Abstract

This research was aimed to know the appropriate assessment, find out speaking’s authentic assessment material and find out the characteristics of authentic speaking assessment model for Mechanical Engineering of Vocational School. The type of research was Research and Development. This study was conducted in Mechanical Engineering subject at SMKN 2 Bengkulu City. The sample was taken from third class of Mechanical Engineering students. The data was collected by using questionnaire. The result of the study showed  that; first, the appropriate assessment for Mechanical Engineering students Section of Vocational School in SMK N 2 of Bengkulu city was Authentic Assessment. Second,  the researcher found 4 kinds of speaking’s authentic assessment for Mechanical Engineering. It can be clasified into role play, presentation, picture cued and debate. Third, the characteristics of authentic speaking assessment model for students and teachers of Mechanical Engineering at SMKN 2 of Bengkulu city were topic of assessment, social function  format, type of authentic assessment, instrument of authentic assessment, types of rating scale/rubric and times

Abstract

The objective of the research was to determine how the Think-Pair-Square-Share (TPSS) Strategy can improve the frequency, duration and accuracy speaking students. The subject wasthe second year of Language class, consists of 19 students. The quantitative and qualitative data were applied to see the improvement of students’ speaking ability and improvement of learning situations for the strategy applied. The instruments used to gather the data werea students’ speaking ability test and observation sheet. Based on the results of the test conducted at the end of the study and analysis of observation sheets, it could be said that the speech and behavior of students during the learning process had increased. The students' speaking frequency, duration and accuracy orderly increasedfrom 31%, 47%, and 37% at baseline to 79%, 84% and 79% at the end of the study. Results showed that the number of students at the end of the research had achieved success indicator. The students also showed motivation, interest, participation, and enthusiasm better for the learning process.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to know the differences in students score and also to know whether the student’s interest was improved or not, after did a treatment using short story and handbook. The instrument of this research was questionnaire. The result from short story was satisfactory. The mean score from pre-test was 45.1 for experimental class and 45.25 for control class. The difference both of class was 0.15 point. The result of post-test was 55.9 for the experimental class, and 51.8 for the control class. The difference in both classes was 4.1. It can be concluded that the experiment was success. The explanation above showed that the differences in improving students’ score and interest by giving the treatment, and the differences score between two classes are significant. It means that reading activity by using short story could improve students reading comprehension in class I of SMPN 2 Kota Bengkulu.

Abstract

This study investigates the interaction pattern in SMAN 1 Curup Kota, based on Coulthard theory (2002). This study analyzed the interaction pattern and type of act used by teacher and students to see the ideal pattern in the classroom. The data analysis shows that (a) the dominant pattern used in the classroom is complete pattern (IRF) and there are also semi-complete pattern (IR) and incomplete pattern (IF); (b) In the type of acts section, the elicitation is the highest followed by informative and starter in the initiation move,  reply as the highest act in the response move, and in the follow up accept as the highest followed by comment. It can be concluded that interaction pattern in the classroom is dominantly occured is ideal pattern but it’s not good interaction pattern because delimit student opportunity in the classroom

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of picture card games technique toward students’ vocabulary mastery. The participant was all the fifth year students of SD N 99 Kota Bengkulu that consisted of 68 students, the students divided into two classes, namely class VA and VB. The sample were the two classes which 34 students in each class. The students were divided into two groups, the experimental and the control groups. The experimental group received treatment by using card games techniques, while the control group was taught by using conventional technique. The pre-test was given to the two groups before giving the treatment. It found that there was no significant between the two groups in vocabulary mastery before giving the treatment. However, after giving the treatment, post-test was given and it found that there was a significant difference between the two groups. It can be concluded that card games technique gave positive effect toward the students’ English vocabulary mastery of SD N 99 Kota Bengkulu.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out whether the use of Mnemonic technique affected the students’ vocabulary mastery. This study employed a quasi experimental design. The subject of this study comprised 64 students of grade XII science class of SMAN 9 Kota Bengkulu. The instrument of this study was a vocabulary test. The experiment class was taught by Mnemonic technique, while the control class by contextual learning. In the pre test there was no significant difference in mastery between the experiment class (mean=71,18) and control class (mean=68) with t count (0,1)< t table (df=62 sig 0,05). After the use of Mnemonic technique, in the post test, there was a significant difference in mastery between the experiment class (mean=73,51) and control class (mean=67,53), with tcount (1,99) > t table  (1,67), (df=62; sig. 0,05). It can be concuded that the use of Mnemonic technique was effective toward the students’ vocabulary mastery at grade XII-Science Students of SMAN 9 Kota Bengkulu.

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to identify the perception toward schema theory that used in reading class on the fifth semester students of English Education Study Program of FKIP UNIB in academic year 2010/2011. The population of this research was the fifth semester students of English Education Program of FKIP UNIB in academic year 2010/2011. The population of this study was the whole fifth semester students of English Study Program of Bengkulu University for academic year 2010 – 2011 which consist of 38 students. The sample of this study used total sampling technique. This study was a descriptive study. The instrument of this study was questionnaire. The questionnaire consists of 25 items that purpose to measure students’ perception toward schema theory. The result of this research show that the schema theory  had  86,50%  positive  perception,  12,30%  neutral  perception  and  1,20%  negative perception. It displayed that the respondents had high positive perception toward schema theory. It means that most of the students agree with the application of schema theory as a learning style in the fifth semester students of English Education Program of FKIP UNIB in academic year 2010/2011.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find the effect of CORI (Concept-Oriented Reading Instruction)strategy on students’ reading comprehension. This reseach was focused on whether CORI  strategy affected students’ reading comprehension. This research employed a quasi-experimental design. The subjects comprised 48 students of grade VIII of SMPN 4 Kota Bengkulu, divided into two classes, the experiment and control class. The instrument was a reading test. The result showed that CORI strategy was effective to improvestudents’ reading comprehension. In addition, the students also had positive attitudes toward the use of CORI strategy. It is recommended to conduct an experiment for another school level

Abstract

English teachers in all levels of education in Indonesia try hard to make their students able to speak and write English. Teachers sometimes  use code-mixing in their  classroom  instructions. This study is conducted to investigate Code – Mixing in English Classes of SMPN 14 Kota Bengkulu: Views From the Teachers. The participants were the English teachers who teach English at SMPN 14 Kota Bengkulu. The data were collected  from  audio-recording and interviewing to the teachers. The results indicated that teachers used  inter-sentential code-mixing  more frequently than intra-sentential code-mixing. It also found  that all of the teachers used code-mixing in pre-activity, while activity and post-activity of teaching and learning process in their English classes. They also used code-mixing for  giving instruction, translation and asking for clarification.   The English-Indonesian pattern is the most frequently used by the teachers in teaching English. The teachers used code-mixing in teaching English in the English classes to make the students able to understand the purpose of teaching and learning process easily.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the difficulties faced by the English teachers in Vocational High Schools in designing a lesson plan (RPP) based on KTSP. It employed a descriptive quantitative method. The population of this research was 23 respondents, from all teachers which have followed KTSP training. The sample was taken by using total sampling techniques. To collect the data, the researcher used the questionnaire. It was consist of 37 questions that it was divided into 9 aspects in a lesson plan namely; standard of competence, basic competence, indicator, the aims of learning, teaching material, the methods/techniques, the steps of learning activity, the tools/sources of material, and evaluation. It used the percentage formula and weighted mean formula to analyze data. The result of the research showed that there were not any significant difficulties in designing a lesson plan (RPP) based on KTSP faced by the English teachers in Vocational High Schools because all aspects were in sometimes/moderate predicate. It indicated that in designing a lesson plan (RPP) based on KTSP was not significant difficult. Beside that, according to the result above, the most difficult aspects were none aspect because it also with sometimes predicate. It indicated that the English teachers in Vocational High School did not find any significant difficulties in writing all aspects of the lesson plan.
