This paper aims tofind out how e-portfolio helps nurture students’ critical thinkingskills. To achieve the objective, an action research involvingplanning, acting, observing and reflecting is conducted in preintermediate English for teen class. In addition, students’ perceptionof using e-portfolio during their learning is also investigated.

Abstract

This paper draws attention to the particularities of the specially demanding positions of lecturers of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) in terms of the need for their incessant self-education in two areas of expertise. Teaching ESP is the most performativity-oriented form of English Language Teaching (ELT). The widespread presence of ESP implies its high relevance for the interested learners. Here lies an unusually demanding situation for a linguist. There are usually no ready-made ESP courses that can meet a group of students’ needs that are unique. This leaves lecturers on their own to develop appropriate teaching materials and courses. In today’s competitive world of science and business domains, the ESP lecturer needs to constantly know the developments in linguistics and developments in the field they did not receive their primary education in. These must be done to ensure learners ability to be successful on a global level.

Abstract

This paper considers three of the most commonly administered proficiency tests: the TOEFL iBT, TOEFL PBT, and the IELTS. Through a composition and analysis of research investigating each test’s structure, scoring, reliability, and validity, the use of proficiency tests as indicators of a student’s productivity and success at English-speaking universities is examined. Whereas each testing service claims to be the number one proficiency test, a comparison of the research shows proficiency tests can be used as reliable predictors of students’ scholastic aptitude and future performance is inconclusive; however the research does suggest that the TOEFL iBT is the most reliable and valid assessment for all four skills available.
