The purpose of this research is to determine the application of the scientific approach in teaching of English for 10th grade at Senior High School 4 Bengkulu City. This research used the descriptive method. The subject of this research was the English teacher at Senior High School 4 Kota Bengkulu. The number of participants in this research were 3 English teachers who tough in 10th grade. This study used observation checklist as an instrument. Observation checklist consisted of three main components. The first component consisted of five phases of scientific approach. They were observing, asking, exploring, associating and communicating. The second component was learning materials that supported the implementation of scientific learning approach and the third component was an assessment in scientific learning approach. The results of this study indicated that the implementation of scientific learning approach included the all five phases reached an average of 3.13 ( in ‘good ‘category), observing phase reached an average 2.80 ( in ‘fair” category), asking phase reached an average of 3.15 ( in ‘good; category), exploring phase reached an average of 3.18 ( in’ good ‘category), phase associating reached an average of 3.47 ( in ‘very good’ category) and communicating phase reached an average of 3.06 (in’ good ‘category). The second component of development of the material reached an average of 3.72 ( in’ very good’ categories) and the third component was an assessment reached 3.67 (in ‘very good’ category).

English teachers in all levels of education in Indonesia try hard to make their students able to speak and write English. Teachers sometimes use code-mixing in their classroom instructions. This study is conducted to investigate Code – Mixing in English Classes of SMPN 14 Kota Bengkulu: Views From the Teachers. The participants were the English teachers who teach English at SMPN 14 Kota Bengkulu. The data were collected from audio-recording and interviewing to the teachers. The results indicated that teachers used inter-sentential code-mixing more frequently than intra-sentential code-mixing. It also found that all of the teachers used code-mixing in pre-activity, while activity and post-activity of teaching and learning process in their English classes. They also used code-mixing for giving instruction, translation and asking for clarification. The English-Indonesian pattern is the most frequently used by the teachers in teaching English. The teachers used code-mixing in teaching English in the English classes to make the students able to understand the purpose of teaching and learning process easily.

This research seeks to study the quality of Curriculum – 13 (K13) English textbook provided by the Government of Indonesia. This will use the senior year of high school’s textbook due to its emphasis on reading aspect. In order to assess the quality of K13 English textbook, in-depth analysis on selected reading texts will be performed by measuring their lexical density using the Castello (2008) refers to the former way as the method of calculating, which is Ure (1971) and Halliday (1985). The analysis also attempts to shed the light regarding the readability of reading texts provided in the textbook. It is important as the basis to decide whether the K13 English textbook assessed has met the aspired quality in terms of content and suitable teaching strategy to handle difficulties of the reading materials within the book. The finding revealed that higher levels of texts do not necessarily guarantee higher lexical density indexes, that is to say, the levels of texts analyzed in this study did not match the expected indexes of lexical density. This is one aspect that can be improved of the K13 English textbook.

This research objective are analyze the common pattern in Jakarta Post and ‘Kompas’ newspaper editorials. The research method used was a mixed method. The research instrument is checklist. The procedure classifies all objects (10 texts Jakarta Post newspaper editorials and 10 texts ‘Kompas’ newspaper editorials) on the thematic progression patterns are checklist. The result showsthat the thematic progression in Jakarta Post and ‘Kompas’ newspaper editorials are found 3 patterns of thematic progression; 10 texts derived theme; 8 texts Constant progression, and 2 text linear progression. The different on thematic progression in Jakarta post and “Kompas’ newspaper editorials is difference,the difference of sequence in the patterns between Jakarta Post and ‘Kompas’ newspaper editorials. The Conclussion Thematic Progression in Jakarta Postand ‘Kompas’ newspaper editorials are derived theme and Constant progression.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of appropriate vocabulary by the first grade students of SMAN 6 Kota Bengkulu. Population of this research was all of the first grade students of SMAN 6 Kota Bengkulu. They were 198 students. The number of the sample was taken 25 % of the population. They were 50 students who were selected randomly. They were given a multiple choice vocabulary test with four choices. The result of this research showed that the vocabulary appropriateness by the first grade students of SMAN 6 Kota Bengkulu were as follows: deficient category was 6 %, mediocre category was 58 %, good category was 28 %, and very good category was 8 %. From the result of the study, it can be concluded that the vocabulary appropriateness by most of the first grade students of SMAN 6 Kota were in mediocre category. For further research, it is recommended to find out the factors that was faced the students in the use of appropriate vocabulary.

This research was aimed to identify the need of the students of agriculture study program on English materials. This research focused in find out the most important English skills and Sub-Skills for the students of agriculture study program and find out the English topics are needed for the students of agriculture study program at SMK Negeri 2 South Bengkulu. The research used mix method (combine both qualitative and quantitative method). This research was conducted in Agriculture Vocational School 2 South Bengkulu (SMK Negeri 2 South Bengkulu). The data was taken from the assistance of curriculum, the English teachers, productive teachers and the alumni of SMK Negeri 2 South Bengkulu. The data was collected by using questionnaire and interview. The result of the research shows that: first, the most important English skills for the students of agriculture study program at SMK Negeri 2 South Bengkulu are Speaking and Reading Skills. Reading sub-skills classified as; reading in general comprehension, understanding the plan of the text, guessing the meaning of unfamiliar words, do skimming and scanning activities and understanding the organization of the text. Speaking sub-skills classified as; speaking with fluency, attention of choice and pronunciation and using the correct ways/ manners of speaking. Second, English topics for the students of agriculture were the English topics related to the agriculture term. The topics of reading were; reading the text of part of plants, reading the text of the technique of maintenance of plants and operating hart equipment farming. The topics of speaking were; do direct conversations related to agriculture terms, presenting the report of filed productive practice, describing of how to operate hard equipment farming and maintenance of the plants.

This research aimed to find out the difficulties faced by the English teachers in Vocational High Schools in designing a lesson plan (RPP) based on KTSP. It employed a descriptive quantitative method. The population of this research was 23 respondents, from all teachers which have followed KTSP training. The sample was taken by using total sampling techniques. To collect the data, the researcher used the questionnaire. It was consist of 37 questions that it was divided into 9 aspects in a lesson plan namely; standard of competence, basic competence, indicator, the aims of learning, teaching material, the methods/techniques, the steps of learning activity, the tools/sources of material, and evaluation. It used the percentage formula and weighted mean formula to analyze data. The result of the research showed that there were not any significant difficulties in designing a lesson plan (RPP) based on KTSP faced by the English teachers in Vocational High Schools because all aspects were in sometimes/moderate predicate. It indicated that in designing a lesson plan (RPP) based on KTSP was not significant difficult. Beside that, according to the result above, the most difficult aspects were none aspect because it also with sometimes predicate. It indicated that the English teachers in Vocational High School did not find any significant difficulties in writing all aspects of the lesson plan.

This study aimed to find out the students’ difficulties in making inference in reading narrative passages in making inference in reading narrative passages. The population of this study included the eleventh graders of SMAN 1 Curup, and the students of XI SOS 4, which consisted of 34 students, became the research sample. For the instrument, the researcher used reading test which consisted of 40 questions and questionnaire which consisted of 30 items. The result showed that the students’ overall difficulty in making inference in reading narrative passages belonged to “moderate” category. It was proved by the students’ reading error mean score which was 47.5. The students’ highest difficulty was on inferences about the author’s attitude (5.88%, or “very high”).

This study investigates the interaction pattern in SMAN 1 Curup Kota, based on Coulthard theory (2002). This study analyzed the interaction pattern and type of act used by teacher and students to see the ideal pattern in the classroom. The data analysis shows that (a) the dominant pattern used in the classroom is complete pattern (IRF) and there are also semi-complete pattern (IR) and incomplete pattern (IF); (b) In the type of acts section, the elicitation is the highest followed by informative and starter in the initiation move, reply as the highest act in the response move, and in the follow up accept as the highest followed by comment. It can be concluded that interaction pattern in the classroom is dominantly occured is ideal pattern but it’s not good interaction pattern because delimit student opportunity in the classroom.

The abstract has become the first part that will be read by readers in a research article. Some important aspects in the abstract are move structure and linguistic features. This study examines the rhetorical moves and linguistic features of English research article abstract written by three groups of authors in Applied Linguistics. The research design was mixed method design combining quantitative and qualitative method with the corpus of this study consisted of 60 abstracts by postgraduate students, national and international authors found in RA abstracts. The results show that the common moves by three groups of authors have only three moves (i.e purpose, method, and results). The common linguistic features used by three groups of authors are active voice, present tense, and simple sentence. By comparing the three groups of abstracts the differences are found in the postgraduate students authors. They were used move 1 (Background/ introduction/ situation) fewer than national and international authors. Furthur the postgraduate students used past tense more dominant than present tense and using hedges is more frequently than national and international authors. This study concludes that in writing RA abstracts a writer should adjust the commonly used rules the abstract especially in using 5 moves in the abstracts.
