Abstract

This research was conducted because there was an assumption that many students in class XI of SMA 4 Kotabumi had low ability in reading comprehension. The final goal of this research paper is to find out whether there is an effect of using Preview, Question, Read, Summarize, and Test (PQRST) method towards students reading comprehension at the eleventh grade students’ of SMA Negeri 4 Kotabumi Academic year 2018/2019. The method used in this research was quasi experimental design. The population in this research was all students of class XI of SMA Negeri 4 Kotabumi. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling technique. The sample in this research was class XI IPS 1 and XI IPS 4. The experimental class was treated using the PQRST method while the control class was not treated. The instrument used in this research was a multiple choice question test which consisted of 30 items for the pretest and posttest. The research instrument was given before and after the treatment. Meanwhile validity and reliability of the instrument had been calculated before it was tested. Based on the results of the t test by calculating the data obtained from the data post test student test results, then the results obtained tcount = 2.830. By using a significant level of 5% known ttable = 2,0003 so H0 is rejected, it is resulting that Ha accepted. This shows that there is an effect on the application of Preview, Question, Read, Summarize, and Test (PQRST) Method towards student’s reading comprehension at the eleventh grade student’s SMA Negeri 4 Kotabumi Academic Year 2018/2019.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out what are the types of grammatical cohesion used in essay writing applied by the third semester students of English education study program at Sekolah Tinggi Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan Muhammadiyah Kotabumi (STKIP). The participant of the research consist of 52 active the students, and then the researcher chooses 5% score consist of the highest and lowest of the total number of the students to represent the subject in the research. This research used descriptive qualitative method. Then, the data collecting technique in this research was by using the document as the way to collect the data. Furthermore, the data are in written form in the form of essay writing. The researcher collected the data by finding the types of grammatical cohesion used in essay writing, selecting grammatical cohesions which were filled in the text based on characteristics of kinds of the grammatical cohesion, namely references, substitutions, ellipsis, and conjunction. The result of analysis showed that there are 206 items of the grammatical cohesions used in essay writing students. In references, it was found 64 items. Then, in substitutions it was found 2 items. Next, in ellipsis it was found 1 items. The last, in conjunction it was found 139 items.

Abstract

An Analysis of Ideology and Translation Quality on Bilingual text “NANDA” English into Indonesian Maryani Institute of Health Science Surya Global Yogyakarta marry.tenang@gmail.com Abstract Some facts indicate that the majority of nursing and medical books used in universities in Indonesia still written in a foreign language (English), but the nursing and medical students are still less able to read the English books. Therefore, this situation makes a translator of English source book into Indonesian needed in the academic community. This research is aimed to explain the ideologies and to assess the quality of accuracy, acceptability and rediability of the translation on the target text ‘NANDA’. This research was a descriptive qualitative research. The design was embedded case study focusing on a single case. Technique of collecting data was content analysis, reading technique and noting technique. The data were analyzed using equivalent method. The results of research show that the foregnization ideology tended to be used in this book. Then, the impact of the application of those translation techniques toward the quality of acceptability of the translation was good than others. The acceptable category got the first rank than accuracy and readibility, because the data found in this research were natural, smooth and flexible. It does not look like translation. Keywords : translation, ideology, acceptability, accuracy, readibility level.

Abstract

The problem of this reasearch were what is the teachers factors and how the teachers’ factors in infuencing successfulness on English teaching learning of SMA Xaverius Lubuklinggau. This research was Descriptive qualitative. The subjects of this research were the English teachers of tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade in SMA Xaverius Lubuklinggau. Observation, and Interview were used. In observations, this research used observation sheet which consist of 2 aspects with 24 indicators, and Field notes. For interview it was consisted of 13 questions from 2 aspects. In analyzing the data, case study is applied and obtained the research by adjusting the fieldnotes then crosscheck the data from voice recorder when as the result of interviewing the subject and the data checklist of observation sheet. The teachers factors in teaching English is : teacher should be able to manage their classroom, because good vibes in classroom can help the english teacher to conduct their teaching process, then a teacher should have good skills in mastering English for making good comprehension, a nice teacher should memorize students’ name, smile often, giving motivation, and doing assessment. There were 2 factors in influencing the successfulness on English teaching learning as the characteristics of teacher there were ; skills and qualifications means should have good comprehension about practical knoeledge, content knowledge, contextual knowledge, and pedagogical knowledge, then support for the teachers such as ; orientation, adequate material, course guides, division of responsibilities, futher training, teaching release, mentors, feedback, rewards, help lines, and review. There are factors that influencing English Teaching Learning ; Institusional Factors, Teacher Factors, Teacher Factors, Teaching Factors, and Learners Factors which can be inspiration to the next researcher to conduct and expand new research.

Abstract

The process writing approach treats writing as a process rather than a completed product. Writing studies are conducted as part of the process due to the completion of the written text. In writing classes, this approach tends to focus on the student, and the teacher only acts as a guide. The process writing approach includes actions that occur when a written text is created. This research analyzed the benefits of the process approach as a teachers’ approach in order to enhance student writing skills in recount text. The researcher used the literature review and some of the previous research which has been conducted before as the measurements toward the process approach could improve student writing skill in recount text whether they understood the material which given by the teacher or not. As a result of the literature review and the previous research, the researcher found a significant influence of the process writing approach on writing progress and anxiety mainly in recount text. Based on this finding for written language research, the use of a process writing approach is recommended. Keywords: Teaching Writing, Process approach, Recount text

Abstract

ABSTRACTResearch objectives of psychological analysis in short stories Separated by Jhon Updike is to explore the true characteristics of the male lead character named Richard. My research on the psychological aspects of Richard. Psychology is related to someone mental. This is what I raised in the story of Separating. Psychology is very important in our life. Every healthy person is of course happy, but what will happen to the health of someone who is experiencing mental stress.Mental pressure and psychology disorders can be caused by many factors. In the story the main separating factor that causes chaos occurs is divorce and feeling unhappy despite having everything. Someone's dissatisfaction sometimes makes the person forget the real happiness. This was experienced by Richard he felt not happy even though he already had a wife and child.

Abstract

This researchs analyzed the types of metaphor and the meaning of metaphor in Kate Chopin’s story “ A Family Affair”. Metaphor is part of figurative language that compares one thing to another. According to Lakoff and Johnson (1980) in the classical view, metaphor can be defined as a figure of speech or trope in which a comparison is made between two unlike things that share certain characteristics.The aim of this research is to get clear descriptions of the types of metaphor find in this short story and to implied the meaning of each metaphor in Kate Chopin’s story “ A Family Affair”. Descriptive qualitative research method was used in conducting the research. The techniques of qualitative method is used to collect and identify the data.The results of this research were found nine metaphors in Kate Chopin’s story “ A Family Affair”. The types of metaphor that found in this research are ontological metaphorand conceptual metaphor. The types of metaphor that often found in this research conceptual metaphor. The meaning of each metaphor is different depends on the types that use in the short story.In conclusion, Kate Chopin’s story “ A Family Affair” has so many metaphors that should be analyzed. The types and the meaning of each metaphor that found in this researches based on the Lakof & Jhonson (1980) theory that lift the metaphor clearly.

Abstract

This paper concerns the analysis of Irony in Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut.JR. Kurt vonnegut.JR is an American writer, in that story he is willing to surprise the reader by providing many scenes of oppression carried out through equality and he likes to use ironic pictures to insinuate his criticisms. According to Gibbs (2008) in The Cambridge Handbook of Metaphor and Thought, “irony emphasize the difference between two states of affairs, making plain which is true” (p.458). Overall the story, many of the sentences and events have meaning that he strongly opposes the government which adheres to a system of equality or egalitarianism. Descriptive qualitative research method was used in conducting the research. The technique of qualitative method are used to find and indetify the data. The types of irony that found in this research are verbal irony and situational irony. This paper intends to analyze the story from the angle of the use of irony in the story, to get clear description of the types of irony find in this story and implied the meaning of each irony in Kurt Vonnegut’s story “Harrison Bergeron”.

Abstract

Abstract This study is aimed to investigating whether there is a significant difference between the students’ reading comprehension achievement using literary text and non-literary text through critical reading approach, finding which of the two materials that is more effective in reading comprehension. To achieve this goal, the researcher carried out quantitative study. Two classes have been taken: experimental class one using literary text and experimental class two using non-literary text. There were two instruments used in this research: reading test and interview. The results of data analysis showed there was a significant difference of between the students’ reading achievement taught by literary text and those taught by non-literary text through critical reading approach. Then, literary text was more effective than non-literary text. Hypothesis test showed that T-value was higher than T-table (4.402 > 2,002). It can be concluded null-hypothesis is rejected. It can be inferred that literary text is better than non-literary text for encouraging students’ critical reading. Keywords: critical reading approach, literary text, non-literary text, reading comprehension.

Abstract

Multilingual nowadays become a global phenomenon in which technology growing rapidly and increase people’s mobility from one place to another. Because of the globalized forms of a super diverse society, the identities cannot be identified as well as possible. This research aims to understand the learning system in the English classroom when the teacher explains for students and this study tries to seek the students challenging when the teacher gives the learning use uncommon vocabulary with the student's multilingual background. This study employed diagram statistics, in which questionnaires and interviews were used as the instrument along with qualitative design. Participants in this were 8 students 5 teachers from junior high school in Bogor regency. All students in the sample class were seven until nine grade classrooms.
