Abstract

This qualitative study was conducted to explore the lived experiences of Generation Z struggling with online pornography addiction within Indonesia’s conservative yet digitally connected environment. The study responded to the rising prevalence of internet pornography consumption among this generation. This study employed a phenomenological approach to investigate subjective meanings and behavioral patterns. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with nine participants selected via purposive and snowball sampling. Analysis was conducted using the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) framework, aided by QDA Miner Lite. Cognitive Dissonance Theory was used to understand participants lived experiences, particularly internal conflicts between their behaviors and the values they held. The analysis identified four main themes: 1) the momentum of triggering a desire to watch online pornography; 2) the contribution of online media in escalating pornography access; 3) pornography addiction as a regressive development; and 4) non-solutive compensation efforts and the cycle of pornography addiction. The research findings revealed that online pornography serves as an emotional escape and a socially embedded behavior influenced by peer dynamics and digital culture. The study recommends the development of empathy-based education and counseling programs that emphasize behavioral understanding rather than prohibitive measures.

Abstract

This study examines the development of urban identity in Indonesia's new capital, IKN Nusantara, addressing challenges in environmental sustainability, Indigenous rights, and policy implementation. The research assesses how the city’s planning reflects Indonesia’s cultural and ecological diversity through a qualitative analysis of government reports, academic studies, and news articles. Findings identify three core themes—identity, mobility, and inclusivity—as critical to fostering collective belonging. The study concludes that integrating these elements through participatory governance can establish Nusantara as a model of sustainable urbanism, recommending that the IKN Authority adopt proactive branding strategies to address equity concerns.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in development communication from the community perspective. It explores how public perception of AI-based systems such as chatbots, mobile applications, and text-to-speech platforms affects community participation and the effectiveness of development communication. Utilizing the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), the study examines the relationship between Perceived Usefulness (PU), Perceived Ease of Use (PEOU), and Information Quality (IQ) on community engagement, which in turn influences the effectiveness of communication. A quantitative method using survey data from 400 respondents in Jakarta was employed. The data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM-PLS). The findings indicate that all independent variables significantly affect community participation, with information quality being the most dominant factor. Furthermore, community participation is the strongest predictor of development communication effectiveness. The results support the importance of AI not only as an informative medium but also as a participatory tool for inclusive governance.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the lived experiences and meaning-making of FoMO among members of the PERHUMAS Muda Yogyakarta 2023 cohort, a public relations student organization that paradoxically possesses strategic communication awareness yet remains vulnerable to FoMO. Using a qualitative approach with Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) and the Self-Determination Theory (SDT) framework, data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation involving four informants. Findings reveal that FoMO is not merely a fear of missing out, but a manifestation of efforts to fulfill three basic psychological needs: (1) Autonomy, in which FoMO drives digital identity management strategies through account separation (first/second account); (2) Competence, in which FoMO acts as a double-edged catalyst, simultaneously triggering social comparison anxiety while driving productive behaviors such as participation in competitions; and (3) Relatedness, which creates a paradox of being "digitally connected but relationally empty." The novelty of this research lies in unpacking the duality of FoMO as both a pathology and a professional catalyst, as well as the discovery of impression management strategies as an autonomous response to digital pressure. Theoretical and practical implications for communication education and digital mental health are discussed.

Abstract

After a few weeks of the airing of the movie “Agak Laen”, a lot of people are discussing about the topics of misogyny in this movie on X or what used to be known as Twitter. This study aims to analyze the communication network and public sentiment towards the topic of misogyny in the film “Agak Laen” on X social media platform. Through the Social Network Analysis (SNA) method with a descriptive quantitative approach, researchers identified the communication as well as interaction patterns among social media users. Then, researchers collected the data using Tweet-Harvest with a Twitter connection using Tweet Auth and analyzed the obtained data using a python programming language built on the Google Colab platform. Afterwards, researchers processed the data using Gephi version 0.10.1 and Netlytic. The results of sentiment analysis towards 55 Tweets showed the majority of neutral sentiments, indicating that public discussions related to the topic of misogynism in the film “Agak Laen” tended to be less emotionally intense. The research also found that the X-user account @runiarumndari served as the key actor with the most interactions

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how the digital media outlet Narasi Newsroom, through its People segment, constructs the image of vulnerable groups within the context of social life. Vulnerable groups in this research include women, the elderly, indigenous communities, the poor, and communities with diverse social identities. This study employs a qualitative content analysis with a descriptive approach, using Peter L. Berger's theory of the social construction of reality as the analytical framework. The results show that Narasi Newsroom presents vulnerable groups as individuals and communities with roles, values, and sociocultural strengths worthy of recognition. Through the use of symbols, narratives, and depictions of daily activities, these groups are portrayed not merely as victims, but as active members of society with social roles. The media thus facilitates a social construction process that encourages a more positive public perception of vulnerable communities. This research recommends the importance of a journalistic approach that involves the subjects directly in the media coverage, so that vulnerable groups are given space to express their identities and life values in a complete and dignified manner.

Abstract

This study examines the lived spiritual communication experiences of nine adherents of the Budi Daya belief system in Cibedug Hamlet, Lembang, West Bandung, Indonesia. Employing Moustakas’s (1994) Transcendental Phenomenology — selected for its capacity to systematically uncover essential experiential structures through epoche, phenomenological reduction, and imaginative variation — the study investigates what spiritual communication experiences Budi Daya adherents undergo and how these shape their vertical (human-divine) and horizontal (human-human/nature) communicative relationships. Data were collected from nine purposively selected informants through in-depth interviews, participant observation during community rituals, and documentary review. Three invariant themes emerge from the cross-case analysis: (1) cognitive-reflective experience manifested as inner spiritual struggle and intrapersonal dialogue (textural description: Indra, Ecep, Euis Shelian); (2) ritual-behavioral experience expressed through the symbolic and collective dimensions of the Mipit Amit ceremony; and (3) social-communal experience realized through solidarity, togetherness, and interreligious harmony. The study’s novelty lies in its proposal of a dual-channel spiritual communication framework — bridging transcendental and cultural communication theory — grounded in the indigenous lived experience of a non-mainstream local belief community in Indonesia, advancing existing spiritual communication scholarship by demonstrating that transcendental and cultural communication are mutually constitutive in indigenous religious practice.

Abstract

The Israeli Genocide against Palestine was widely reported in online mass media. The media's construction of this event reveals violations of international humanitarian law. The audience's rage is conveyed through social media, funding campaigns, and exclamation to influence UN decisions. Continuous exposure to news and social media campaigns eventually leads the public to boycott products that are confirmed to support Israel. Based on this fact, this study intends to investigate the impact of online news exposure and social media campaigns on social attitudes. Through a survey of 400 respondents, data were analyzed using multiple linear regression. The partial test results obtained: 1) online news exposure influences social attitudes with an estimated value of 0.137; 2) Social media campaigns also influence social attitudes with an estimated value of 0.801. Both results can be interpreted as having a positive influence on variables. The results of the F test show that online news exposure and social media campaigns are considered to have a simultaneous influence on social attitudes. This study offers implications for theoretical advancement in digital activism and practical recommendations for strengthening public communication strategies in humanitarian issues.

Abstract

Existing research has examined the role of Instagram in city branding and tourism promotion, yet the formation of city identity within the symbolic economy, especially through visual meaning-making, remains underexplored. Drawing on the symbolic economy perspective, this study investigates the construction of Batam’s destination brand. The study analyzed 470 posts from the official Instagram account of the Batam City Tourism and Culture Office using a qualitative visual semiotic approach. Peirce’s semiotic framework and Cohen’s authenticity dimensions were used to interpret representations of Malay culture. The findings show that Malay cultural elements function as symbolic resources expressed through the dimensions of origins, creativity, and genuineness. The study further suggests that social media contributes to destination promotion while functioning as a space where cultural meanings are produced and local culture acquires symbolic value in city-branding practices.

Abstract

Reporting on poverty has always been a compelling topic for the mass media. Beyond its news value, such reporting reflects the media’s ideal role as an institution that exercises social control over those responsible for tackling poverty, particularly the government and the state. Kompas is one of Indonesia’s major mass media outlets, which, to this day, continues to demonstrate a commitment to highlighting the issue of poverty as part of its social control function. Using the netnography research method, this study examines two issues: the narratives of poverty presented by Kompas and the ideology underpinning them, as well as the audience’s response to such coverage. The subject of this study comprises Kompas’s posts on X (Twitter), Instagram and Facebook regarding the “Suara Tak Terdengar” (Unheard Voices) reporting programme throughout 2024. The findings indicate that Kompas has successfully raised the issue of poverty on social media, attracting the audience’s attention, although there are still limitations in engagement on certain issues. This article also demonstrates that the issue of poverty can still be addressed whilst upholding humanitarian principles and simultaneously serving as a tool for state control. These findings also distinguish this study from previous research, which suggested that coverage of poverty on social media tends to focus on individual cases and is prone to reinforcing negative stereotypes of the poor.
