Abstract

Optimism is a critical aspect influencing midwive candidate in their educational phase because it could affect midwifery students in overcoming any obstacles during their study. One of the factors associated with optimism is culture. This study was conducted to examine the differences of optimism given various ethnicities on midwifery students. The study sample was the 476 vocational students majoring in midwifery that were located in the provinces of DKI Jakarta, West Java, Banten, and West Sumatra (women only, age ranged 19-20 years). The LOT-R questionnaire was used to collect data on optimism. The results of One-Way ANOVA test showed that there was no significant difference on optimism in view of ethnicity (F=1.040; p>.05). The future studies should involve more participants from various ethnicities in Indonesia, especially ethnicities in the eastern region of Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the relationship between loneliness and narcissistic tendencies on social network Instagram users. The population in this study is the users of social network Instagram for at least 6 months, aged 18-24 years, has a minimum of 90 photos on their instagram account, actively access instagram account  for once until twice a day. Snowball sampling is used in this study, with the participation of 65 participants. Measurement instrument used in this study were UCLA Loneliness Scale Version 3 and the Narcissistic Personality Inventory 40 Items. Pearson's Product Moment is used to test the correlation between loneliness and narcissistic tendency. The results of this study showed that there was no relationship between loneliness and narcissistic tendency among social network Instagram users (r = -0.080, p=.264).

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the correlation of attachment and self-esteem to social adjustment on victims of bullying. Bullying victims encounter adverse effects that can prolong until adulthood. They also experience poor social adjustment. Good social adjustment associated with self-esteem. A warm and rewarding parenting practices facilitate high self-esteem. Emotional closeness creates strong bonds. Therefore attachment influences the formation of a sense of security for the survival of the child’s life in the future. The study population is students who were also bullying victims. The participants were 50 students that were identified using purposive sampling technique. The Social Adjustment Scale, the Attachment Scale, and the Self-Esteem Scale were used to collect data. The results of multiple regression analysis indicated that attachment and self-esteem predict social adjustment on victims of bullying  (F(2,47) = 5,576; p = 0,007; R2= 0,192). Partially, attachment predicts social adjustment on victims of bullying (F(1,48) = 5,201; p = 0,027; R2= 0,098) and self-esteem predicts social adjustment on victims of bullying (F(1,48) = 10,713; p = 0,002; R2= 0,182).

Abstract

This qualitative study aims to explore how mothers fulfill the need for attachment on their children in the context of Bengkulu culture. The study participants comprised five mothers that were identified using purposive sampling method. The following characteristics were applied: 1) the third generation of a family that lived in Bengkulu, 2) the nuclear family lives together, 3) she has a child with a minimum of 2 years of age, and 4) she uses local language to communicate within the family. The data analysis resulted in the following 10 themes or categories: 1) The use of local language to respond to the child’s need for attachment; 2) The attached figure (mother) used an insecure attachment; 3) Mother responds spontaneously depends on the situation; 4) The tone of mother’s voice affects the child’s perception; 5) The mother’s emotion influences her chosen words; 6) The intrinsic factors that affect the fulfillment of child’s attachment were marriage readiness, the quality of marriage relationship, and verbal ability; 7) The extrinsic factors affect the fulfillment of child’s need for attachment were financial condition, the environment where the participants lived, and education level; 8) Treating a child as an object; 9) The structure of extended family reinforces child’s insecure attachment; 10) Interaction pattern and character of the society.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between loneliness and selfie-liking. The hypothesis of this research is that there is a positive relationship between loneliness and selfie-liking among college students. This research used correlational quantitative methods. Participants in this research was 64 students, which was taken by purposive sampling technique, with inclusive criteria: like to do selfie and in the last month post the selfie photos to social media as much as 4-6 times. Data were collected using the Loneliness Scale from UCLA Version 3 and selfie-liking measured by Selfie-Liking Scale.  The correlation was analyzed using the Spearman Correlation Test with SPSS 23 for Windows. The results showed there was a positive and significant relationship between loneliness and self-liking (r=.297; p=.009) which means the higher loneliness, the higher selfie-liking.

Abstract

Teenager’s activities in the online social networks, influenced by the nature of teenager’s characteristic who tends to look for a good impression from others. This study examined the effects of coping strategies and self-esteem on the teenagers’ self-disclosure on online social networking. In total, 185 adolescents participated the study; they were identified using the purposive sampling. The sample characteristics were having a social media account and an active user of social media. The Revised Self-Disclosure Scale, the Self-Esteem Scale, and the Ways of Coping Checklist were used to collect data.  The results of regression analysis showed that there is a positive and significant correlation of coping strategies and self-esteem on adolescents’ disclosure in online social networking.

Abstract

This is an action research that aims to identify and improve classroom management skill of six homeroom teachers in a low socio-economic elementary school. Classroom management skill is defined as teacher’s ability to create and maintain a learning environment that conducive to learning. The classroom management skill is measured using an observation-based rating scales and semi-structured interviews. The findings showed that classroom management skills were lacking among the majority of participants because they did not have sufficient knowledge about classroom management and did not understand their class’ needs. After two periods of intervention, the participants’ classroom management skill is improved. It was revealed that individual coaching is more effective than training method in improving classroom management skill. Furthermore, educational background and previous professional experience influenced participants’ classroom management skill. However, participants with the relevant educational background do not automatically master classroom management skill, unless supported with professional experience.

Abstract

Patients with a chronic kidney disease encounter medical as well as psychological problems. They have to adjust to the daily changes in life as consequences of the required treatment. The need to take medication regularly, hemodialysis treatment, and reduce mobility because of limitation of physical abilities may cause distress and often impact on their self-esteem. This study aimed to investigate the correlation of self-esteem to quality of life on patients with chronic kidney disease who undergo hemodialysis. The study population is patients who join “Komunitas Hidup Ginjal Muda”, a community of young people with kidney disease in the social media (Facebook) which has 371 members. The incidental sampling technique was applied and resulted in 34 patients joined the study as study participants. The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and the Kidney Disease Quality of Life Short Form (version 1.3) were used to collect data. The results of product moment correlation analysis showed that there was a positive and significant correlation between self-esteem and quality of life among chronic kidney disease patients who undergo hemodialysis (r = .417; p = .014).
