Abstract

This research examines the discrimination traits experienced by three female characters in the Bridgerton series. This research uses the symbolic annihilation concept by Gaye Tuchman and the theory of existentialist feminism by Simone de Beauvoir to describe the discriminatory traits experienced by the three female characters and reveal their resistance efforts to respond to the discrimination. This research uses qualitative descriptive methods to elaborate the findings and the theories. This research finds that women's existence in this series is presented as the party who gets trivialization, omission, and condemnation. Despite being subjected to annihilation traits, the three female characters in this series do not remain silent and accept what has been set by their family and society. Thus, these three female characters take the resistance by staying true to themselves and standing firm in their convictions. The symbolic annihilation they experienced then used as a reference to prove herself that as a woman they can still exist even though being discriminated against by society.

Abstract

This article discusses the meaning of Lombok in contemporary Indonesian novels with a focus on the novel Sanggarguri. The novel discusses the concept of heterodox teachers in Islam. The novel is presented in the context of opposing orthodox Islamic discourse on the concept of ‘guru’. To discover the concept of ‘guru’ in Sanggarguri, this article applies representation theory with a constructionist approach. With that approach, the novel is assumed not to be a presentation about Lombok, but a representation of Lombok. Data were language, both word and paragraph, both in narrative and metaphorical form. Data analysis was performed using semiotic and discourse methods. The results of the analysis show that the novel Sanggarguri conceptualizes Lombok into a traditional discourse by using the names of flowers (kembang) as stages that exist in Sasak Islamic spirituality. The stages from gadung flower to ‘Sanggar Guri teacher’, a wisdom expert teacher, reveal that the concept of a teacher in heterodox Sasak Islam is open to anyone. It belongs to anyone and anywhere. The concept is different from the concept of ‘guru’ in orthodox Islam promoted by ‘tuan guru’, whose knowledge is connected to Haramain. Therefore, only a few people can become ‘tuan guru’. The discourse of ‘guru’ in Sanggarguri is against the discourse of ‘tuan guru’ on the meaning of ‘guru’.

Abstract

The forms and meanings of a 2-year-old lexicon are very interesting. The aesthetics are found in the different meanings of similar lexicon forms. The purpose of this study is to explain the forms and purpose of the lexicon of children at age 2. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The subject of this research is 2-year-old children who live in the Sabilambo Village, Kolaka Regency. The object of this study is the lexicon of these children. The data collection techniques are through direct observations, recordings, notes, and interviews. The data were analyzed using a contextual approach. The context approach is used to explain the different meanings of the same lexicon forms. The results showed that the 2-year-old children during the research expressed 65 lexicons in the forms of nouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, and pronouns. From these lexicon forms, it is found that there are some similar forms that convey different meanings, and consequently, the understanding of a context is needed to be able to explain the meaning.
