Abstract

Lesson Study as a growing interest in the education world has attracted educators, experts, and professionals in the area to make use of it in improving the lessons—it also happens in Indonesia. Originally applied in the teaching of mathematics in Japan, now it turns to be used in other fields, and English is one of them. This paper highlights the guideline on Lesson Study and pictures its application in a private senior high school in Malang, East Java, Indonesia. The adaptation of Lesson Study is interesting since Japan and Indonesia have different cultural background. How Lesson Study is usually implemented in Japan and the US and how it is applied in Indonesia will be seen here. As this is a case study, it will only focus on a school and the result should not be used to generalize Lesson Study applications in Indonesia. Interview and observation were instruments used in this study. The interview was used to gain information on how Lesson Study was normally conducted and observation (and the researchers’ involvements) was used to see the real implementation of Lesson Study. What happened during the implementation of Lesson Study and during the teaching and learning process become a great attention here.

Abstract

ABSTRACT: The position of English literature, especially its novels in the 19th century as the proponent of English imperialism-colonialism, proved that literature – as another discipline as well – would not be an innocent discipline, and never has been. English literature was then placed as the hegemonic power, which manifested in the imperial-colonial discourses to sustain imperialism-colonialism, since the power of its content can leave an influence behind the colonized people. From this stance as well, then, the politics of English language appeared to accompany the imperial-colonial discourses. The politics of English language in English literature was the foremost notion of English language growth or expansion all over the world, which is nowadays known by several names, such as Global English(es), World English(es), and English as an International Language. The result of the research showed that the two novels, “Lord Jim” written by Joseph Conrad (1992) and “Kim” written by Rudyard Kipling (1993), were indeed the imperial-colonial texts which reflected and represented the imperial-colonial discourses and the politics of English language within their narratives. In the imperial-colonial discourses, the two novels represented the characteristics of hegemony and power, hybrid cultural identity, and politics of difference and racism which representatively existed there, as well as the ideological interests of their narratives to be a system of statements (theorizing knowledge) which theorizes the colonized (indigenous) people. Abstract

The relationship of classroom to the outside world is a reciprocal one, meaning that classrooms are part of the world in which socio-politics is included. The students become successful literary readers as well as critical thinkers who have socio-political awareness if the classroom conducts an ‘extensive reading’ by ‘letting the students in’. The implication of these understandings for the work of EFL teachers is to give a vindication that literature can fully become the best authentic material in the teaching and learning of English, especially for reading class of the college students. In certain ways, this is also aimed to promote literature as a device to build students’ socio-political awareness, because literature, we are told, is vitally engaged with the living situations of men and women: it’s concrete rather than abstract, displays life in all its rich variousness.

Abstract

This research deals with the interpersonal meaning of Soekarno’s speech in the first 1955 Asian-African Conference. The study focuses on analysing mood types and choice of modality in that speech. As the speech brought the theme of spirit of solidarity and brotherhood, then this study aims at examining how the choice of mood types and modality represent this theme. To realize this, the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistic (SFL), particularly on mood and modality system by Halliday and Mathiessen (2004), is employed. From the discussion, it is found that clauses are mostly categorized as declarative clauses. It proves that the Asian-African Conference was held by the realization of solidarity and brotherhood. The use of declarative clauses indicates the speaker’s competences in delivering persuasive speeches by conveying factual information. In addition, it is found that the speaker is neutral and seems to have close relation with the audience. Meanwhile, the use of low degree of modality is helpful to encourage the audience’s confidence to act together.
