Abstract

This study examines the dynamics of Javanese wedding traditions that have retained their cultural essence despite acculturation with Arab culture and modernization. A qualitative, descriptive-analytical approach was used to observe traditional Javanese wedding ceremonies and how they have changed in response to external cultural influences. Data were obtained through direct observation of wedding ceremonies in Java and analyzed using triangulation techniques. The results show that, while Javanese weddings maintain traditional values such as togetherness and family harmony, elements of Javanese culture have been modified to align with Islamic values. For example, the accompaniment of the bride and groom with gamelan music and traditional dodot clothing has been replaced with sholawat and tambourines. The study also revealed changes in guest seating arrangements, with some families adopting the Arab tradition of separating male and female guests. This study provides insight into how Javanese culture remains alive and relevant by maintaining traditions while adapting to modernization and outside cultural influences. It also provides an example of cultural flexibility in the face of changing times.

Abstract

Studies on Muludan often overlook the active role of Hadrah in shaping youth identity, frequently treating it as mere accompaniment. This research analyzes the symbiotic nexus between the Muludan tradition and Hadrah performance in Pabuaran, Subang, focusing on its function as a medium for cultural regeneration. Using a qualitative case study method, the study involved six key informants from the Markazul Anshor group, including religious authorities and youth practitioners aged 16–20. Data were analyzed through thematic coding and interpreted using Social Identity Theory and the concept of Collective Effervescence. The findings reveal a chronological transition in musical hegemony from Qasidah and Marawis to Hadrah, which has transformed into a pop culture phenomenon. Hadrah provides youth with symbolic capital and social pride, bridging the gap between sacred ritual and contemporary identity. This research confirms that Hadrah is a vital mechanism for cultural regeneration, ensuring the vitality of Islam Nusantara traditions among the younger generation in a Nahdlatul Ulama environment.

Abstract

This article examines religious practices in contemporary performance through a sociological approach grounded in the Eastern cultural context of Indonesia. The study focuses on how monologue theatre Amir Nasution, Topeng Monyet (the monkey show) performances, theatrical livestreams of online commerce, and digital stages within WhatsApp groups function as social arenas where religious values are produced, negotiated, and reflected. Religious experience is not understood as fixed doctrine but as a social construction that is symbolic, theatrical, and performative. The sociology of religion provides the framework to interpret how rituals, symbols, and religious practices emerge within the everyday life of Indonesian society, which is shaped by collectivist values and the spiritual ethos of Eastern culture. The meaning of religiosity in performance is layered and dynamic, shaped by social interaction, local traditions, and symbolic actions that emphasize harmony and solidarity. WhatsApp groups, as digital spaces of interaction, are understood as spontaneous forms of metatheatre that embody dramatic structure, performative awareness, and fluid spiritual moments, reflecting religious practices in Eastern communities in the digital era. This article argues that theatre—whether conventional, digital, or metatheatrical—constitutes a social space relevant to contemporary life and offers religious experiences that resonate with the inclusive, collective, and tradition-rooted character of Indonesian Eastern culture.

Abstract

Syair Burung Pungguk is one of the classical Malay poems depicting the spiritual and existential struggle of humanity through the symbolism of longing and solitude. Through the lens of Islamic World Area Studies, this text can be read as a representation of the transformation of Islamic values rooted in the local experiences of the Malay society in Southeast Asia. This study applies a hermeneutic-cultural approach with the principle of defamiliarization to reinterpret the poem within the Islamic cultural context of the region. The analysis was conducted on the translated version Syair Burung Pungguk by Arief Rahman and Didik Purwanto (2021, National Library Press) by considering the textual side through the concept of defamiliarization combined with the perspective of Islamic Regional Studies. The findings suggest that the symbolism of the owl and the moon reflects the unique Malay-Islamic religiosity centered on mystical longing for the Divine, reaffirming that literature serves as an arena where universal Islamic teachings are aesthetically and culturally localized. Thus, this poem is not merely a literary artifact but a site of encounter between the universal principles of Islam and the cultural expressions of the Malay world rooted in Sufi sensibility.

Abstract

Tahlilan tradition is a religious practice that has become an integral part of Indonesian culture, including in Koto Tinggi Village. However, in the context of the Muhammadiyah community, approaches to this tradition often encounter different understandings and interpretations. This research aims to explore the perception of the Muhammadiyah community towards the tahlilan tradition in Koto Tinggi Village. A qualitative research method was employed by conducting in-depth interviews with various members of the Muhammadiyah community with diverse backgrounds and social standings. Data analysis revealed variations in the Muhammadiyah community's views on the tahlilan practice, ranging from those who consider it an integral part of worship and social solidarity to those who criticize it as bid'ah or a religious practice not in accordance with Islamic teachings. The findings of this research provide insights into the dynamics of religious thought and practices within the Muhammadiyah community in Koto Tinggi Village, as well as depict the important role of dialogue and mutual understanding in addressing differences in religious interpretations within a multicultural society. This research contributes to understanding the complexity of religious dynamics in Indonesia, particularly in the context of the tahlilan tradition among the Muhammadiyah community.

Abstract

The Malay language (Bahasa Melayu) played a crucial role in the development of Islam in Aceh, both as a lingua franca and as a medium for the transmission of knowledge through Jawi manuscripts. This study aims to analyze the profound contribution of the Malay language to the enrichment of religious, literary, and official Islamic documents in Aceh in the past. The research method employed is a qualitative approach using descriptive-analytical analysis. Data were collected through a literature review of ancient manuscripts and religious documents in the Malay language, and supplemented by in-depth interviews with historians and religious figures in Aceh. Data analysis involved data reduction, identifying patterns of language use within an Islamic context, and contextualizing these findings within the development of local culture. The results of the study indicate that the Malay language served as a cornerstone in the codification of Islamic teachings in Aceh. Its presence in classical religious texts proved to accelerate the diffusion and understanding of Islam among the people, while simultaneously integrating local scholarly traditions into the intellectual network of the Malay-Nusantara world. The majority of historical administrative documents and literary works discovered use this language, indicating the strong sociolinguistic influence of Malay within Aceh’s Islamic institutions. This study concludes that the Malay language is not merely a tool for transactional communication but a cultural artifact that shapes the intellectual identity of Islam in the region. Consequently, efforts to digitize, preserve, and re-examine ancient manuscripts written in Malay have become a matter of great urgency. This step is crucial for safeguarding the continuity of historical heritage and ensuring that the roots of Aceh’s Islamic heritage remain alive and continue to flourish in the future.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the Eid Kupatan tradition brought by the Javanese Muslim diaspora to Malaysia. The Kupatan tradition is a tradition that existed among Javanese Muslims which was introduced by Sunan Kalijaga during the Demak Kingdom for the Islamization process at that time. The Kupatan tradition is carried out seven days after Eid al-Fitr, in Javanese, ketupat or kupat is interpreted as "Jharwa dhosok" which also means "admit Lepat" that is, one must be able to apologize when one makes a mistake. In the Kupatan tradition, ketupat is the main dish, a rice- based ketupat wrapped in janur or young coconut leaves in a rectangular shape. The presence of the Kupatan tradition in Malaysia was brought about by the Javanese Muslim diaspora community, the local Malaysian community accepted the Kupatan tradition because they have several similarities in tradition, such as language, culture and religion, therefore the Kupatan tradition was well received and produced positive values for Malaysian local community. In its development, the Javanese Muslim Eid Kupatan tradition in the Javanese Muslim diaspora has acculturated, but does not change essential things or the meaning of the tradition, it is evident that the purpose of holding the Eid Kupatan tradition is still in accordance with the original meaning and purpose. The tradition of Eid Kupatan for the Javanese Muslim diaspora in Malaysia has become a separate identity for the Javanese Muslim diaspora, because other Muslim diaspora communities do not do that, and have different characteristics. This research method uses a qualitative approach.

Abstract

While existing literature extensively examines the socio-economic mechanisms of informal credit, the subtle linguistic strategies that mediate these vulnerable transactions remain underexplored. This study investigates the semantic shift of the Sundanese term manawi within the framework of social embeddedness and informal credit practices in Bandung. The primary objective is to analyze how this linguistic transformation functions as a social negotiation tool in relationship-based economic transactions. Employing a qualitative descriptive-interpretative phenomenological method, data were gathered through semi-structured, in-depth interviews with five purposive Sundanese-speaking participants and analyzed via Moustakas's framework. The results reveal that manawi has expanded from its conventional role as a modal adverb meaning "perhaps" into a functional verb implicitly representing the act of borrowing money. Driven by post-pandemic financial precarity, this semantic narrowing serves as a critical face-saving strategy, allowing vulnerable actors to address urgent economic survival needs while maintaining interpersonal harmony. Theoretically, this research provides nuanced empirical insights into the intersection of linguistics and economic sociology, demonstrating how language adapts to cushion economic vulnerability.
