Abstract

Participation in school-based sports and extracurricular activities among female students remains relatively low and is often influenced by social support and internal motivational factors. This study examined the influence of parental and peer support on female students' interest in engaging in school-based volleyball extracurricular activities, with intrinsic motivation as a potential mediating variable. A quantitative correlational design using path analysis was employed. The participants were female students actively involved in volleyball extracurricular programs at a public junior high school in Padang (SMP Negeri 41 Padang). Data were collected using validated and reliable Likert-scale questionnaires. The results showed that parental support (β = 0.42, p < 0.001) and peer support (β = 0.36, p = 0.002) significantly predicted intrinsic motivation, which, in turn, significantly predicted students' interest in participating in volleyball (β = 0.51, p < 0.001). Intrinsic motivation was suggested to function as a mediating variable, indicating that social support influences students' interest both directly and indirectly. Parental support, peer support, and intrinsic motivation jointly accounted for 62.5% of the variance in students' interest, while other factors influenced the remaining 37.5%. These findings highlight the importance of social support and intrinsic motivation in promoting sustained participation in school-based sports and extracurricular activities.

Abstract

This study examines how infrastructure policy, facility access, and training system implementation shape pencak silat athlete achievement in Central Java, Indonesia. In many provincial contexts, formal sport policies are not always accompanied by sport-specific infrastructure and stable access, creating gaps between policy design and training practice. A qualitative case study was conducted using criterion-based purposive sampling involving six stakeholders representing policy, administration, coaching, and athlete perspectives within the provincial sport system. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, non-participant observations, and document analysis, and analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis emphasizing iterative coding and interpretive engagement across data sources. Interviews were guided by a protocol developed from the research questions, observations focused on training practices and facility use, and documents provided contextual policy evidence. The findings suggest that although pencak silat is formally recognized within provincial sport governance, infrastructure support remains general and not yet translated into sport-specific provision, facility access is uneven across training contexts, and training continuity is maintained through adaptive coaching practices and institutional coordination, resulting in athlete achievement that appears stable but reflects an effective yet fragile support system that depends more on human and organizational capacity than on stable structural support. This study contributes to the sport development literature by demonstrating that athlete achievement is an environmentally conditioned outcome shaped by the interaction between policy conditions, access arrangements, and adaptive training practices within a provincial sport environment. The findings indicate the need for more sport-specific infrastructure planning, stable facility access, and stronger coordination among sport institutions.

Abstract

Conceptual understanding in futsal learning remains a challenge for physical education students, who often prioritize practical performance over theoretical engagement. This study aims to examine the influence of self-confidence, motivation, and concentration on undergraduate students' perceived knowledge of futsal in the Physical Education, Health, and Recreation (PJKR) program at Universitas Pembinaan Masyarakat Indonesia. A quantitative correlational design with a cross-sectional approach was employed. Data were collected from 115 students using Likert-scale questionnaires measuring self-confidence, motivation, concentration, and perceived futsal knowledge. The data were analyzed using multiple regression after the assumptions for regression were met. The results showed that self-confidence (t = 5.606, p < .001), motivation (t = 2.333, p = .021), and concentration (t = 2.187, p = .031) each had a positive and significant effect on perceived futsal knowledge. Collectively, these variables significantly predicted perceived futsal knowledge (F = 16.552, p < .001), accounting for 30.9% of the variance, indicating a moderate explanatory power. These findings suggest that psychological factors contribute meaningfully to students’ perceived understanding in futsal learning, although a substantial proportion of variance remains influenced by other factors. This study extends sport education research by highlighting the role of psychological variables in shaping perceived conceptual understanding. It expands the field's scope by examining psychological predictors of perceived conceptual knowledge in futsal learning, emphasizing the importance of addressing psychological factors and integrating psychological support into instructional design in physical education to enhance students' conceptual engagement.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of electronic modules on sports nutrition in sports nutrition courses. This study employed a quasi-experimental one-group pre-test–post-test design involving 60 physical education students enrolled in sports nutrition courses. The research instruments consisted of comprehension tests, affective assessments, and skills tests related to calculating energy and nutritional requirements. Data were analyzed using paired-sample t-tests. The results showed significant improvements in cognitive scores, t(59) = 16.16, p < 0.05, d = 2.281. There was an increase in students' affective t(59) = 7.70, p < 0.05, d = 0.97. There was an increase in students' skills t(59) = 28.99, p < 0.05, d = 5.692. These findings indicate that the use of the sports nutrition e-module was associated with improvements in students’ cognitive, affective, and skills scores during hybrid learning. The sports nutrition e-module may serve as a digital learning resource that supports competency development in sports nutrition learning contexts.

Abstract

Sleep quality among college students is associated with various psychological and behavioral factors, including perceived stress and physical activity levels. Sleep disorders have become an increasingly prevalent health issue in the student population, particularly due to academic stress and lifestyle changes. Sleep quality is determined not only by sleep duration but also by deep sleep phases, which play an important role in physiological recovery, emotional regulation, and cognitive function. This study aimed to examine the associations of perceived stress and physical activity levels with sleep quality among sports science students. A descriptive cross-sectional design was employed involving 186 students selected through a total sampling technique. Data were collected using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS), Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ), and Sleep Quality Scale (SQS). The findings indicated that perceived stress was significantly associated with sleep quality (β = .447, p < .001), whereas physical activity level was not significantly associated with sleep quality (β = −.059, p = .376). The overall regression model was statistically significant, F(2,183) = 23.089, p < .001, with R² = .201. These findings suggest that perceived stress plays a more prominent role than physical activity in explaining variations in sleep quality among sports science students. Therefore, strategies aimed at improving sleep quality in this population may benefit from prioritizing stress management alongside the promotion of healthy lifestyle behaviors.

Abstract

Limited access to affordable and consistent ball-feeding technology remains a practical challenge for table tennis training in schools and grassroots sports programs, particularly in resource-constrained environments. This study developed and preliminarily evaluated “Robopoly,” a low-cost table tennis ball launcher engineered from repurposed fan motors to support structured technical training. Its novelty lies in a sustainable mechanical design intended as an affordable alternative to commercial robotic systems. The development process included needs assessment, prototype development, expert validation, product refinement, and preliminary field testing. Content validity, assessed by four experts using Aiken’s V Index, yielded a mean score of 0.78, classified as feasible. A pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design involving 10 athletes was used to assess forehand and backhand stroke accuracy. The paired-samples t-test indicated improvements in forehand accuracy, t(9) = −4.25, p = .002, Cohen’s d = 1.34, and backhand accuracy, t(9) = −3.98, p = .003, Cohen’s d = 1.26. These findings provide preliminary evidence of short-term improvements in stroke accuracy following the use of Robopoly and indicate its potential to support consistent and repeatable ball-feeding practice in resource-constrained educational and community sport settings. However, the absence of a control group limits causal interpretation. Further controlled studies with larger samples and longer follow-up periods are needed to establish the effectiveness and longer-term training effects of the device.

Abstract

Modern soccer requires players to sustain repeated high-intensity efforts, making VO₂Max and Heart Rate Recovery (HRR) important physiological indicators of performance. However, training practices in field settings often rely on intuition rather than objective physiological monitoring. This study aimed to examine changes in VO₂Max and HRR following a structured interval training program among adolescent soccer players. A pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design was employed as a preliminary intervention study. The sample consisted of 24 male players aged 16–17 years from Porma FC Malang, selected through purposive sampling based on fitness and competitive criteria. VO₂Max was measured using the Multistage Fitness Test (MFT). At the same time, HRR, defined as the decline in heart rate from peak exercise to one minute after exercise, was assessed using a pulse oximeter. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired sample t-tests with a significance level of p < 0.05. The results showed a statistically significant increase in VO₂Max from 43.23 to 50.02 ml/kg/min (p < 0.001, Cohen’s d = 3.45). HRR also showed a statistically significant change from 152.92 to 179.17 bpm (p < 0.001, Cohen’s d = 1.60). These findings suggest that structured interval training may be associated with changes in VO₂Max and post-exercise recovery responses among adolescent soccer players. Periodic MFT and HRR assessments may provide useful information for monitoring aerobic conditioning and recovery status during training programs. However, these findings should be interpreted cautiously due to the absence of a control group.
