Abstract

This study aims to highlight Arab women’s autonomy by elaborating the feminist meaning in the literary code that challenges the patriarchal myth of Adam and Eve in three contemporary Arabic literary works. Through a feminist literary criticism approach, this study reveals the form of deconstruction and criticism of the binary opposition. Hence, Eve (woman) becomes a complete subject who gives birth and not who is born. The narrative-symbolic argument of these works is based on historical-logical-scientific and theological-rationalistic thinking styles. The purpose of the deconstruction in them is to create the autonomy of women with noble dignity as human beings, as men are. The deconstruction reflects the thought of progressive muslim authors who believe in and advocate for the substantive value of the holy Koran, particularly its emphasis on egalitarianism in the myth of Adam and Eve.

Abstract

This article examines the dual representation of the woman-nature connection represented by the author through elements of fantasy and the secondary world in The Girl Who Drank the Moon.  This research uses a descriptive qualitative method and the lens of ecofeminism and fantasy theory to analyze data relevant to the woman-nature connection in the novel. The results show that the author uses three female characters to represent the connection between women and nature, namely Xan (witch), Luna (moon baby), and Madwoman (Adora). The connection between women and nature is depicted through two different sides. On the one hand, women and nature are depicted as loving, caring, and connected entities; but on the other hand, women and nature are depicted as dangerous entities. The use of fantasy elements such as supernatural creatures, magic, and the creation of a secondary world in The Girl Who Drank the Moon plays an important role in providing a new perspective as well as an alternative escape for readers to transcend the boundaries of various injustices against women and nature that have been normalized in the real world.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the impoliteness strategies used by netizens in the comment section of Prabowo Subianto’s inaugural speech as President of the Republic of Indonesia on the BeritaSatu YouTube channel. The background of this research is the growing phenomenon of harsh and impolite comments on social media, particularly in political discourse. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach using Culpeper’s impoliteness theory within a sociopragmatic framework. The data, consisting of public comments, were analyzed to identify types and strategies of impoliteness, such as bald on record impoliteness, sarcasm and mock impoliteness, negative impoliteness, positive impoliteness, off-record impoliteness. The findings show that netizen comments contain specific patterns of impoliteness that reflect socio-political tensions and ideological expressions in digital space. This research contributes to the expansion of sociopragmatic studies and highlights the urgency of linguistic ethics in digital public communication.

Abstract

Yogyakarta, a city with a significant Muslim population, has seen a rise in Muslim product stores that cater to both local and global consumer demands. These stores use diverse linguistic resources to appeal to a broad customer base, reflecting the influence of both local cultural values and global commercial trends. The study investigates how language is employed in naming these stores. This research was conducted to 1) describe the language use in the names of Muslim-product stores, 2) explain the language-use pattern of the store names, and 3) identify the unique syntax of store names. This study adopted a qualitative-descriptive approach, with a survey method. Data was collected by observing Muslim product shops in the city of Yogyakarta and recording shopfronts/façade shop data by recording it with a digital camera on a cellphone. Besides, the data collection was also carried out through digital surveys via Google Map. This was carried out to complement the results of conventional survey and also as a data verification step. In particular, this research will specifically focus on the textual data of shop names. The data will be analyzed interactively to categorize based on the linguistic form, constituent elements and syntactic patterns of the names. Based on the analysis results, it can be concluded 1) four languages are used in the shop name: Indonesian, English, Arabic, Javanese. They are used in mono-, bi-, and multilingual signs, with a predominance of multilingualism, 2) the naming of the stores shows the elements of name, product, quality, and target consumer; generally the name identity is chosen in Arabic, and the product is in English, and 3) structurally, Indonesian shop name phrases employ English rule, giving a deviating pattern, which implies a strong influence of the global language.
