Abstract

This research employs a pragmatic approach to analyze speech acts in the Eighth Grade by Bo Burnham. The primary objective is to identify the types of illocutionary acts used by the main character that reflect anxiety, as well as to determine the most dominant type of illocutionary act found in the film. The method used is observation, with data collection procedures involving: (1) downloading the film and its transcript, (2) watching the film while verifying the accuracy of the transcript against the spoken dialogue, (3) noting relevant utterances, and (4) classifying the speech acts based on the illocutionary act frameworks proposed by John Searle (1979) and George Yule (1996). The analysis is conducted descriptively to categorize the types of illocutionary acts and to identify which type is most frequently employed by the main character. The findings indicate a total of 56 speech acts in the film, consisting of 17 representative acts, 5 commissive acts, 10 directive acts, 1 declarative act, and 23 expressive acts. Among these, expressive acts are the most dominant, accounting for 23 utterances or 41.06% of the overall data.

Politeness theory to identify and classify the strategies used by Judge Frank Caprio and the defendants during interactions in the courtroom. Data were collected using purposive sampling from 20 of the most popular videos with over 5 million views, which contained expressions of rejection and praise. The method used was qualitative descriptive analysis to examine linguistic features, social context, and actions that threaten or preserve face. Face-threatening activities (FTAs) and face-saving actions (FSAs) in conversations were analyzed. The results of the research indicate that positive politeness and negative politeness strategies are often used to maintain mutual respect and minimize potential conflicts. In cases of rejection, Judge Frank Caprio tends to use indirect language, softened language, and empathy to protect the negative face of the defendants. Meanwhile, in situations involving praise, positive politeness strategies, such as giving praise, humor, and expressions of solidarity, are more dominant. This research shows that interactions in the Caught In Providence courtroom combine legal authority with interpersonal harmony and reflect a high awareness of social relationships and public perspectives.

Abstract

This research  examines the struggle of the character Mathilde in asserting her right to speak and the forms of resistance she shows against the patriarchal structure within her husband's family in Morocco. The research also highlights Mathilde’s independent attitude, demonstrated through her refusal to submit to her husband's authority and her ability to make her own decisions. This research uses a qualitative approach with content analysis as the method, in which the researcher analyzes written sources such as novels, articles, and relevant books. The main focus of this study is to identify and classify the forms of Mathilde’s resistance against patriarchy, as well as actions that reflect her independence. The analysis reveals 9 data points representing Mathilde’s resistance to patriarchal structures and 7 data points showing her independent behavior in the novel In the Country of Others by Leïla Slimani. This study applies feminist theories by Tong (2014) and Djajanegara (2000) as the theoretical foundation to identify and explain the issues being analyzed. Data were obtained from written sources such as books, articles, and literary texts, and then analyzed to explore gender dynamics and women’s struggles within the context of patriarchal and colonial cultures. This research contributes to the understanding of how female representation in postcolonial literature reflects complex social realities, and opens up discussion about the importance of women’s voices and independence in facing oppressive systems.

Abstract

The ability to write scientific papers is an important competency that students must possess. However, teaching scientific writing in universities still faces various obstacles, such as students' poor ability to develop ideas, understand the structure of scientific papers, and apply theory to writing practice. This study aims to analyze the need to develop a Team-Based Project–Flipped Classroom (TBP-FC) model for teaching scientific writing in universities. The study used the Research and Development (R&D) method with the ADDIE model in the needs analysis stage. The study subjects consisted of 30 students and lecturers teaching Indonesian Language at Putra Indonesia University (YPTK) Padang. Data were collected through questionnaires and interviews. The results indicate that students require a learning model that is interactive, flexible, can be studied independently, and can help them understand the scientific writing process more effectively. Furthermore, lecturers also require a learning model that can increase student engagement in the learning process. The findings also reveal that existing learning methods are still predominantly teacher-centered and have not fully facilitated collaborative learning, critical thinking, and independent learning skills. Students expressed a strong need for learning materials that are accessible anytime and anywhere and support project-based activities. Based on the needs analysis, the Team-Based Project–Flipped Classroom model is deemed relevant for development as a solution for teaching scientific writing in universities.
