19 outbreak, under the framework of the speech acts theory. The communicative functions and hidden intentions in the language used are also examined. At the data collection stage, the definitions of ‘supermarket’ and ‘hypermarket’ were applied to determine the sources. Then, announcements posted at the entrances to branches of supermarkets and hypermarkets in Bangkok were collected during the period of April 1 - 30, 2020, by taking photographs. The criterion for collecting the announcements was that they had to be information relating to activities stores dealing with the pandemic. The total number of announcements found was 239. After the elimination of those with identical content, 32 announcements were used for the analysis. The findings show four types of speech acts: representatives, directives, expressives, and commissives. Such acts perform the communicative functions of informing customers about sanitary measures, requesting cooperation in following government regulations, expressing feelings toward customers, and showing the determination to operate the business in an ethical manner. The indirect speech acts help reveal the intentions of the stores to create a positive image. The study also reveals characteristics of Thai society in terms of hierarchy and solidarity. The study has implications for knowledge of language use during crises and provides insight into the power of language to communicate things over and above literal meanings.

Abstract

Google Docs has recently been suggested as an efficient collaborative tool for group writing. This experimental quantitative study, including pretest-treatment-posttest design, aimed at comparing the effects of collaborative writing on Google Docs and individual writing practice on EFL learners’ descriptive paragraphs. The participants were 48 Turkish EFL learners at pre-intermediate level of proficiency, based on their performance on Oxford Placement Test. The participants were assigned to two groups. One group, including 24 participants, experienced collaborative writing on Google Docs plus researchers’ comments as feedback (CWGD group). The other group, including 24 participants, experienced individual writing practice plus researcher’s direct corrective feedback (IWP group). The results of the independent samples t-test indicated that the CWGD group significantly outperformed the IWP group. In conclusion, collaborative writing Google Docs environment can enhance the writing skill of the EFL learners. Therefore, the study highly recommends utilizing collaborative writing on Google Docs to practice English language writing skill.

Abstract

The enhancement of English writing skills is essential for academic success, and as one form of alternative assessment, peer feedback implementations are utilized to enrich writing instruction process. The advent of Web 2.0 tools has helped writing practitioners utilize various Cloud-based technologies including Google Docs to encourage learners collaborate and exchange comments on their written products. Responding to the frequent calls to conduct further investigations utilizing diverse e-platforms to find out the most effective ones, thereby helping informed practitioner decisions, the current study examined the opinions of preparatory students enrolled in an English Language and Literature Department towards peer collaboration through Google Docs. Overall, computer-supported collaborative writing process created a sense of community and was found welcoming both for feedback provider and receivers who had diverse gains. Yet, the implementation is not without its limitations with personal and technical dimensions. The findings suggest that for a rewarding online peer editing experience, practitioners need to justify their attempts to extend writing instruction and assessment outside school borders, negotiate the e-platform with learners, and train them about how to comment on written products objectively
