Abstract

Background: Formula milk is often blamed as the primary cause of exclusive breastfeeding substitution. However, breastfeeding substitution occurs within the broader context of social systems with various dimensions. These variations are complex, and each social system has its unique construction, necessitating a qualitative approach. Objectives: This study aims to uncover the social dimensions, especially the relationship between daughter-in-law and mother-in-law, as an underlying breastfeeding substitution in the rural areas of the Nias Islands. Methods: The study used in-depth interviews and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs). Informants included mothers with children under two years of age, mothers-in-law, midwives, and community leaders. The analysis was conducted thematically. Results: The study revealed that the pressure to work and contribute to the family economy is a gateway to breastfeeding substitution. However, the key factor is the prevailing norms in the local community. The societal expectation that women must work hard and be responsible for the family's needs leaves no choice for mothers but to leave their children. Mothers-in-law play a significant role in this social system. Conclusions: This study highlights that women choose to conform to the ideal image of a praiseworthy daughter-in-law devoted to the family, thereby neglecting the need to breastfeed their children exclusively. Localized intervention designs must consider such social situations.

Abstract

Background: More than 20% of toddlers in Indonesia suffer from stunting. Childhood stunting can impact cognitive function and productivity in adulthood. Stunted toddlers have the opportunity to improve their nutritional status and cognitive functions through catch-up growth. Objectives: To determine the success of catch-up growth in stunted toddlers, and the association of catch-up growth and education history with cognitive function in school-age and adolescence. Methods: This retrospective cohort study used Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS) data. This study included 623 stunted toddlers aged 24–59 months, who were followed up at ages 8–11 years and 16–18 years. Catch-up growth was measured using height-age differences, and cognitive function was assessed using Raven’s Progressive Matrices. The data were statistically analyzed using multiple linear regression. Results: A total of 231 (37.1%) and 316 (50.7%) stunted children succeeded in catching up at the age of 8–11 and 16–18 years, respectively. About 67.7% of children demonstrated good cognitive function at 8-11 years and 72,2% at 16-18 years. Catch-up growth and height-for-age z-score were significantly associated with cognitive ability in both age groups (p-value<0.05). Key factors influencing cognitive function included kindergarten attendance, parental education, economic status, infectious disease, and family size. Conclusions: Stunted toddlers can still pursue catch-up growth, associated with better cognitive function at school age and adolescence, alongside educational history. Appropriate interventions are needed to support stunted toddlers in achieving catch-up growth and improving their cognitive functions during school age and adolescence.

Abstract

Background: Breastfeeding is universally recognized as the gold standard for infant nutrition, playing a crucial role in preventing Iron Deficiency Anaemia (IDA) which could affect the growth and development of newborns. Objectives: This review discusses how breastfeeding could help prevent iron deficiency early in life and may provide long-term benefits in reducing the incidence of anaemia. Methods: The research was designed as a literature review, examining several articles from three online databases: Google Scholar, PubMed, and ScienceDirect. Discussions: Breastfeeding provides essential nutrients, and breast milk helps lower the occasion of IDA in infants. Although the iron content in breast milk is low, it is easily absorbed due to a component called lactoferrin. Vitamin C in breast milk also helps most effectively to increase iron absorption. Providing iron-rich complementary foods can help meet the daily iron needs of infants and children. The percentage of mothers who do not practice exclusive breastfeeding remains high (69.3%). This is attributed to various factors, including awareness of breastfeeding's importance, economic challenges, and lack of support for exclusive breastfeeding. Conclusions: Exclusive breastfeeding may provide enough iron for infants for the first four to six months to avoid IDA. However, to keep preventing IDA after six months of age, supplemental foods that include iron are paramount. Support from various parties is essential to promoting and increasing exclusive breastfeeding. Further studies to explore the breastfeeding and IDA are essential for worldwide IDA prevention.

Abstract

Background: Mindful eating is correlated with the adoption of healthier dietary habits and improved psychological well-being. However, stress-induced eating behaviour amongst undergraduates can lead to overconsumption of food and an elevated body mass index (BMI), increasing susceptibility to non-communicable diseases. Objectives: This study aimed to explore mindful eating practices amongst undergraduates, focusing on gender differences and their relation with stress and BMI. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted amongst 558 undergraduates in International Islamic University Malaysia, Kuantan campus (n=279 males, n=279 females) aged from 18 years to 25 years. Participants completed a sociodemographic questionnaire, mindful eating questionnaire (MEQ) and perceived stress scale (PSS-10). Data were analysed using SPSS Version 27.0 for descriptive analysis, independent t-test, and correlation analysis, with statistical significance set at p-value<0.05. Results: The mean MEQ summary score was 2.73±0.27, with 81.9% participants reporting moderate stress levels. No significant difference in MEQ scores was observed between males and females (p-value=0.283). However, females had significantly higher stress scores (p-value=0.028). MEQ scores showed a weak but significant negative correlation with stress levels (r=−0.133, p-value=0.002) and BMI (r=−0.112, p-value=0.008). Conclusions: Mindful eating is prevalent in this study population, although no significant difference was identified between genders. females exhibited higher levels of stress as compared to males. Mindful eating demonstrates a significant inverse association with both stress and BMI, underscoring its potential benefits for overall well-being. Future research is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of mindful eating interventions in reducing stress and managing weight; incorporating assessments of dietary intake and academic performance.

Abstract

Background: The absence of a comprehensive assessment of stunting risk factors in Pacitan Regency, Indonesia, despite the high prevalence of stunting at 20.6%, is crucial for this research. Objectives: The study sought to examine risk factors associated with stunting, grouped by the child's characteristics, the mother's pregnancy and birth history, the parents' and family's attributes, and health-related habits. Methods: Between August and September 2023, a case-control study was conducted at the Arjosari Community Health Centre in Pacitan Regency. The sample comprised children aged 6–59 months, chosen via purposive sampling. The research comprised 29 children with stunting as cases and 58 children without stunting as controls, matched by age, gender, and neighbourhood. Data were collected using pre-established survey questionnaires. Chi-square tests and multiple logistic regression analyses determined factors significantly linked to stunting (p-value<0.05). Results: Low birth weight was the most significant factor connected with stunting (p-value<0.001; OR=6.70; 95% CI: 2.42-18.59). The odds of stunting were 6.7 times higher for children with a history of LBW than those with normal birth weight. First births were also significantly associated with stunting and were a protective factor (p-value=0.045; OR=0.38; 95% CI: 0.15–0.99). Conclusions: Children of primiparous mothers have 62% lower odds of stunting than those of multiparous mothers. No significant association was found between the other examined factors and stunting risk.

Abstract

Background: Food and drug labels are crucial for ensuring the safety and well-being of individuals, particularly for those with allergies or specific health conditions. In Turkey, these labels are exclusively written in Turkish, which may pose challenges for non-Turkish speakers. Objectives: This study explores the impact of the Turkish-only labeling system on food and medication accessibility for non-Turkish speakers and its broader implications. Methods: A questionnaire-based study was conducted targeting non-Turkish-speaking individuals, including foreign residents and tourists. The survey assessed their experiences and challenges when purchasing food and medication with Turkish-only labels. Results: The study showed that 58.8% of participants encountered difficulties understanding the terminology on food and medication labels. Consequently, 80.2% chose to bring their own food and medications from their home countries, and many preferred shopping at stores where staff could speak their native language or a language they understood. Furthermore, 32.3% of tourists indicated that the lack of a second language on labels would influence their decision to revisit Turkey. Conclusions: The findings highlight the significant barriers posed by the Turkish-only labels. Introducing a secondary language on food and medication labels could significantly enhance accessibility for non-Turkish speakers. This modification would not only improve the experience of foreigners but could also positively affect their perceptions and encourage revisits, benefiting the local economy.

Abstract

Background: Appetite changes during the menstrual cycle may be influenced by hormonal and metabolic fluctuations, potentially differing between women with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Objectives: To examine the association between appetite fluctuations throughout the menstrual cycle and T2DM risk in reproductive-aged women. Methods: This case-control study included reproductive-aged women divided into T2DM and non-diabetic groups. Appetite changes were assessed across different menstrual phases (pre-menstrual, menstrual, and follicular), while dietary intake was analyzed using the Semi Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ). Statistical analysis was performed using logistic regression test and independent t-test. Results: During the premenstrual phase, women with T2DM experienced more increased appetite compared to the non-diabetic group (OR=1.53; 95% CI: 0.808–11.842; p-value=0.099). During the menstrual phase, increased appetite was more common in the non-diabetic group, while the diabetic group showed a more stable appetite response (OR=0.15; 95% CI: 0.028–0.772; p-value=0.029). In addition, women with T2DM had higher energy, protein, and fat intake compared to the non-diabetic group. Conclusions: Appetite regulation throughout the menstrual cycle differs between women with and without T2DM, suggesting potential metabolic dysregulation in diabetic individuals. Differences in dietary intake may also contribute to metabolic risk. Further research is needed to explore these relationships and develop appropriate nutritional interventions for women at risk of T2DM.

Abstract

Background: The first 1,000 days of life are a crucial period for supporting a child’s growth and development. Few studies have examined how food beliefs and taboos differ during this period based on the child’s nutritional status and cultural background. Objectives: This study aims to identify and compare food beliefs and taboos among mothers from four major ethnic groups in East Java (Madura, Arek, Mataraman, and Pendalungan), considering the nutritional status of their children (normal versus stunting) during pregnancy, lactation, and complementary feeding. Methods: A qualitative study was conducted using in-depth interviews with 144 mothers of children aged 6-23 months. Respondents were purposively selected based on children’s nutritional status (normal or stunted). Results: During pregnancy, most mothers across various ethnicities avoid “hot” foods, raw foods, sweet foods, and local ingredients such as kluwak, believing these foods can affect fetal health. During lactation, mothers of children with normal nutritional status generally avoid spicy foods, while mothers of stunted children avoid seafood, eggs, and herbal medicine. They believe these foods affect breast milk production. During complementary feeding, mothers of normal children avoid spicy foods and coconut milk, while mothers of stunted children also avoid ‘tape’ and Monosodium Glutamate (MSG), which are believed to cause digestive disorders. Conclusions: These findings highlight the importance of developing nutritional interventions that integrate local cultural practices. This program has the potential to improve stunting prevention programs and enhance maternal and child nutrition.
