Abstract

This study investigates the socio-psychological reactions and coping strategies of urban outskirts residents in Surabaya, Indonesia, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Through a combination of quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews with 100 respondents, the research explores how individuals perceive and respond to the abundance of information about COVID-19, including its origins, death tolls, and misinformation on mainstream and social media platforms. While some respondents feel devastated by the information overload, others surrender to the belief that the pandemic is destined by a higher power. Coping mechanisms vary, with some focusing on boosting immunity through vitamins and herbal drinks, engaging in cultural rituals, or turning to religious spirituality. The study draws on perspectives from Communication and Health Anthropology to offer a comprehensive understanding of local practices in response to the pandemic, contributing to broader global Sustainable Development Goals.

Abstract

Social media (paid) as a medium to meet the information needs of Korean entertainment shows which are very limited can be watched through Indonesian television media. Of course, this does not rule out the transmission of foreign cultural values and norms that colour and influence the culture of the society in Indonesia. This research aim is to determine what kind of contribution or affect the transmission of Korean culture includes cognitive, affective and behavioural aspects. The method used in this research is descriptive. The technique of collecting data through interviews with informants uses a purposive sampling technique, which is where informants are selected with specific considerations and goals and based on their accessibility by the researcher. The results of this study indicate that there is a process of transmission of Korean popular culture that contributes to the impact of acceptance on the audience from cognitive, affective to conative or behavioural aspects. Among them include, increasing knowledge and understanding, generating interest and changing views, as well as imitating, identifying, and adopting behaviour in terms of imitation and identification theory. This study concludes that the transmission of Korean culture such as Korean drama through social media contributes to the impact of acceptance on the audience, from cognitive, affective to conative or behavioural aspects.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the impact of reputation, predictability, and risk on user trust in telemedicine consultation services. User trust is a crucial factor in the adoption and sustainability of telemedicine services. This research uses Perceived Risk Theory to explore the effects of risk on user perceptions and examines how reputation and predictability influence trust. The method employed is a quantitative survey with questionnaires distributed to telemedicine service users between January 16 and February 16, 2023. The unit of analysis in this study is users who have utilized telemedicine services, especially in health consultation, at least once. The findings reveal that the combined contribution of the three variables (reputation, predictability, and risk) to user trust is 25.7%, as indicated by the coefficient of determination (R²). This means that 74.3% of user trust is influenced by factors outside of reputation, predictability, and risk, such as service quality, user experience, and direct interaction with service providers. This research provides insights that while these three variables have a significant impact, other factors also play a crucial role in building user trust in telemedicine consultation services.

Abstract

Climate change presents serious threats to highland agricultural areas such as Dieng (Central Java) and Karo (North Sumatra), where farmers increasingly experience irregular weather patterns, prolonged droughts, and frost events (bun upas). This study examines how the government communicates climate adaptation innovations—particularly through the Farmer Field School (Sekolah Lapang, SL) program and the work of agricultural extension officers (Penyuluh Pertanian Lapangan, PPL)—to support farmers in these vulnerable regions. Innovations such as the application of Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB), Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR), and basic frost prevention strategies have been introduced since 2022 through Farmer Field School (SL) initiatives led by local agricultural departments. Guided by Rogers’ Diffusion of Innovation Theory, this qualitative research involved semi-structured interviews with six farmers and two Agricultural Extension Officers. The analysis focuses on five diffusion stages: knowledge, persuasion, decision, implementation, and confirmation. The findings show that while farmers in both regions are increasingly aware of climate change (knowledge stage), many receive information from peers or media rather than official channels. In Dieng, adoption is constrained by resource competition with tourism and limited frost response strategies. In Karo, although media use is higher, government messaging still lacks practical, region-specific guidance. The study reveals key gaps in the persuasion and implementation phases, suggesting that existing communication efforts remain too generic and insufficiently persuasive. It recommends more localized, trust-based, and multi-channel communication strategies tailored to the unique environmental conditions of each region. The research contributes to the understanding of how institutional communication can better support innovation adoption in climate-vulnerable farming communities.

Abstract

The Internet has helped marketers to reach larger markets and potential consumers at any time or place. The change in advertising activities and the advent of social media has moved marketers from conventional to social media because advertising costs are far cheaper and measurable. Marketing of batik products use Instagram to promote their products. This study is focused on the elements of copywriting and the types of copywriting applied to the social media of Instagram @batiksemarang16 as a marketing communication to their audiences. This study uses qualitative approaches and descriptive methods. The data collection techniques used are observation, a documentary of content containing elements of copywriting, copywriting from Instagram @batiksemarang16, and archive studies. Hopefully, the results of this study will become a reference to copywriting in the process of advertising on social media. The content of the @batiksemarang16 account uses the suggested elements of copywriting, such as headlines, sub-headlines and body copy, but instead of using slogans and taglines. This research found that combining copywriting elements makes content more creative and adds value to that copywriting. There were ten types of copywriting that were found on @batiksemarangang16.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of electric vehicle (EV) issues in Indonesian mass media to understand how science, policy, and public discourse intersect in the context of sustainable transportation. Through a mixed-method content analysis of three major online news outlets—Kompas.com, Detik.com, and CNN Indonesia—spanning the years 2023–2024, the research reveals that media coverage is dominated by government narratives, focusing heavily on policy initiatives, subsidies, and market trends. Meanwhile, perspectives from civil society, academics, and environmental advocates remain underrepresented. Scientific information—particularly concerning EV lifecycle emissions, battery supply chains, and broader environmental trade-offs—is largely absent or presented without sufficient depth or balance. The study argues that the media must adopt a more inclusive, evidence-based approach to science communication to better inform the public, support democratic participation in policy-making, and promote informed societal engagement with Indonesia’s transition to sustainable transport.

Abstract

Religiously motivated radical extremism has been a major source of concern around the world, including Indonesia. Governments, communities, and civil society organizations (CSOs) are launching a variety of initiatives to prevent and combat violent extremism (P/CVE), including the use of various media platforms. This study looks at how two CSOs in Indonesia, Kreasi Prasasti Perdamaian (KPP) and Peace Generation (PeaceGen), handle various media (transmedia organizing) in P/CVE initiatives. Data collection included (1) in-depth interviews with each CSO's team members, (2) observation of some of their activities, and (3) document analysis of various media products. The findings of this study show that the transmedia organizing of both CSOs has paved the way for increased participation from the movement base, thereby strengthening social movement identity. This research contributes to the view of the critical role and understanding of the media in preventing and counteracting violent extremism due to the increasingly strong influence of the media in everyday life and the fact that terrorist and radical organizations also use the media for propaganda and recruitment.

Abstract

Mainstream media shows a gap in engaging public participation, producing alternative content, and introducing social change. It is hoped that alternative media can be counter-hegemonic to mainstream media by providing a different perspective from the dominance of existing information. Women's alternative media can provide a voice and platform to empower women and place women's issues in their reporting. This study uses a critical paradigm with a qualitative approach and case study design. Researchers use the concepts of development communication, development journalism, and alternative media. The primary research subjects (informants) are the editors-in-chief or executive editors of five women's alternative media. The results of this study explain that women's alternative media contribute to the creation of a more inclusive and equitable space in society. They change negative narratives and stereotypes about women that frequently appear in mainstream media by creating more positive and accurate representations. They use creative and innovative ways to provide educational content about job skills, training, and self-development. They promote role models by featuring women's success stories in various fields. They interact directly with their communities to better connect with their audiences, understand their needs, and utilize digital platforms and social media to reach a wider audience.

Abstract

Social media has evolved into an inclusive communication tool, enabling individuals with disabilities to share various messages with the broader public. This study explores how the educational content shared by the TikTok account @jennifernatalie_ fosters audience engagement with deaf-related issues. Using a qualitative approach through content analysis, the research examines how five dimensions of Social Media Influencer (SMI) communication—namely information usefulness, dialogic interaction, affectivity, collectivity, and connectivity—are manifested in the content uploaded. The analysis was conducted on 189 selected videos from four educational-themed playlists. Findings indicate that despite verbal communication limitations, @jennifernatalie_ effectively utilizes social media features to communicate in a creative and inclusive manner, delivering messages that foster emotional connection and interactive engagement. Through her authentic expression as a deaf individual, she succeeds in activating audience participation via comments, likes, and two-way conversations. This study highlights how influencer communication characteristics play a pivotal role in shaping engagement, particularly in disability-related topics. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of inclusive communication practices on social media and the role of disabled influencers in fostering digital social interaction.

Abstract

Women must grasp the idea of domestic abuse in order to anticipate if they spot incidents of it.  The purpose of the study was to evaluate the relationship between perceptions of domestic violence and online community engagement on social media. This study used a survey method by distributing questionnaires through social media. The population were women social media users and used purposive sampling techniques with the criteria that respondents were married or had been married, had been victims of domestic violence (physical or mental), and had accessed domestic violence issues on social media in the last six months. Data collection was carried out in July-August 2024. The data was obtained from 300 women and analyzed using the SPSS 25 application. The results show that there is a significant correlation between perceptions of domestic violence and online community engagement in the community of domestic violence victims on social media. However, the strength of the relationship is low. Further analysis shows that the differences in respondents' community engagement levels were divided into three perception ownership groups. The findings suggest that women victims of domestic violence might join groups on social media to receive direction and counsel meant to assist with their issues.
