Abstract

Introduction: Color stability is a crucial aspect in the longevity and aesthetics of dental prosthetics. Understanding how different materials respond to common oral hygiene practices, such as chlorhexidine mouthrinse, is essential for informed clinical decision-making. This research aims to provide valuable knowledge about the potential effects of chlorhexidine gluconate on the color stability of prosthetic resin materials, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of their performance in actual oral care prognoses. Aim: The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of mouthrinse on the color stability of two different laboratory-processed resin composite systems, a resin nanoceramic CAD-CAM material and a 3D printed resin material. Material and Methods: Forty-eight specimens were prepared from two different indirect composite systems (SR Adoro, Ivoclar Vivadent and Tescera ATL, Bisco); a resin nano-ceramic (Lava Ultimate, 3M ESPE) and a 3D printed permanent crown material (Permanent Crown, Formlabs). Surfaces were ground using carbide grinding paper (Grids 600, 800, 1000) followed by a 50µm Al2O3 sandblasting. Then universal polishing paste was applied to the surfaces. The color before and after immersion was measured according to Comission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIED2000) System and ΔL, Δa, Δb, and ΔE values were calculated. All specimens were immersed in the mouthrinse solution for 24h. Changes in colors (ΔE00) was assessed before and after immersion by a digital spectrophotometer (Vita Easyshade, Vita). Data was analyzed with a one-way ANOVA and a Shapiro–Wilk test of normality was performed. Results: After conducting a one-way ANOVA test, it was found that there were no statistically significant difference between the mean values of ΔE00 in the test groups (p=0.105). The chlorhexidine gluconate mouthrinse did not effect the color change of resin materials manufactured by different methods. Conclusion: Within the limitations of the study, the color stability of the tested resin materials in the chlorhexidine gluconate mouthrinse was not affected.

Abstract

Introduction: Based on Indonesia Basic Health Research in 2018, it is known that 47% of Lampung people experience tooth decay and only 51% of them regularly go to the dentist. The need for orthodontic treatment is quite high among students. Epidemiological studies in Japan show that around 40% of teenagers aged 15-18 years need orthodontic treatment, 27%-36% in England aged 10-15 years, while in South Jakarta (2004) is 48.5%. Brook and Shaw introduced the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN), to assess the need for orthodontic treatment in England. IOTN has been applied by Agusni, T to measure the treatment needs of urban and rural children in Surabaya. Objective: Aims to determine the perceptions of elementary school students in Lampung regarding Malocclusion and the need for Orthodontic treatment. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted in May 2023, carried out on students at public Elementary School Bumi Agung who met the inclusion criteria, namely aged 9-13 years, had never and were not currently undergoing orthodontic treatment, and were willing to take part in the research. 130 people were selected using a purposive sampling technique. Questionnaires were used to obtain sociodemographic data and general knowledge about Dental and Oral Health and Malocclusion. Assessment of the need for orthodontic treatment was carried out using the AC IOTN by the subject and operator. Results: 90% of students answered the questionnaire correctly, and 42% of students needed orthodontic treatment. A Pearson Chi-Square analysis test was carried out and found that there was a statistical difference in the perception of the need for orthodontic treatment by students and operators (p-value <0.05). Conclusion: Students at SDN Bumi Agung, Kalianda, Lampung, have very good general knowledge about Dental and Oral Health and Malocclusion. However, this is unsubstantiated by the perception of the need for orthodontic treatment.

Abstract

One of the things that contribute to global warming and environmental damage is medical waste from dental practice. Green Dentistry is an eco-friendly concept of dental practice. Green Dentistry is present as a solution to preserve natural resources, reducing energy use and lessen the waste produced. This study aimed to obtain an overview of knowledge, attitudes, and practice of green dentistry among dentists and dental students. This scoping review uses a literature search on the Google Scholar database guided by PRISMA. The study population was dentists and dental students. Inclusion criteria were observational studies on green dentistry published during 2018 - 2022 in English and Indonesian language. Articles were selected based on tittle, abstract and full text. Extracted data was presented in tables and summarized for an overview of evidence. From 88 articles obtained, 11 articles were included in this review. Each article contains knowledge, attitudes and practice regarding green dentistry, eco-friendly practices in dental clinic, and medical waste management. Each article uses a questionnaire with various number of domains and items. Knowledge, attitudes, and practice of dentists and dental students regarding green dentistry are still not evenly distributed. Postgraduate dentists were found to have better knowledge. Barriers that were often encountered are cost factors and lack of training or information. Knowledge regarding green dentistry concept among dentist and dental students still needs to be improved. Providing information about specific actions related to the concept of green dentistry is necessary.

Abstract

In periodontal surgery, utilizing a conservative approach yields more aesthetically pleasing outcomes while reducing patient morbidity and tissue damage. The development of tools such as electrosurgery and lasers for periodontal treatment has facilitated the implementation of these conservative procedures. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy, outcomes, and postoperative complications of scalpel, electrosurgery, and laser techniques in the periodontal surgery. This article was created by making a research question using the PICO method and searching for articles from PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar from 2019-2023. This study used the PRISMA standard guidelines. Almost all studies in this systematic case review compared the three therapies in treating gingival hyperpigmentation. Only one study discussed the treatment of gingival enlargement using the gingivectomy method. Laser use in periodontal surgery is best compared to electrosurgery or scalpel in effectiveness, quality, outcome, postoperative complications, and wound healing. Dry and bloodless surgical wounds, instant sterilization of the surgical area, reduced bacteremia, mechanical trauma, minimal postoperative swelling and scarring, and minimal postoperative pain point to the effectiveness of using lasers compared to surgery with electrosurgery or scalpel techniques. Laser therapy in periodontal surgery is superior to scalpel and electrosurgery, offering faster treatment, fewer postoperative complications, enhanced wound healing, and higher patient satisfaction. These findings support the adoption of laser techniques for optimal clinical and patient outcomes.

Abstract

Introduction: The success of orthodontic treatment is influenced by a number of factors, including nutrition factor. Orthodontic force application is characterized by remodeling changes in the periodontal tissues leading to the phenomenon of tooth movement. Phytoestrogens are estrogen compounds that can maintain the balance of bone resorption formation and its impact on bone remodeling. Isoflavone, one of the phytoestrogen compounds, can be found in soybeans. Objectives: The aim of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of soy milk (Glycine max (L.) Merill) on tooth movement in orthodontic treatment. Methods: An experimental laboratory post-test with a control group design was used in this research. Twenty four female guinea pigs (Cavia C) were divided into 8 and divided into 3 groups used in this research. Each object was fed with soy-milk flavonoid isolate powder at doses of 3.12 g/kg BW and 6.25 g/kg BW. The data analysis used one-way ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis, then continued with the Mann-Whitney test. Results: The result of the study showed, soy milk with 6.25 g/kg BW and 3.12 g/kg BW doses were effective on the distance guinea pigs' teeth movement who are undergoing orthodontic treatment. Conclusion: The most effective soy milk for the distance of teeth movement in guinea pigs in orthodontic treatment is a dose of 6.25g/kg WB. The soy milk was effective to the number of tooth distance movement with orthodontic treatment.

Abstract

Introduction: Caries is a dental and oral disease characterized by cavities. To assess the severity of caries using an index, namely the DMFT (Decayed Missing Filled Tooth) index. The DMFT index is often used to monitor oral health status in the community. The results of the DMFT Index examination have often been calculated manually using paper and pen, so the time required is longer. Along with the development of technology, a digital dental calculator application was developed as a solution to shorten the duration and increase the accuracy of the DMFT Index calculation results. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of the digital dental survey application on the duration of DMFT index measurement time. Methods: This type of research is a Quasi Experiment with Post-test Only Group Design. The sampling technique used convenience sampling with a total of 64 professional students at Baiturrahmah Dental Hospital who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: The average time for the sample to measure the DMFT index manually was 220.81 seconds while the digital measurement was 30.17 seconds. The Mann Whitney test results showed a significant difference in time duration (p<0.05) between the use of digital dental applications and manual in measuring the DMFT Index. DMFT Index calculation using the application is shorter than the manual calculation. Conclusion: The digital dental calculator application is more effective in shortening the duration of time compared to manual calculations in calculating the DMFT Index results.

Abstract

Introduction – Pendahuluan: Nanohybrid resin composite as a dental restoration material has physical properties (water absorption and color stability) and mechanical properties (hardness). Red betel infusion as a mouthwash, contains tannins and color pigment that will lead to discoloration when accumulated within the resin matrix. Water absorption is one of the supporting factors for color change. The weak acids in red betel lead result breakdown of resin matrix bonds and a decrease in hardness Objective – Tujuan: To analyze the effect on hardness and color change of nanohybrid resin composite after immersion in red betel infusion Methods – Metode: Samples of nanohybrid composite resin were shaped cylindrical with a diameter of 10 mm and a height of 2 mm. The samples were formed using a stainless steel mold. The treatment group was immersed in red betel infusion for 30 minutes with rinsing intervals, followed by immersion in artificial saliva for 23 hours and 30 minutes for 12 and 15 days. Samples in control group were immersed in artificial saliva for 24 hours. The water absorption was measured using analytical balance, the color change was measured using the VITA Easyshade V, and hardness using a Vickers Microhardness Tester. Results – Hasil: One Way ANOVA results for the water absorption (p= 0.268), ΔE (overall color change) (p= 0.000), ΔL (p= 0.444), ΔC (p= 0.001), ΔH (p= 0.012), and hardness (p= 0.000). Post Hoc Tukey results, significant differences in ΔE (overall color change), ΔC, and hardness between days 12 and 15 compared to the control, and ΔH on day 15 compared to the control Conclusion – Kesimpulan: The hardness of the nanohybrid resin composite decreases, and overall color change occurs after immersion in red betel leaf for 12 and 15 days

Abstract

Introduction: Malocclusion is the arrangement of the teeth that is not ideal according to the dental arch. Interceptive orthodontic treatment aims to correct malocclusion during the mixed dentition period. Orthodontic index is a measuring tool to assess the severity of malocclusion, one of the indexes that can be used is Indeks Kebutuhan Perawatan Ortodonti Interseptif oleh Orang Tua (IKPOI-OT) for early detection of malocclusion in children aged 8-11 years during the mixed dentition period that can be used by parents. Objective: To determine whether there is a difference in the measurement results of the need for interceptive orthodontic treatment with IKPO-I by dentists and IKPOI-OT measured by parents at SDN Jelambar Baru 07 so that this index can be used by parents for early detection of maloclussion in children aged 8-11 years (mixed dentition period). Methods: This research is an analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design. The data obtained from the research was subjected to a statistical comparison test using the Mann Whitney test. Results: Total participants were 84 students and parents of SDN Jelambar Baru 07, the results of parent's examination showed that 55 children (65,5%) needed consultation with a dentist or orthodontist, meanwhile, the results of the dentist's examination showed that all of the children needed orthodontic treatment, 42 children (50%) needed interceptive orthodontic treatment and 42 children (50%) requires corrective orthodontic treatment. Conclusion: There is a difference in the measurement results of the need for interceptive orthodontic treatment with IKPO-I by dentists and IKPOI-OT measured by parents. Abstract

Introduction: Orthodontic treatment is the process of adjusting the position of the teeth and jaw to achieve optimal occlusion. Orthodontic treatment is generally performed on children and adolescents, but nowadays more adults are considering orthodontic treatment for aesthetic and dental health reasons. Factors that may influence the uptake of orthodontic treatment are cost, treatment time, gender, age, socioeconomic, knowledge, interest and psychological aspect. Objectives: This study aims to describe self-perception, psychosocial, functional, interest, and knowledge aspects regarding adults’ orthodontic treatment in greater Jakarta areas. Methods: This cross-sectional study was held from October to December 2023. Sample comprised 196 adults who met the following eligibility criteria: (a) aged 35-50 years; (b) living in greater Jakarta; (c) no history of orthodontic treatment; and (d) had income higher than minimum regional wage. Samples were taken by purposive sampling. Demographic data and information were collected by means of a validated questionnaire. The questionnaire is consisted of 31 items concerning self-perception, psychosocial, functional, interest, and knowledge aspects regarding orthodontic treatment. Results: Majority of respondents felt dissatisfied with the arrangement of their teeth (60.2%), felt that they needed orthodontic treatment (71.4%), felt that poor arrangement of teeth was related to decreased social attractiveness (89.3%), and did not had complaints when speaking (80.1%) or jaw joints (51.0%). The level of knowledge about orthodontic treatment was classified as poor (64.3%), and the majority of respondents were interested in undergoing orthodontic treatment (85.7%). Conclusion: Majority of adults aged 35-50 years in greater Jakarta areas are interested to undergo orthodontic treatment as well as having high self-awareness of the purpose of orthodontic treatment. The level of knowledge regarding orthodontic treatment among adults aged 35-50 years in greater Jakarta areas is poor.

Abstract

One way to prevent dental health problems is through Dental Health Education (DHE). Elementary, junior, and senior high school students are ideal participants for DHE, and it is expected that their knowledge will increase after receiving DHE. During the COVID-19 pandemic, DHE has adapted its traditional offline to online method using various educational media. This review aimed to identify the theoretical overview presented in the literature regarding Indonesian school students' knowledge after online DHE. Article searches by Google Scholar database and focusing on students' knowledge after online DHE. Selected articles were screened and structurally read by two persons. In this research, 853 articles identified. Subsequently, articles filtered and presented in a data extraction table with three categories: elementary, junior, and senior high school. There were 30 included articles: elementary school (n=18), junior high school (n=9), and senior high school students (n=3). In each inclusion article, the students' knowledge increased after online DHE, as evidenced by the rise in mean scores from pretest to posttest with significant test (p<0.05), if present. Dental health education media varied by level: elementary school = educational video, junior high school = Zoom Meetings, and senior high school = Instagram. In conclusion, the students' knowledge after online dental health education has increased through various media.
