Abstract

This study aimed at investigating if there was difference in speaking achievement between students who were taught using role play and those taught using small group discussion. This study used quasi-experimental research design with post-test only control group design. Samples of this study were VII H and VII G. VII H as experimental group and VII G as control group. The samples were taken by random sampling technique. The instrument for collecting data was performance speaking test. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis and inferential analysis. Result showed that mean score of experimental group was 78.53, while mean score of control group was 73.12. Hypothesis testing showed that the value of sig. (2-tailed) was 0.001. Since the value of sig (0.001) < 0.05, the value of tobserved exceeded the value of tcritical value. In conclusion, there was a difference in speaking achievement between the two methods.

Abstract

e-CALF is an acronym for Electronic-Contextual, Attractive, Logic, and Fun - an electronic game developed as a learning medium to facilitate students' reading comprehension. This study aims to determine the effect of e-CALF on the reading comprehension of grade 5 elementary school students at SD Undiksha Lab. This study applies a post-test only control group as a design. The population of this study was the 5th grade students of Undiksha Elementary School. Selected 12 students from class 5A as an experimental group and 12 people from class 5B as a control group. Data were collected using a post-test instrument in the form of multiple choice. From the results of the SPSS analysis, the results showed that the average reading comprehension of the experimental group students was higher than the average reading comprehension of the control group students.

Abstract

This study was aimed at identifying the language functions, analyzing the types of errors in and identifying the sources of errors committed by local guides in DanauTamblingan. This study was a descriptive qualitative research. The subjects of this study were three local guides in DanauTamblingan. The data were collected through observation and interview. Interactive data analysis model was used to analyze the data. The results of this study show that 14 language functions namely advising, thanking, greeting, refusing, self-introduction, offering something, asking information, giving information, explaining something, giving suggestion, giving command, telling prohibition, apologizing, and saying goodbye. There were 4 types of error: omission, addition, misformation and misordering. The total number of errors were 579 which consisted of 365 errors or 63.0% in omission, 103 errors or 19.0% in addition, 93 errors or 15% in misformation and 18 errors or 3.0% in misordering.

Abstract

This research studied about English and Javanese simple sentences which aimed to find the similarities and differences between English simple sentences and Javanese language. This study is descriptive qualitative research that applied contrastive analysis as the methodology. The data were taken from English textbooks and Javanese magazines. The results of this study showed there were similarities and differences in English and Javanese language simple sentences. The similarities were (1) some of simple sentence have similar patterns were SP for verbal sentence and SPO patterns. (2) the major elements were subject and predicator. The differences were (1) Javanese language had SP pattern for nominal, adjectival, prepositional, and numeral sentence. While in English there was no pattern. (2) In English, predicator must be in verb phrase: auxiliary verbs, linking verbs, or action verbs. However, In Javanese language, the predicator of a sentence might be in verb phrase, adjectival phrase, and prepositional phrase.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the forms and functions of speech acts that were found in daily transactional communication between sellers and buyers in Banyuasri traditional market. This research was descriptive qualitative approach since the main focus is about describing and explaining the phenomenon of speech acts that are used by sellers and buyers, the forms and also the functions of speech acts in the daily routines speech at market environment. The subjects of this research were 10 sellers and 10 buyers at Banyuasri traditional market. The data gathered were analyzed by using Miles and Huberman model, namely, collecting data, data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing. The result of the data shows the form of speech act mostly uses by the sellers and buyers at Banyuasri traditional market is representative illocutionary acts.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the discrepancy between the perception and the implementation of the English teachers’ creativity in teaching. This study used mixed method with embedded design in which the qualitative data were more dominant than the quantitative data. This study was conducted in SMA N 2 Bangli. Two English teachers of SMA N Bangli were selected as research subjects. The research instruments used to collect the data namely self-rated questionnaire, classroom observation sheet and in-depth interview. The result of this research shows that there is a discrepancy between the teachers’ perception and their implementation towards creativity in teaching in the learning process. The discrepancy occurred because the degree of motivation, limitation facility, subjective judgement and their creativity in teaching was not optimal yet. Moreover, the teachers also preferred to teach the students directly, deductively and conventionally and rarely to create various creative activities in the learning process.

Abstract

AbstractThis study aimed at analyzing primary teachers’ perception toward pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) and the implementation in teaching English to young learners in Jembrana regency. This study also aimed at analyzing the consistency between teachers’ perception and the implementation and exploring problems that might be encountered by the teachers. There were 3 primary teachers in Jembrana who involved in this study. This study was embedded mixed method design dominant qualitative which used questionnaire, observation sheet, and interview guide in collecting the data. The result showed that there was no consistency between teachers’ perception and their implementation of PCK. Teachers’ perception was very strong but the implementation was very low. The interview result showed that there were several problems faced by the teachers, such as the non-English background teachers do not mastering English, lack of experience in teaching English, difficult to find an appropriate media, and lack of time in teaching.  Keywords: Teachers’ perception, implementation, Pedagogical Content Knowledge

Abstract

Language is a highly elaborated signaling system. The difference in using language between men and women when posting some words in certain social media, namely Facebook, has been researched by the researchers. The researchers choose this social media to collect data for their research because Facebook is one of the biggest social media in the world. This research is entitled English Used by Male and Female Facebook Users in their Post            Based on the aforementioned background of the study, the problem of the research can be formulated as follows: (1) How do female and male Facebook users use lexicon in their posts? (2) How is the basic English sentence structure used by female and male Facebook users in their posts? In this research used some theories such as Language and Society by Hickey, Raymond. (2010) and basic sentence structure by Delahunty, Gerald P., and Garvey, James J. (2010)The method of this research covers data sources, data collection, and data analysis. The data of this research have been taken from Facebook. The method that has been used in collecting data was the method of library research. They were collected by reading the Facebook user’s post, by underlining and note-taking. The analysis was done by a descriptive method, to make the analysis clearer, all of the examples were completed with an explanation.

Abstract

The research is aimed to analyze the maxims violations committed by students of the English study program, Faculty of Foreign Languages, Mahasaraswati Denpasar University. All speakers and interlocutors may not understand well the intent and purpose of utterance. Some utterances may contain different aims and objectives from the statement or question of the other person. To determine the suitability and misunderstanding of speech between listeners and speakers, Grice (1975) has initiated a theory of cooperation principles by classifying them into four types. This research is a qualitative descriptive study by collecting data by observation, note taking and recording. The result of this research is violations of maxims have occurred in students' speech. The four violations of maxims were found here. Students violate the maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relevance and maxim of method. The most dominant violation of maxims is a violation of the maxims of quantity.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze parental involvement in developing students’ literacy development in Sekolah Dasar Negeri 1 Banjar. The purpose of this study was to analyze how can parents support child’s literacy development and to identify the barriers to parental involvement. The subject of this study was the parents who had a low-educational attainment. This study was a descriptive qualitative. The data were collected by using two instruments namely questionnaire and interview guide. The instrument validity condcuted by expert judgement. The data obtained were descriptively analyzed. The findings of this study show that parents commonly did 16 activities in developing students’ literacy development. Moreover, Mother  commonly accompanied their children in the reading activity at home. Parents usually use balinese language Furthermore, there were 13 barriers faced by the parents involvement.
