Abstract

This research explores the themes of discrimination and tolerance in The Witcher series by Andrzej Sapkowski. Employing postcolonial theories by Edward Said, Homi K. Bhabha, and Gayatri Spivak, the study analyzes how fantasy narratives reflect social realities regarding injustice and diversity. The novel presents a fictional world marked by racial tensions among humans, elves, dwarves, and other magical beings. Through character interactions and the social structures depicted in the story, readers are presented with portrayals of marginalization, stereotyping, and systems of oppression. At the same time, the novel also includes moments of tolerance that suggest the possibility of coexistence and mutual understanding. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method with a library research approach. The findings reveal that The Witcher serves not only as a reflection of social inequality but also as a critique of dominant power structures and an exploration of efforts to build tolerance within a divided society.

Abstract

This research investigates the implicit meanings found in the lyrics of Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic album. It examines the artist’s use of figurative language and cultural references to deliver underlying themes associated with lifestyle, self-confidence, affection, and identity. The objectives of this research are to identify the implied meanings in the song lyrics, to analyze how themes such as lifestyle, affection, and cultural identity are implicitly represented, and to examine the elements that contribute to the construction of these meanings within the lyrics. This research focuses on how the artist uses figurative language and cultural references to convey hidden themes related to lifestyle, self confidence, affection, and identity. The research adopts a qualitative descriptive approach, utilizing semantic analysis and contextual interpretation to examine the lyrical content of each track. Data were obtained through a documentation method, drawing from credible and official lyric sources. The results indicate that symbols of wealth such as gold, luxury clothing, and festive imagery function not just as material representations but as metaphors for personal empowerment and self representation. Moreover, expressions of love and admiration are conveyed through poetic devices, adding depth to the album's artistic expression. This research offers insight into the intersection of music, literature, and culture, demonstrating how popular music especially in the R&B and funk genres can reflect complex personal and social themes. The research uncovering the hidden messages within the album’s lyrics, the research promotes a richer understanding of how mainstream artists like Bruno Mars embed layered meanings in their musical works

Abstract

This study explores the psychological impact of isolation and alienation as experienced by the protagonist, Kya Clark, in Delia Owens’ Where the Crawdads Sing. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, this research applies Erik Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development and the literary concepts outlined in Akhmedov’s Introduction to Literary Theory (2020). The analysis reveals how Kya’s prolonged isolation profoundly influences her identity formation, emotional resilience, and ability to establish trust and intimacy. By examining Kya’s journey through Erikson’s psychosocial stages—especially Trust vs. Mistrust, Identity vs. Role Confusion, and Intimacy vs. Isolation—this study identifies the psychological struggles and eventual growth of a girl forced into solitude by abandonment and social prejudice. The findings show that isolation, while a source of deep psychological trauma, also becomes a catalyst for Kya’s self-reliance, creativity, and emotional maturity. Nature functions as her symbolic mother and therapeutic space, providing the security and acceptance denied by human society. Owens’ novel illustrates how alienation can produce both emotional fragility and inner strength, showing the resilience of the human spirit amid social rejection and personal loss.

Abstract

This study examines the illocutionary acts embedded in the police interrogation transcript (Berita Acara Pemeriksaan/BAP) of WD, the suspect in the murder of EN in Muara Bungo. Using Searle’s taxonomy of speech acts, the research identifies assertives, directives, expressives, and commissives as the dominant forms shaping the interaction between the interrogator and the suspect. The analysis reveals that the interrogator consistently relies on high-pressure directives that control narrative flow, restrict the suspect’s discursive freedom, and guide the production of legally relevant information. In contrast, the suspect’s responses exhibit a pattern of assertive confessions, mitigation strategies through reported speech, emotional expressions, and moral positioning. These linguistic choices not only construct his version of events but also function as strategic attempts to negotiate responsibility and reshape the legal interpretation of his actions. The findings indicate that BAP statements are not neutral reflections of spoken interaction but structured linguistic events influenced by institutional power, psychological dynamics, and communicative strategies. This study highlights the importance of forensic linguistic analysis in evaluating the credibility, voluntariness, and evidentiary value of interrogation transcripts in Indonesian legal settings. It also contributes to understanding how language functions as both evidence and a tool for shaping legal realities.

Abstract

Speaking proficiency remains one of the most challenging components of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning at the university level. This study investigates the linguistic, psychological, and environmental factors contributing to speaking difficulties among university EFL students. Using a mixed-methods descriptive design, data were collected through questionnaires, speaking performance assessments, interviews, and classroom observations. Quantitative findings show that linguistic limitations—particularly restricted vocabulary (M = 4.21), inaccurate pronunciation (M = 4.07), and grammatical inaccuracies (M = 3.98)—constitute the most dominant challenges. Psychological factors also play a significant role, with high speaking anxiety (M = 4.15) and fear of negative evaluation negatively correlating with performance (r = –0.63). Environmental and pedagogical conditions further intensify these difficulties, as large class sizes, limited speaking opportunities, and teacher-centered instruction reduce authentic oral interaction. Qualitative data support these findings by revealing recurrent anxiety, limited spontaneous speech, and restricted classroom engagement. The results highlight that speaking difficulties arise from the interplay of linguistic weaknesses, affective constraints, and contextual barriers. The study recommends integrated pedagogical approaches that strengthen linguistic competence, reduce anxiety, and provide more opportunities for meaningful communication to support students’ oral proficiency development.

Abstract

This research aims to explore in depth the use of signs in the Naruto film through a semiotic perspective. The researcher used a qualitative research method with a descriptive approach, which allows for in depth analysis of the meaning contained in each visual and verbal element. Data were obtained from various key scenes, dialogues between characters, and visual elements that are significantly relevant to the storyline. Through systematic data collection, this study focuses on how these signs are used to shape the narrative and convey specific messages in the Naruto film. The analysis process was conducted with reference to the semiotic theory of Charles Sanders Peirce and Roland Barthes. Peirce's theory is used to identify signs in the form of icons, indexes, and symbols, while Barthes' theory is used to interpret the meaning of signs through three levels, namely denotation, connotation, and myth. The results of the study revealed that the signs found not only have basic meanings according to the context of the story, but also contain cultural and moral messages. These layered meanings play an important role in enriching the story, building an emotional atmosphere, and conveying cultural values to the audience. Thus, this research confirms that semiotic studies are an effective approach to understanding the multimodal communication that occurs in Naruto, especially in relation to the delivery of moral messages and cultural values.
