Abstract

This research proposed a method to produce activated carbon from rice husk by carbonation process, physical activation and chemical activation using NaOH. The performance of activated carbon was tested by batch experiments in which the adsorption system contained 1 g of rice husk activated carbon in 100 mL of artificial wastewater with initial concentration of Cu(II) ion being 148.26 mg/L, initial pH 6, at 27 oC and 1 atm to determine the efficiency of reducing Cu(II) ion over the contact time and presence of stirring on chemical activation. The results showed that the efficiency of reducing Cu(II) ion by rice husk activated carbon increased exponentially with increasing contact time with a maximum value of 74.33% at 90 minutes of contact time. The results also showed that stirring on chemical activation increased the efficiency of Cu(II) ion reduction by 14.94%. Adsorption kinetics studies showed that Cu(II) ion reduction followed the pseudo-second order adsorption equation with the adsorption capacity of 10.18 mg/g and  adsorption rate constant of 0.0013 g/mg.min for rice husk activated carbon without stirring in the chemical activation. Stirring in the chemical activation.increased the capacity and rate of adsorption constant to 12.07 mg/g and 0.0052 g/mg.min, respectively.

Abstract

Industrial progress and waste of urban domestic activities have an impact on the Pb heavy metal pollution on the environment, this will have an impact on human health. Pb metal can be overcome with biological methods by utilizing bacteria in reducing Pb metal. The study aimed to obtain the species  of resistant bacterial isolates of Pb metal and determine its characteristics. Sediment and water samples were obtained from the Tallo River. Isolation and selection of Pb metal resistant bacteria were carried out on nutrient agar media is 10 ppm added of PbAgNO3, afterwards the colonies that grew and differed were characterized by morphological morphology and several biochemical tests. The characterization results obtained 8 isolates of Pb metal resistant bacteria consisted of 8 isolates from sediment samples and 3 isolates from water samples. The characteristics of each bacterial isolate on cell morphology are the same and biochemical tests show different results.

Abstract

The batik home industry of Kampung Laweyan, Surakarta City did not make efforts to prevent environmental pollution from the wastewater produced. Waste water is discharged into the Jenes river, so that the river becomes polluted and contributes to the pollution of the Bengawan Solo River Basin. The study was conducted at the Environmental Laboratory, Environmental Engineering Study Program, Faculty of Engineering, Surakarta Christian University by conducting the coagulation process of flocculation with the jart test. This study uses variations and dosages of the type of FeSO4 and PAC coagulants with levels of 5% each for 100 ml / sec waste discharge. The results of the research are that before the waste is processed by the coagulation process, the value of BOD = 660.28 mg / l and COD = 1600. After the coagulation process, the efficiency of each type of coagulant is with FeSO4, BOD = 85.63% and COD = 82.67 %. With PAC coagulant, BOD = 90.21%, COD = 88.97%. This shows that the ability of PAC to reduce pollutant parameters is greater than ferrous sulfate.

Abstract

Laut Tawar Lake is located in Aceh Tengah District is the largest lake in Aceh Province. The lake, located at an altitude of 1230 meters above sea level, produces about 13 species of freshwater fish. Fish depik (Rasbora tawarensis), eyas (Rasbora sp.), and relo (Rasbora sp.) are endemic species of Laut Tawar Lake. This study aims to estimate the potential of fish production based on the value of morphoedaphic index. The observation was conducted for one year, from October 2016 until September 2017. The measurement of electric conductivity value of lake waters was conducted on 7 (seven) stations selected purposively in the lake area about 5870 hectares. The results showed that morphoedaphic index value of Laut Tawar Lake ranged from 5.10 to 7.84 with an average of 6.14. Potential of fish production in the lake is 33.47 kg/ha/yr with total potential of fish production of 196.49 ton/yr. The value shows a decrease of 10.93 kg/ha/yr over a period of 22 years. This decrease is caused by changes in morphometry parameters and water quality of Laut Tawar Lake.

Abstract

Water is the main component for producing crystal ice cubes, where the water used should fulfill the drinking water criteria that was not allowed to contain Escherichia coli. This research was conducted at the Microbiology Laboratory, AKAFARMA, Banda Aceh. This study aimed to determine the presence of contamination of Escherichia coli bacteria contained in crystal ice cubes. This research used a descriptive method. The results showed that the six samples of crystal ice cubes in the Baiturrahman District restaurant negatively contained Escherichia coli because they did not show colors that match the characteristics of Escherichia coli bacteria.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the management of toxic hazardous materials (THM) in PT. X. The research method uses a comparison technique between the implementation of THM management with the applicable regulations, namely Republic of Indonesia Government Regulation No. 101/2014 concerning management of THM, Minister of Environment Regulation No. 14/2013 concerning the symbol and label of THM, environmental control agency decision No 1/1995 concerning the storage and collection of THM, and environmental control agency decision 2/1995 concerning THM documents. Based on the research PT X has carried out the management of THM in each production unit that produces THM. The types of THM were produced those are ink sludge, WWTP sludge, fly ash, bottom ash, used chemical packaging, ink cans, electronic waste, mercury lamps, toner, filters, and used refrigerants. The characteristics of THM are toxic, corrosive, highly flammable, and infectious. The biggest amount of THM produced in the WWTP sludge. The company has reused WWTP sludge so that it can reduce the amount of sludge produced by 99.83%. The THM management system at PT X follows the work instruction that has been based on applicable regulations. PT X conducts THM management very well.

Abstract

PT. X is a plant in rubber production. Rubber factories in some material handling activities still use material handling manually and depending on the worker, physical requesting from these workers needs to be considered the factors that influence it. The research objective is to study any factors related to the work of employees in the production department of PT. X. The method used in this study is a cross-sectional study that is research carried out or collected simultaneously at the same time, this is done in order to get the good results. The results in this study obtained factors that have an effect on the physical, sex of employee with physical employee with a value of P value = 0,000 and work intensity of employees with physical employees with a value of P value = 0,000.

Abstract

Industrial waste is a factor influencing the pollution of the Krueng Tamiang river. The purpose of this study was to analyze the level of water pollution in the Krueng Tamiang river with the parameters of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Total suspended Solid (TSS) parameters. The results showed the highest BOD parameter test results came from location 2 (Seumadam Bridge) of 3.63 mg / L at stage IV and the lowest BOD value at locations 1 and 6 (Kaloy Village and Alur Manis Bridge) at stage I of 2 mg / L. The highest COD parameter test results came from location 5 (Kota Lintang Bridge) of 21.0 mg / L at stage III and the lowest COD value at location location 1 (Kaloy Village) at stage III, points 1, 3 and 6 (Kaloy Village, Kebon Tengah Suspension Bridge and Alur Manis Bridge) at stage IV of 17.0 mg / L. The highest TSS parameter test results came from location 7 (Peukan Seuruway), namely 295 mg / L phase I in the dry season, and the lowest TSS value at location 1 (Kaloy Village), which was 11 mg / L in stage III during the rainy season.

Abstract

Organic substances in peat water cause smell, have a brown color and taste, in addition to that it can interfere the processing process by forming carcinogenic trihalomethane which is produced from the reaction between organic compounds and chlorine. Peat water used in this study came from the village of Tuah Indrapura, Siak Regency with a concentration of organic matter of 95.2 mg/L. Based on Permenkes No. 492 of 2010 the concentration of organic substances exceeds the quality standard, so it needs to be treated before being used as a source of clean water. Therefore, in this study, uses the coagulation method of flocculation by utilizing natural coagulants, namely tamarind seeds (Tamarindus Indica). The study was conducted using variations in the size of biokoagulan by 200 mesh, 230 mesh, and 270 mesh with a dose variation of 1 gr, 2 gr, 3 gr, 4 gr dan 5 gr. The result showed that using 270 mesh biokoagulan particle size as much as 2 grams can set aside organic matter by 64%. This allowance is not large enough because tannins only form aggregates with organic substances in the form of proteins and alkaloids.

Abstract

Biological-aerobic process is a technology that is often chosen to treat wastewater in industrial areas, especially industries related to food industries. Compared to chemical treatment and advanced treatment, biological treatment is relatively more efficient in the costs required. However, in conventional biological treatment the amount of energy consumption in the process is a major cost component that it becomes one of the challenges in implementing this technology. This paper contains a review of the implementation of the Food Chain Reactor (FCR) technology in treating industrial area wastewater, focusing on an overview of energy consumption compared to conventional biological-aerobic treatment of oxidation ditch (OD). FCR is a wastewater treatment plant (IPAL) that combines Integrated Fixed Film Activated Sludge (IFAS) technology and technology that resembles Constructed Wetland, thus enabling the simultaneous physical, biological and biochemical treatment processes within the reactor. In this case study, the implementation succeeded in showing a reduction in energy consumption by 46.4% while maintaining an efficiency decrease in BOD by 83% and efficiency in decreasing ammonia by 82%. As with the OD process, in this FCR study showed that the denitrification process has not been successful.
