Abstract

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is sudden damage to the brain caused by a jolt or blow to the head. The common causes of TBI are due to falls, sports injuries, and car or motorcycle crashes. TBI can be classified into several types, ranges from a mild concussion to severe permanent brain damage. Nevertheless, the impacts of TBI are quite devastating not only to the patient but also on the family. It may last for several years, hence the affected patient definitely requires ongoing care which is normally provided by informal caregivers, such as spouses, parents, or other family members. In addition, TBI can cause drastic changes to the life of the family members. The caregiver’s stresses including psychological problems, family burdens, changes in behavior and changes in social roles will be discussed critically in this article. Based on the literature, many caregivers lack good coping strategies in dealing with their stress. More well-designed interventions is an absolute necessity among TBI family caregivers to lessen the stress and improve their social well-being and functioning.

PERKASA Intervention has also been shown that it can be consistently used for targeted groups. The main challenge seen was the recruitment of participants during Covid-19 pandemic occurring all over the world. The data from this pilot study can be used as a reference for larger-scale studies in the future. This intervention was fully conducted by professionals from Medical Social Worker as therapists and the first to be implemented in Malaysia.

Abstract

Data and facts from the media show that the problem of children who conflict with the law is still a daily consumption. This phenomenon of child problems requires serious attention and handling from various parties. The impact of the behavior of children in conflict with the law is not only on the victim but also on the perpetrator himself, the family, and society in general. This article is directed to answer the question of how the risk, protector, and implications for child prevention efforts conflict with the law. This study is based on the study of literature from the perspective of social construction which views that conflict with the law as the reality of the interaction of the individual child and his environment. Social construction recognizes that psychological and sociological aspects work together in combination and this helps create and shape individual realities. The everyday reality experienced by the individual is a reality that affects the response of his/her attitudes and behavior. Individual behavior is a picture of the behavior of people who interact with them. Children generally grow up in four contexts where they interact with others for a long time, namely family, school, peers, and community environments. The four environmental contexts are not only risk factors but become protective factors for the occurrence of child behavior in conflict with the law. References to this paper are sourced from books, journals, and other reliable sources and have an element of novelty both from within Indonesia and from abroad. This paper is intended to be a concern and awareness for various parties so that finally the prevention efforts carried out have the maximum impact and cases of children who conflict with the law are not repeated.

Abstract

The aging group in society faces challenging situations in most countries. This paper discusses comparing the aging challenge and pension policy to overcome the problems. As one of the most aging population countries globally, South Korea has become a good representative to learn about the aging context. Meanwhile, Indonesia as a populous country with a gradually growing aging population from year to year. The article analyses that even though South Korea and Indonesia have a similar threat for aging population growth, these two countries face different situations. South Korea faces a low fertility threat, and Indonesia faces poverty in the aging population. Therefore, pension policy as social security and protection are discussed through the state and corporate pillars in implementing the pension scheme. However, the pension policy implementation in South Korea should be supported by strengthening social networks to enhance the elderly group. Meanwhile, in Indonesia, there is a need to increase people's awareness in participating in the pension plan to enhance life quality in the old ages.

Abstract

The present study aimed to assess occupational stress, burnout, coping strategies adopted by female teachers to address occupational stress, and the moderating effect of social support. The study adopted quantitative cross-sectional design. The sample was collected from 1,386 teachers at 86 private schools. The data was analysed using SPSS 22.0. The stepwise multiple regression, linear regression, Pearson correlation, and two-way ANOVA were used, and a p-value of 0.05 was significant. The study evaluated the moderating variable social support effect and found a significant correlation between social support, burnout, and coping strategies (p = 0.01). The results of the study revealed that teachers were found to use dysfunctional and emotional coping strategies most often; however, the coping strategies were significantly correlated with burnout (p = 0.003). Based on the results, the higher level of occupational stress and a moderate level of burnout were validated. Teachers are physically tired, and they have more to do at work than they can do in the time they have or with the skills they have. The study concluded that there is a dire need to promote a healthy working environment for better teacher performance.

Abstract

Poverty in Widodomartani is still classified as high poverty for about 9 % of its villagers. Central, local, and the village-level government tried to solve this issue. In 2013, Widodomartani Village received some programs to control the poverty from Indonesia Ministry of Social Affair launching the Kelompok Usaha Bersama Fakir Miskin (KUBE FM) program. The implementation of the KUBE FM Program needs assistance from all parties, thus it can be going well. Widodomatani Village-head (Lurah) is one of the policymakers who can assist the KUBE FM Program. The village head has some authority to run the program, one of which is society’s empowerment. Hence, the village head’s assistance in KUBE FM Program could help reduce and/or remove poverty in Widodomartani.

Abstract

This paper talks about the issues surrounding the implementation of the Social Amelioration Program (SAP) by the Philippine government and how the social workers are caught between looking after themselves in this pandemic, being vigilant against criticisms, and making credible decisions on the eligibility of people who are going to avail SAP. In critically analyzing the issues and power relations, the paper presents two ideas: (a) analyzing the perspectives of the government and citizens on deciding who are eligible beneficiaries of the program using the deservingness theory which best describes the perspectives in play in the decision making and how these perspectives create tension in the implementation of the program; and (b) analyzing the power perspectives of the social worker, using Michel Foucault’s ideas of power, which help social worker maintain professionalism, remain optimistic about their profession, make sound judgments amidst all the noises of the bureaucracy, public doubts, criticism and possibly burn out.

Abstract

The system theory has a significant impact on social workers since the 1970s. It advocates that the whole system, or a family, is made of different individuals. In this regard, the interest of the ‘family’ or the group is greater than the interest of individual members. The system function as each part interacts (communicates) with each other. This article discusses the application of an intervention-based system theory in the practice of social work. Furthermore, it presents a case illustration of an actual case to understand the application of system theory in the practice of social work. The case illustration details the clients’ issues and how the fundamental basic systems in the system theory, specifically, the client system, change agent system, target system and action system could be applied in social work practice. The actual case illustration study has facilitated a system theory analysis of the people, the environments, and changes that are related to the clients’ wellbeing to find the most effective intervention targets and strategies. In this regard, system theories bring the environment back into the concept of people in the environment. It can be concluded that system theory is an important tool to guide professionals across all levels of social work practice.
