Interpretation of cultural terms meaning between spoken languages is not often simply a word to word transference from a source language into a target language. This research is intended to investigate the strategies used by Indonesian tourist guides to interpret cultural terms during providing assistance and information to English speaking tourists visiting four royal palaces in Surakarta and Yogyakarta cities. This study is of a qualitative and descriptive nature. The data were collected through joining twenty guided group tours in Kasunanan Palace, Mangkunegaran Palace (Surakarta City), Kasultanan Palace and Pakualaman Palace (Yogyakarta City) and recording the tourist guides interpretation of cultural terms to tourists. The cultural terms were classified into five categories: palace properties, royal heirlooms, ancient weapons, precious antiques and cultural ceremonies. The research findings show that the interpretation strategies used by tourist guides to interpret cultural terms are: addition, borrowing, cultural equivalent, descriptive equivalent and componential analysis. The findings indicate strongly that the Indonesian tourist guides should improve their interpretation skills in order that their guiding services become more meaningful, especially to overcome cultural obstacles.

Lecturers’ talk during classes stimulates active students, as a means of a successful lecture. This study investigated the levels of questioning used by lecturers. The data, collected from the participants having more than ten year professional experience, were described qualitatively. Observation and interview were used to generate the data. The findings of this study indicated the questions level based on Bloom’s revised taxonomy. Mostly used was the low and middle order thinking, less encouraging students’ critical thinking. Noted 66 questions or about 73% of the total question belong to low order. 22 questions or 25% of all were included medium order. The rest of them, the least of all, 2 questions or equally to 2% were high order. Thus, students and lecturers could use the Bloom taxonomy to administer class activities with sufficient preparation, while further research might examine how to employ high order thinking skill in various areas.Â

The development of technology has enriched the educational practices in many settings including in Indonesia. The use of technology has contributed a lot to many teaching and learning activities both inside and outside the classrooms in Indonesian contexts, especially in foreign language education like English. This is likely to be a good sign to welcome English language education 4.0. However, the success of English language education 4.0 also depends also on students’ readiness to be more independent or autonomous in their English learning. Our qualitative study has revealed that students in English education department still have difficulties in maintaining their autonomy level in learning. The learner autonomy is dynamic in the way that its level keeps changing. This may turn into a particular challenge for the enactment of English language education 4.0 if the students are not equipped with the skills to maintain their autonomy level in their English learning.

This article discusses about the accuracy and readability on the translations of onomatopoeia in The Maze Runner novel translated by Yunita Candra in order to evaluate the translation quality. All onomatopoeia both from English or translated novel were collected and then looked for the meaning in Cambridge Dictionary, Oxford Dictionary, Indonesian Dictionary ( KBBI), and in some sources such as books, internet, or cross checking from native or experts, then compared and determined the accuracy and readability level using Translation Accuracy Assessment Instrument and Translation Readability Assessment Instrument [1]. The result showed that accuracy and readability related to each other. Onomatopoeia translated accurately tended to have low readability level and there were onomatopoeia intentionally translated inaccurately to obtain high readability level. Nevertheless, there were also the translations of onomatopoeia with high accuracy level and readability level.

The purposes of this study, aim to investigate the needs on speaking tasks of Thai Undergraduate by non-English major freshmen students from Udon Thani Rajabhat University and to find out the behavior of using Facebook in the course of English for Communication at Udon Thani Rajabhat University. Forty-two participants will be purposively selected from Udon Thani Rajabhat University in semester 2/2017. In research methodology, the questionnaire survey and focus-group interview (a semi-structured interview) were used in this study. The results showed that the participants were highly satisfied for using Facebook to do the speaking tasks. However, they didn’t spend much about practice hour and prepare for the conversational videos. Furthermore, five teachers of English will be interviewed for sharing the problems and needs in English for communication teaching

Digitalization era could not be separated from using smartphones in people life activities. Everybody has got smartphones as they are handy to bring, not only easy to operate and to connect but also be connected. Therefore, most students use their smartphones during teaching learning process in the classroom during teaching learning process in the classroom, as they provide so many applications to be used. So, why dont we maximize their functions in the teaching learning process rather than keep asking students not to use their smartphones by updating status on their social media, browsing or playing games secretly. This paper is talking about how teachers use the social media to be interacted and be very useful during teaching learning process. The connectivity of internet provide by the campus is free, so the teachers could make a group of WhatsAp or Line used as media of giving and doing tasks. The paper talks about what application and activities used to be integrated and interesting process in teaching and learning English.

This research-based paper presents the investigation on Morphological process of tabale language in Palu Central-Sulawesi. Therefore, the aims of this study are to describe the use of Tabale language in Palu Perumnas Balaroa and to introduce the uniqueness of the jargon (Tabale language) to the public.This study used descriptive qualitative method. This research also used Remembering method to collect the data, because the researcher himself was the native of this jargon language, the other method which was used was agih method to analyze the data. This research result showed the public about the uniqueness of morphological process in Bahasatabale such as (1. Ma-kanbecomeKan-ma, 2. Ti-durbecomeDur-ti, 3. Se-le-sai become Le-sai-se, 4. Me-nung-gu become Ba-gu-tung, 5.Ter-ti-dur become Ta-dur-ti).

This study aims to describe relative clauses produced by English Learners in Kampung Inggris Pare Kediri. The description of relative clauses produced is to know the kind of relative clauses English learners can and cannot produce. Data was obtained from learners’ essay in IELTS simulation test part writing. Result says that English Learners can only produce relative clauses which relativize H as subject with 85.7% of percentage, as object with 8.5%, and as adverb with 5.8% of percentage. RCs whose H position is in possessive, object of preposition, and indirect object do not appear in the data. While for relational relative clause, cleft relative clause is also not produced by learners. Further, error analysis says that the errors learners produce are divided into six types: 1) error in using relativizer, 2) producing unneeded relative clauses, 3) The absence of relative pronouns, 4) Error in using verb in relative clause, and 5) Error in H-V agreement.53.4%

This paper aims at describing the model of teaching paragraph writing based on Carl Ransom Rogers’ theory. Carl Ransom Rogers is one of the leading figures of humanist learning theory. Based on this theory, the learning process is to help learners to be able to achieve their self-realization in accordance with the basic skills and uniqueness of the learners. The significance of the learner (significant learning) is very influential on the learning process. It occurs when learning is felt relevant to the needs and goals of the students. Related to the enactment of the President of the Republic of Indonesia number 87 of 2017 on September 6, 2017 on Strengthening Character Education (Penguatan Pendidikan Karakter), abbreviated as PPK, it is necessary to develop the models of teaching and learning of paragraph writing that can integrate the skills of writing and character education. It proved that implementing models of teaching paragraph writing through Question and Answer, Humanistic, Creative Problem Solving, Demonstration, Discussion, and Grouping Model supports the establishment of communication and personal relationships between persons and individuals, groups within the school community. It means that through those models, the learners can acquire the knowledge of writing and character education as well.

Reduction in subtitling is inevitable due to technical rules of time and space as well as synchronization, i.e. displaying subtitle when the utterance/dialogue is spoken. Consequently, reduction leads to the loss of meaning incorporated into the subtitle. Reduction takes place within linguistic unit, such as word, group of words, even clause/sentence. Under the scrutiny of experiential dimension within ideational metafunction of Systemic Functional Linguistics, this qualitative study article discusses the results of a study on how far reduction of English Nominal Group (NG) elements as experiential structure has contributed to alteration of entity expression in the Indonesian subtitle of The Kingdom (2007), of which the objective data were collected by way of purposive sampling. The results show that reduction of English NG experiential structure set new expression of entity and even reduction of the NG main element, Thing, resulted in the loss of entity in the subtitle.
