Abstract

In this modern era, students who are literate are needed, namely those who understand scientific facts and their application to everyday life. Biology is subject that is needed in everyday life, so it is necessary for students to have a high level of biological literacy. One way to improve biological literacy is by applying cooperative and constructive learning models, namely Think Pair Share combined with Reading Questioning Answering. This study aims to determine the effect of the Think Pair Share (TPS) Learning Model combined with Reading Questioning Answering (RQA) on the Biological Literacy of Students at SMAN 13 Jakarta on the reproductive system. The research was conducted in May 2023 using a quasi-experimental research method with a pretest-posttest control group design. The research sample was selected by simple random sampling. The prerequisite test used is the normality test with the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and the homogeneity test using the F test. Statistical hypothesis test with the independent t-test obtained the results of accept H0 at α = 0.05, which means that there is no influence of the Think Pair Share (TPS) learning model combined with Reading Questioning Answering (RQA) Biological Literacy’s students on reproductive system.

Abstract

Local wisdom, such as the Peutron Aneuk tradition practiced in Southern Aceh, represents a valuable national asset and potential learning resource. This research explores the Peutron Aneuk tradition to identify its potential applications within biology education. By employing a qualitative methodology, specifically a literature review combined with interviews of local traditional elders, this study investigates the cultural significance and practical applications of Peutron Aneuk. The findings illustrate how elements of this tradition can be integrated into biology curricula, offering a culturally relevant and engaging approach to learning. The results highlight the relevance of Peutron Aneuk to various biological concepts, particularly biodiversity. This study contributes to understanding how local wisdom can enrich and enhance educational practices

Abstract

This study aims to (1) observe biology learning activities on environmental change and (2) analyze the level of research skills of high school students on the concept of environmental change. This research used a descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach to understand an issue or problem using a case within a certain period by collecting data from various sources such as observation, interviews, and documents. The data collection technique used was non-participant. The instrument used in this study was an observation sheet to observe learning activities carried out by the teacher. In addition, interviews were conducted with teachers, and questionnaires were given to students to obtain information on the extent to which teachers and students know research skills and to see the level of research skills possessed by students. The research results show that the teacher’s learning process has not directed students to develop research skills, so the research skills profile in the sample studied is still lacking and not optimal.

Abstract

This research aims to improve students' critical thinking skills through an inquiry learning model on ecosystem material at MA Alkhairaat Bolangitang Barat. This research method is descriptive quantitative using a pre-experimental design type One Group Pretest-Posttest Design. Data were collected using observation sheets of inquiry learning implementation, student activity, and critical thinking indicator questions (tests).. The data analysis techniques used are the critical thinking ability and N-Gain categories. The average score before learning (Pre-test) was 25 and increased after implementing the inquiry learning model (Post-test) with an average score of 73. Apart from that, the normalization value of Gain was obtained from students' understanding of the Ecosystem material, reaching 0.63 with medium criteria. Based on the research results, it can be concluded that the inquiry learning model can improve students' critical thinking skills on ecosystem material. This can be seen from the results of the percentage of scores on the critical thinking ability indicator in the posttest scores which shows that the results of the students' posttest scores are higher than the pretest scores. This is because students are able to be actively involved and have the courage to ask questions and express opinions.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop a Student Worksheet (LKPD) on the human digestive system material integrated with Interactive Augmented Reality (IAR) using Android and to evaluate its feasibility based on expert, teacher, and student assessments. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach with the 4D model consisting of Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate stages. Data were collected through validation questionnaires from material and media experts and assessment questionnaires from science teachers and students. The trial subjects were Grade VIII students at SMP Muhammadiyah Kuala Tungkal. Material expert validation was carried out in three stages, resulting in a 100% score, categorized as “Very Feasible.” Media expert validation, conducted in two phases, obtained a score of 95%, also categorized as “Very Feasible.” Science teacher assessment yielded 85% (“Very Eligible”), while student assessments showed 81% in the small group trial and 84% in the large group trial, both categorized as “Very Eligible”. The findings indicate that the developed LKPD, supported by Interactive Augmented Reality technology on Android, meets the feasibility standards for use as a learning medium and teaching material for Grade VIII junior high school students in the human digestive system topic. This integration of IAR is expected to enhance learning interactivity, student engagement, and conceptual understanding in science education.

Abstract

This study investigates the development and effectiveness of a STEM-based flipbook designed to enhance students’ scientific creativity in biology, specifically focusing on environmental change topics. Scientific creativity is increasingly vital in addressing technological and societal challenges, prompting the integration of STEM elements into educational materials. The flipbook was developed using the ADDIE model, encompassing five stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. During the design stage, STEM components—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—were embedded to support student engagement and understanding. The research involved 31 Grade X students and utilized pre-test and post-test assessments to measure the impact on scientific creativity skills. Data analysis was conducted using quantitative descriptive methods and SPSS software for statistical testing. Expert validation indicated excellent content and media quality (95% and 97.5%, respectively), affirming the flipbook’s educational relevance. Results showed a significant improvement in students’ scientific creativity, with average scores rising from 71.4 to 90.4 and an N-Gain of 0.44, categorized as moderate. The Wilcoxon test yielded a p-value of 0.001, indicating statistically significant improvement. Teacher and student responses were highly positive, with 100% and 85% satisfaction ratings, respectively. These findings suggest that STEM-based flipbooks can effectively enhance students’ creative thinking and problem-solving skills in biology. The study concludes that interactive STEM-integrated materials are valuable tools for fostering 21st-century skills and recommends broader implementation in science education to improve learning outcomes and student engagement.

Abstract

Environmental literacy assessment of pre-service science teacher candidates is no patent, so there is a need to develop special instruments for science teachers candidates that are in accordance with the character of the subject to be studied. This study aimed to develop a valid and reliable instrument to be used for measuring science teacher candidate’s environmental knowledge of environmental literacy. This instrument was validated by two experts and widely pilot testing involves 31 science teacher candidates from biology teacher candidates, physics teacher candidates, and chemistry teacher candidates. Results of content validation in this study, show that experts suggested to revise five questions. Results of criteria validation in this study by mean of Cronbach Alpha test show that only seven of 15 questions that can be used to assess the environmental knowledge of science teacher candidates. One question item received without correction and six other questions received with revision. The reliability of the instrument was measured using the Kuder Richardson 20 (KR 20) test and the result was 0.63, which means the instrument was acceptable for use. The results of this study indicate that the instrument is valid and reliable for the assessment of science teacher candidate’s environmental knowledge. However, this instrument still has to be tested again if it is to be used to measure the validity and reliability of the instrument before to be used to measure another data.
