Abstract

In various Arabic literary works, especially the ones, which concern with Qoranic studies, it is argued that the Koran was recited in the dialect of Quraisy. All dialects of the Arabic language were renowned for their eloquence but the dialect of Quraisy was considered the most expressive and articulate, and thus over generations, it came to be known as the dialect of the Koran. Generally the dialects of classical Arabic can be classified into Hijaz, Syria, Iraq, Egypt, and Morocco. The variations on dialects are because of the following factors: first are the extrinsic factors, which consist of social, cultural, geographical, and political factors. Second are the intrinsic factors, which cover phonological, morphological, and syntactical factor. All of those factors have gone in the process of ibdāl, i’rab, binâ’, tashīh, ‘ilāl, itmām, naqs , etc.

Abstract

This research intends to elaborate the types and domains of President Joko Widodo’s speaking politeness strategies in addressing the nation’s socio-political issues. The simplified Brown and Levinson’s (1987) speaking politeness strategies have been employed to achieve the intended purpose of this investigation. The data was collected through listening method and the extra-lingual equivalent method was employed to analyze the data (Sudaryanto, 1993; Mahsun, 2005). Among the eleven speaking politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987), never has President Joko Widodo employed a joke strategy. It might be because the strategy is thought inappropriate with the topic delivered and is considered as a threat for national socio-political stability. The avoid disagreement strategy and the promise-offer strategy are the most often used strategies by President Joko Widodo, sharing 20% of each; followed by the in-group identitiy markers strategy and the intensify interest-seek agreement strategy, sharing 12% of each; the strategy of notice; attend to interest-wants (2%), and the four remaining strategies which counted for 7% each. The speech acts performed by President Joko Widodo contain some politeness strategies with considerable perlucosion power. However, the dominant use of certain strategies is mainly caused by the socio-cultural inferences, which influence the speaker to perform speech acts, rather than the speaker’s awareness and consciousness for selecting those strategies. The knowledge of dominant strategies of speaking politeness practiced by President Joko Widodo can be used as a base for understanding the pattern of the president’s characteristics to deal with the nation’s social and political issues.

Abstract

The objects of this research are the forms of ellipsis and sound substitution, which occur in Arabic. Those are fuṣÊa Arabic which belong to Egyptian and Saudi Arabian dialects. This research will benefit those who learn and teach Arabic as well as the researcher of Arabic language. As a library research, the data was taken from books, journals, and websites. Subtitution and ellipsis may happen for the purpose of making the sound expression easier to be pronounced, e.g qaf  becomes hamzah, jim becomes gain in Egyptian dialect or qaf becomes gain, żal becomes dal in Saudi Arabian dialect. The subtitution and ellipsis also occure with the purpose of simplification as what happens in he removal of ta ta’nis and ta’marbuṭoh.

Abstract

Prophetic literature is, basically, a work of transcendental and mystical spirit because it comes from the deific values. In additions, it tends to change the course of the civilization to a better route because of its messianic spirit. Kuntowijoyo (1943--2005) is one of the prophetic poets with his touch on blending the social themes with historical activism in his works. The balance between social and spiritual world; between deific saturation and problems faced by the society; between the life before and after death, between religious and historical experience are depicted gracefully in his works. The propheticism in Kuntowijoyo works could be traced by using Riffatere’s semiotics.

Abstract

This research aims to find out how gender and narrative correlate to each other. Traditionally speaking, gender is only related to one of the intrinsic aspects, the character, which is usually inside the plot. Although in this short story the narrator is character-bound narrator, the narrator is not in the fabula or plot. The implication is that it can be assumed that gender plays its role. The narrator in this short story obviously gets involved in the contestation of masculinity of the characters. The method of narratology is employed to dig out all of the masculine contestation, among the main characters (Ajo Sidi and Sang Kakek/the Oldman) and the narrator. The result shows that the masculinity of Ajo Sidi belongs to the hegemonic masculinity and the masculinity of the Oldman belongs to the non-hegemonic masculinity. The contestation of masculinity represents the binary opposition between active and passive masculinity. In this respect, the masculinity of the Oldman, which is passive, can be binarized as the feminine rather than masculine one.

Abstract

Contestation of dominant masculinity in Indonesian Popular Culture influenced by the New Order can still be seen in its cinematic production. The legacy of The New Order echoes through themes of state’s violence and masculinity. The Raid: Redemption, as a huge international success, depicting vulgar violence done both by the state and the gangsters is very important to be analyzed. As the form of collective dreams, the contestation of masculinity and violence of the state and the gangster in the movie reflects the real social condition. Through historical perspective the state and the gangster are more like binary opposition; inseparable but opposing each other. The Gangsters became the state’s Frankenstein monster. On one side the state cannot allow the crime the gangsters do, but on the other the state keeps in creating the gangsters to the dirty jobs that state cannot do. Psychoanalytically speaking, their relationship resembles a father and a bad son. Those gangsters are “the son” and the state is “the father”. The effect of the state’s treatment to the gangsters can still be identified long after the down fall of the era that created it.

Abstract

Cultural studies in the development of humanities studies is now in a problematic position, if not the opposite. While cultural studies pivot on the practice of meaning in the context of change, humanities sciences nowadays dwell on the mastery of knowledge and skills. It tends to forget its original purpose as studies that aim to humanize humans. To resolve this problem so that both have creative power, the humanities studies must have the courage to present the studies in three-channel mode, namely political, textual and post-disciplinary. Meanwhile, to preserve its anticipatory power, cultural studies must no longer shy to enter the territory of aesthetics and ethics in its studies.

Abstract

Perempuan Suci (Holy Woman) and Perempuan terluka (Typhoon) are written by Qaishra Shahraz —a Pakistanian female writer. The novels talk about Woman and Freedom. This paper aims to discuss on how Qaishra Shahraz’s view on woman and freedom, how the tradition and culture subordinates woman. With the theory of Foucault about the power and the theory of feminist, this paper observes the character of Qaishra Shahraz, besides her novels. After seeing her view, it is found that Qaishra Shahraz successfully makes the world see the other side of the Pakistanian women. Qaishra Shahraz has never declared herself as feminist.
