Abstract

This is an action research that aims to identify and improve classroom management skill of six homeroom teachers in a low socio-economic elementary school. Classroom management skill is defined as teacher’s ability to create and maintain a learning environment that conducive to learning. The classroom management skill is measured using an observation-based rating scales and semi-structured interviews. The findings showed that classroom management skills were lacking among the majority of participants because they did not have sufficient knowledge about classroom management and did not understand their class’ needs. After two periods of intervention, the participants’ classroom management skill is improved. It was revealed that individual coaching is more effective than training method in improving classroom management skill. Furthermore, educational background and previous professional experience influenced participants’ classroom management skill. However, participants with the relevant educational background do not automatically master classroom management skill, unless supported with professional experience.

Abstract

Mental health is often disregarded because it does not involve physical pain. However, it is just as important as physical health, and many Indonesians still need to understand it fully. To address this issue, a research study was conducted to examine how mental health content on TikTok affects Generation Z's understanding of toxic relationships. The study analyzed the TikTok account @sundarindah, which posted content about toxic relationships between January and November 2023 and used Uses and Gratification theory to analyze research findings. The study used an explanatory survey with a quantitative approach and a positivistic paradigm. The findings indicate that there is a positive correlation between mental health content and knowledge about toxic relationships. However, the study also found that the impact of TikTok content on mental health was moderate. The findings of this study are understandable because the mass audience can no longer be seen as passive recipients of any message conveyed through the media. Audiences now actively choose media that can fulfill their needs and desires. However, TikTok has become an attractive medium for Generation Z because of its audio-visual advantages. The information conveyed through this account is casual and has entertainment elements.

Abstract

This Community Service Activity (PKM) aims to enhance the teaching quality of Sunday school teachers at The Grace Pakuan Yogyakarta through psychoeducation focused on understanding child development. Recognizing the need for information on teaching methods that consider developmental stages, the Faculty of Psychology at UPH initiated an educational program addressing developmental stages and specific cases encountered by Sunday school teachers. The program includes a series of workshops and training sessions designed to equip teachers with knowledge of child development and effective teaching techniques. By understanding cognitive, emotional, and social developmental stages, teachers are expected to create more engaging, supportive, and effective learning environments. The psychoeducation program includes both pre-test and post-test evaluations to measure changes in teachers' knowledge about child development. Evaluations reveal significant improvements in understanding the developmental stages of Sunday school children and children with special needs. These findings suggest that the psychoeducation program can be extended to include training for new teachers to help them comprehend child development stages and develop teaching methods that are easily understood by Sunday school children. Additionally, there is a need for continuous programs aimed at creating inclusive and effective Sunday school environments within the church.

Abstract

Abstract

The Child Welfare Institution (LKSA) X is currently facing a serious issue related to social media addiction among its residents. Most of the residents, who are elementary to high school-aged children and adolescents, have begun accessing social media continuously. This behavior has affected their study time, self-confidence, and social relationships. In response, a service program in the form of a training was conducted to raise awareness of the signs of social media addiction and strategies to prevent and reduce its impact. The training methods included simulations, reflections, and group discussions, encouraging both residents and staff to find contextually appropriate ways to manage social media use. Participants were also given space to share their daily challenges and co-create solutions. The training’s effectiveness was evaluated using a pre-test and post-test Social Media Addiction Scale adapted by Agung and Sahara (2023). The analysis showed a decrease in average social media addiction scores, although not statistically significant. These results indicate a positive impact of the training, suggesting the need for a longer intervention period and further evaluation to ensure lasting outcomes.

Abstract

The lives of Afghan refugees in Indonesia as a transit country are marked by limited access to basic rights and heightened psychosocial vulnerability. Prolonged conflict in their homeland, coupled with the uncertainty of their legal status in transit, has led to psychological difficulties such as trauma, anxiety, and social alienation. This program responds to these conditions by designing a Community-Based Psychosocial Support (CBPSS) intervention targeting two primary groups: refugee children and adults. For children, the intervention consisted of play-based emotional regulation and self-expression activities, while adults underwent PHQ-9 screening and individual counseling with professional psychologists. A total of 58 participants were involved, including 28 children and 30 adults. The findings indicate that this approach enhanced children’s ability to express emotions and provided a safe space for adults to process emotional burdens. Techniques such as infinity breathing and progressive muscle relaxation were valued by participants for being simple yet effective. Community feedback reflected an overall improvement in collective psychosocial well-being, with ratings of 4/5 for program communication and 5/5 for its perceived benefits. These results suggest that CBPSS can serve as an adaptive, impactful, and sustainable model for refugee psychosocial recovery.

Abstract

Student engagement and learning motivation play a crucial role in enhancing the quality of education while preventing low academic achievement and the risk of dropout. Within the context of Generation Z, who were born in the digital era, students possess unique characteristics as visual learners with shorter attention spans, a preference for interactive learning, and a strong need for meaningful learning experiences. These conditions require teachers to adopt more relevant instructional strategies, one of which is active learning, which has been shown to enhance student motivation and engagement. This community service program was implemented at SMPTK and SMTK Presbiteri Bali, involving 11 teachers in three training sessions: (1) understanding the characteristics of Generation Z students, (2) a workshop on the application of active learning, and (3) a reflective post-implementation discussion. Descriptive analysis indicated an increase in the average scores of student engagement and motivation, rising from 208.3 to 215.9 after the program. However, the paired samples t-test revealed that the difference in scores before and after the program was not statistically significant, t(8) = -1.509, p = 0.170 (p > 0.05). Nevertheless, qualitative evaluations revealed that teachers felt supported, more confident, and motivated to enrich their instructional strategies. These findings highlight the importance of practice- and case-based teacher training conducted continuously to strengthen the implementation of active learning in addressing the educational needs of Generation Z.
