Abstract

This study aims to explore the Islamic values contained in the traditions of the people of Kampung Adat Dukuh Dalam in Cikelet District, Garut Regency. This study is important because the traditions of indigenous peoples are often considered mere cultural heritage, whereas in the context of Kampung Adat Dukuh Dalam, these traditions are a direct reflection of the Islamic value system integrated in social and spiritual life. Using a qualitative approach with a descriptive method, this research examines the history of Kampung Adat Dukuh Dalam, the variety of traditions that have developed, and the Islamic values contained in the traditions as a guide to life. The results show that the people of Kampung Adat Dukuh Dalam live within the framework of customs sourced from the teachings of Islam brought by Sheikh Abdul Jalil. Islamic values are reflected in the form of daily, monthly, and annual traditions that are full of aqidah, worship, and moral values. In the midst of the swift flow of modernization and external influences, the community is still able to maintain its cultural identity by filtering external influences based on the principles of Islamic teachings. They reject elements that contradict the Shari'ah, and adopt those that are in line through the preservation of traditions, faith-based non-formal education, and the strengthening of communities based on Islamic values.

Abstract

This Study aims to analyze the Dutch colonial press in narrating Tegal between 1900 and 1942. It focuses on how Dutch newspapers shaped and framed realitt for their colonial interests. This study highlights how narrative bias in the colonial press deliberately of colonial government policies, making the narrative of progress and social welfare in Dutch newspapers such as De Locomotief and Bataviaasch Nieuwsblad. This study uses a historical research method divided into four crucial stages: heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography. The findings of this study indicate that Tegal was narrated in the news as a vital area for the colonial economy. News about the development and improvement of infrastructure, such as railways and ports, was  framed as an indicator of Tegal’s progress and modernization. Furthermore, the social issue of the malaria epidemic emphasized the rescue efforts of the Dutch East Indies government. Meanwhile, the root of the problem, wich stemmed from their economic policies, was ignored in the narrative. Coverage of community social activities served as a narrative frame for the news to divert attention from the health issues that were occurring in Tegal. In consclusion, in addition to its role as a transmitter of information, the colonial press also served a dual role in fulfillingb the interests of tthe colonial dovernment.

Abstract

This paper discusses the influence of the tarekat movement in the rebellion against Japan in 1944 from the pesantren in Sukamanah, Tasikmalaya, West Java. After the treaty of Kalijati, 1942, Japan took full control of the land of West Java. Sociologically it was considered to drain and enslave the people of Sukamanah, and theologically coupled with the Seikerei ritual imposed by the Japanese and considered by the leader of Sukamanah, Zaenal Mustafa, as a form of violation of Islamic principles became the motivation for the rebellion. This paper uses the historical method with a social approach. This writing uses the point of view of Sartono Kartodirdjo's social-religious approach in seeing the symptoms of resistance to Colonialism based on religious elites and the impact of a significant social change due to the oppression of colonialism which here is Japanese Imperialism, Tarekat being the only base of resistance. The final finding is that Zaenal Mustafa's role as a figure who further developed Tarekat Syattariyah, although political resistance in Java was very dominant was closely related to the development of the Tarekat Qadiriyah wa Naqsabandiyah community into a new force of resistance in West Java.

Abstract

The development of coin payphones in Jakarta in 1980-2012 reflects a significant transformation in the communication patterns of urban society. Coin payphones were introduced as an affordable communication access solution, becoming an integral part of the daily lives of Jakarta residents, from small traders to families. This study examines the history and social impact of coin payphones, which function as an inclusive means of public communication amidst rapid demographic growth. In the 1990s, coin payphones were once a public favorite, but along with the emergence of mobile phones, people began to abandon coin payphones so that their use began to decline. This study uses a historical research method consisting of heuristics, source criticism (verification), interpretation, and historiography. Through historical research, this study will identify factors that influence the popularity and decline of coin payphones, including vandalism and the transition to digital communication. The results of this study are expected to contribute to the historiography of communication in Indonesia, as well as become a reflection material for public policy related to the preservation of city artifacts and documentation of technology that once played an important role in the social life of society.

Abstract

This article explains how the development of Islam in Minangkabau acculturated with customs, until the emergence of Islamic reformers who had a major influence on the world of education in Minangkabau which previously had a conflict between the tuo and the mudo because of the differences in paradigms between them in understanding and implementing customs and religion. This study aims to determine the process of the entry of Islam and its development until it merged with customs in Minangkabau. This study uses a historical qualitative approach by looking at the social context that occurred in Minangkabau society by looking at library data related to Minangkabau and Islam. The development of Islam in Minangkabau was not as smooth as imagined. Although the Minangkabau people have accepted Islamic teachings as an official religion by looking at the Minangkabau proverb "Adat basandi syarak, syarak basandi kitabullah", there are several customary practices that are not in line with Islamic teachings that give rise to conflict as evidenced by the Paderi War in Minangkabau. In the period after the Padri War, Islamic reformers were born who gave birth to integrity and had a big influence on the Islamic world in Minangkabau, especially in terms of education, which was proven by the birth of many madrasas and made Minangkabau a region that was strong in Islamic teachings, according to sharia.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the practice of uang pannai in Bugis marriage customs and examine the perspective of Islamic law on this local tradition. This research is important because the escalation of the value of the “uang pannai“ has created an economic burden that prevents young couples from marrying, resulting in a shift from the original philosophical meaning of the tradition that emphasizes honor and reward. This phenomenon requires harmonization between local cultural practices and Islamic values in the context of a multicultural society. The research method used is qualitative with a descriptive-analytical approach through literature studies, using primary data from the Quran, hadith, and classical and contemporary fiqh literature, as well as secondary data from relevant books, scientific journals, and previous research. The results of the study show that uang pannai ' has a deep social meaning in the Bugis society as a symbol of honor, an instrument of social status affirmation, and a medium for family unification. From the perspective of Islamic law, this tradition is acceptable as long as it does not conflict with sharia principles, especially when evaluated through the framework of sharia maqasid. The research concludes that the harmonization between the tradition of uang panai' and Islamic values can be achieved through moderation in the determination of amounts, emphasis on symbolic meaning, and integration with dowry, so that cultural heritage is maintained while maintaining conformity with Islamic teachings.

Abstract

This study aims to compare the dynamics of the search for truth experienced by Imam al-Ghazali in his autobiographical work Al-Munqidh min al-Dhalal and the fictional character Sophie in Jostein Gaarder’s novel Sophie's World. The theme of the search for truth is significant as it reflects the intellectual and spiritual struggles of human beings across time and cultures, offering deep reflections on the crisis of meaning often found in modern life. Using a qualitative approach and content analysis method, this research examines the stages both figures undergo—facing skepticism, engaging in critical reflection, and ultimately attaining philosophical and spiritual conviction. Imam al-Ghazali experienced an epistemological crisis that led him to the path of Sufism as a means of achieving certainty, while Sophie embarks on a rational journey through philosophical dialogues toward existential understanding. The findings show that, despite originating from different historical and intellectual traditions, both figures follow a similar pattern in their quest for truth: intellectual unrest, distrust of external authority, pursuit of independent thinking, and the eventual discovery of a personal and transformative form of belief. These findings highlight the importance of dialogue between Eastern spiritual traditions and Western philosophy in understanding the dynamics of truth-seeking in today’s global and contemporary context.
