JUSPI (Jurnal Sejarah Peradaban Islam) publishes scientific articles in the fields of historical, social and humanities. JUSPI invites academics to publish their research articles, especially historical, social and humanities studies with Islamic themes, for example about Islamic groups or communities, Muslim minorities, culture and traditions, education, organization and politics, civilization, heritage and architecture, social change, intellectual and thought, biography, historiography, press and literacy, as well as science and technology. The editor also received a book review to be published in a special section of the publication. The articles can be written to be submitted in Indonesia and English. JUSPI is published by the Department of Sejarah Peradaban Islam, Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara. It is published twice a year in July and January.

Abstract

 This research aims to discuss about Islamic education, especially the pesantren institution which located in Medan. Pesantren Ar-Raudhlatul Hasanah is an object in this research by using the qualitative method and field research. About 34 years, this pesantren became an important part to developing Islamic education and furthermore to build the character Indonesian generations, especially in Medan. This pesantren also have santri (student) whose came from neighbors state, such as Malaysia and Thailand. As a modern education institution, this pesantren success to integrate between the Kuliiyatul Mu’allimin Al-Islamiyah as the curriculum which adopted from Modern Pesantren Gontor and the National Curriculum. So this pesantren have three roles: as the pesantren, the madrasah, and the school.Keywords:Pesantren Ar-Raudlatul Hasanah, Islamic education system, character of the nation.

Abstract

Abstract This research discusses the development of urban transport in Medan during the first half of 20th century. In this period, Medan was the city at outside Java that had the most good strides in social and economic life. Although the urban situation had a remarkable development, but the transport system was not complicated as well as Batavia or Surabaya. Therefore, the problem of this thesis emphasize the urban transportation development in the midst of Medan urban’s development. The urban spaces, the dynamics of employing transportation, and regulation are some important factors which discuss in this thesis. This research analyzing primary and secondary sources which include archives, newspapers, magazines, photographs, and other references. There are several findings in this thesis. First, most of the urban streets in Medan were built originally for the plantation needs, before then became the public road and the urban main street. Second, although the mechanic vehicle had existed, but generally, the urban center was filled by the smaller number of upper middle class rather than lower middle class groups which generally live at suburbs. Third, the policy on the Medan urban transport system was not fully held by the city government, because the other parties of non-government also intervenes to adjust their personal or group interests. Fourth, public transport which could carry mass passenger tends to be marginalized by economic reasons, i.e. the economic opportunity where people engaged in transportation was lost and effect on peoples income. Fifth, the sorts of urban transport in Medan are connoting also to social symbol.Keywords: Development, transportation, city, spatial.

Abstract

Al-Azhar is one of the institution's pride the Islamic Ummah. History has recorded how the existence of Al-Azhar of the early Fatimid Dynasty to this day holds a great story very interesting. Not only that, Al-Azhar also contribute on the development of civilization and Islamic intellectuals. Many scientists the great scientists who were born from there. One thing that is not less important is that it turns out that the existing educational system in Al-Azhar turned out at the adoption by the institutions which exist in Western countries. Therefore, this paper will try to uncover the historical return of Al-Azhar during the Fatimid Dynasty, history of the establishment, and the factors that affect the educational system.

Abstract

 This research begins with the emergence of the name 'Kampung Qur'ani' in the village of Bandar Setia. As a heterogeneous village of ethnic and religious aspect, Bandar Setia located in the outskirts of Medan became iconik how the implementation of the 'pilot project' the idea of kampung Qur'ani. This study focuses on the historical aspect of why Kampung Qur'ani can emerge with the socio-historical setting that accompanies it. It also discusses how the idea is run, with all the challenges and conveniences that exist. The result of this research are: 1) The emergence of Kampur Qur'ani is an effort to build a new stigma that has been negatively attached to the Village of Setia, a positive image whose hope can give a new nuance to the surrounding community; 2) Kampur Qur'ani emerged because of anxiety of religious leaders in the area of Bandar Setia because of the situation of people who are far from Islamic values; 3) the strategy of forming the value of qur'ani is done through various movements, namely free nursing school for children, dawn movement in congregation and various activities of syiar qur'an that have been held; 4) The challenge of implementing Kampung Qur'ani ideas among others is, there are still many uneducated societies in mass organizing, institutional and financial management as well as community involvement that has not been fully active in the movement.

Abstract

Sentimen rasial merupakan permasalahan klasik yang terjadi antara etnis cina dan kaum pribumi di nusantara sejak masa kolonial. Tulisan ini memfokuskan diri pada permasalahan sentimen rasial di Surakarta awal abad ke-20. Adapun tujuan tulisan ini yaitu menganalisis relevansi sentimen rasial, perkecuan, dan organisasi Sarekat Islam. Karya ini menggunakan metode historis dengan teknik penelitian berupa studi pustaka. Temuan riset ini yaitu kondisi sentimen rasial yang meningkat di Surakarta awal abad ke-20 memunculkan praktik perkecuan. Meningkatnya kasus perkecuan menyebabkan munculnya sebuah organisasi yang diberi nama Sarekat Islam. Hadirnya Sarekat Islam ditengah-tengah keterpurukan sosial-ekonomi merupakan bentuk resistensi kaum pribumi dalam menghadapi persaingan dengan etnis Cina, sekaligus sebagai tindakan bertahan menghadapi kebijakan Kolonial Belanda.Kata kunci : Sentimen rasial, Perkecuan, Surakarta, Sarekat Islam

Abstract

This research examines about Islamic art (the art of dancing the Bedouin Village of Semampir) as a media of religious proselytizing. This theme is considered to be important, considering one of the efferts in delivering media of religious proselytizing of Islam is through art. As always practiced by Wali Songo in Java, with the use of various arts for this media of religious proselytizing of Islam. This study is besed of field research against Bedouin dance arts in the Village of Semampir. The primary source is the result of interviews with people involved with this study and other writings that are relevant. Results of the study show that this simple Bedouin dance art is really a media propaganda for the community of the Village of Semampir in particular and society in General. Factually, this art has renewed the knowledge society, which was not previously so religious practices in response to the group, as well as add to the scientific vocabulary for readers in General and especially writers. Side of Islam is in the art of dances at the Bedouin poetries while performing. The poetries are divided into two languages, namely Arabic and Indonesian, Arabic poetry taken from the book of Arabic Verse Barzanji and Indonesian poetry contains the opening and closing greetings. As for the movements of the dencer describes a group of people practicing war, as it has always been practiced by Bedouin Arabs.Keywords: Islamic Art, Art Dance Bedouin Village of Semampir, Media of Religious Proselytizing.

Abstract

Sultan Abdul Hamid was the Bima sultan who ruled for the longest time in the Sultanate of Bima and felt two periods namely, the VOC and the Dutch East Indies. Since the beginning of Islamization and the system of government transformed, Islamic values began to be implanted in government and experienced development. When the Company succeeded in positioning Bima, it was all difficult and declining. The existence of the sultanate began to be threatened because the sultans treated like a doll and much harm the people of Bima. This study examines the diplomacy of the time of Sultan Abdul Hamid Muhammad Syah in Bima in 1773-1817 AD, with the aim of describing the diplomacy form of the sultan in the eastern part of Indonesia, as well as describing the policy in several fields. This research provides information that Sultan Abdul Hamid seeks to create a peaceful atmosphere of the Milky Way without any bloodshed and seeks to meet all the needs of the community through its cooperation with the Company. He created the imperial emblem as a symbol of the power of the Milky Way and the power of Islam in Bima at that time, meaning that all layers of the Bima community must submit to and obey the Law of Hadat and Islamic Law. Through its engagement with the UK, people's incomes have increased from the previous through free trade in the UK. Abdul Hamid is a sultan who has a passion for history and art. He succeeded in collecting historical records now known as Bo 'Sangaji Kai, which contained the social, political, economic and cultural features that were read by later generations.

Abstract

Ali Abdul Raziq is a scholar from Egypt. He was born in 1888. His famous thought is about khilafah. In his book, the title is al-Islam wa Usul al-Hukm: Bahs fi al-Khilafah wa al-Hukumah fi al-Islam, he argues that khilafah is not an obligation in Islam. It refers to the duty of the prophet Muhammad who is only obliged to convey Islam to people, not as king or leader of a State. This clearly makes many scholars deviate from his opinion. Therefore, it is important to discuss further related to the thought of Ali Abdul Raziq about the khilafah with the formulation of the problems, (1) Biography of Ali Abdul Raziq and (2) The thought of Ali Abdul Raziq about the khilafah. This study uses historical method with stages: heuristic, verification, interpretation, and historiography. The result of this research is that Ali Abdul Raziq through his book clearly states that the khilafah is not an obligation in Islam. This was influenced by the Western thoughts, he taked when he studied in England. This opinion ultimately resulted in him being ostracized among Egyptian scholars. Nevertheless, his thinking is widespread, as evidenced by the same pattern of thinking shared by several figures in Indonesia.Keywords: Ali Abdul Raziq, Khilafah, History, Thought.

Abstract

This study focuses on the discussion of puritanisme movement in Sapeken islands Sumenep-Madura. As it is known that the area of Madura is a very loyal tradisional Islamic support base. But especially in the Sapeken islands, the puritanical Islamic can actually thrive. The purpose of this study is to know the process of development of the puritanitanism movement (Persis). This study also attempts to answer the question of why puritanical islamic is capable of developing in the Sapeken islands. Using the protestant ethic of Max Weber, it can be seen that the entry of the puritanism movement (Persis) is base on the socio-religious conditions of society which are still considered far from the pure Islamic teachings. Therefore (Persis)  perform purification of tradisional Islamic traditions and lokal art that still contains elements of takhayul, bid`ah dan khurafat, with the aim of returing the ummah to the teachings of the qur`an and sunnah. Throgh education institutions, Persis instilling a puritan ideology to the people, in addition, Persis in the Sapeken islands became more dominant religious organization, evident from the development of more rapid educational institutions due to the high work ethic of puritan muslims (Persis).

Abstract

Pengkultusan terhadap orang-orang yang dipandang suci, beserta makam-makamnya terdapat di beberapa daerah di Jawa. Salah satunya sosok Sunan Geseng yang dipercaya sebagai salah satu penyebar Islam di Jawa bagian selatan. Sunan Geseng yang sebelumnya bernama Cakrajaya atau Ki Cakrajaya merupakan sosok yang gemarlelono (mengembara), sehingga di beberapa tempat di temukan makam dan petilasannya. Salah satunya terdapat di Dusun Tirto, DesaTirto, Kecamatan Grabag, Kabupaten Magelang, Propinsi Jawa Tengah.Puncak kunjungan peziarah di makam Sunan Geseng terjadi saat digelarnyatradisi selikuran yang diadakan setiap tanggal 20-21 Ramadhan. Tradisi inidimaksudkan sebagai peringatan haul Sunan Geseng, sehingga menjadi pembedadengan situs di daerah lainnya yang telah penulis kunjungi. Keberadaan makam Sunan Geseng sangat menguntungkan masyarakat berkaitan dengan ekonomi, yaitu dengan kedatangan peziarah.
