Abstract

Social problem is a social condition that harms people in a society. One of socialproblem that still exist in this world is racism. One of the films that deal with racism is TheHelp film. There are two statements of the problem in this present research; (1) whatare the types of racism found in The Help film, and (2) how do the black people resist racism in The Help film. Furthermore, to answer the first research question particularly used racism theory by Ruth Wodak (2001) and to answer the second research question in which the ways of black people resist racism, the researchers conducted resistance theory by James Scott (1990). The researchers employed Critical Discourse Analysis as the approach. In addition, the researchers employed qualitative research design. Then, in analyzing the data the researchers organized, coded, described and interpreted the data based on the context and the situation. In the findings, the researcher analyzed the data in some quotation from the script. Furthermore, the researchers concluded that the most dominant type of racism is everyday racism. However, for the hidden transcript and public transcript types of resistance, it only found the hidden transcript in the film.

Abstract

Essay is a piece of paper at least three paragraph longs involving introductoryparagraph, body, and concluding paragraph. It could be developed from the paragraph. However, students often get difficulties to find what they must write in their paper. Knowing that condition, the way how to get ideas could be achieved by watching film. The story ―Pada Zaman Dahulu‖ broadcasted in MNCTV could be used to keep the students‘ ideas while writing. In that story,there is a genceric structure which the students could develop in writing Essay. Therefore, in this study, the researcher stated the research question: How is the unity of Essay written by the students of English Education Program through the story ―Pada zaman Dahulu‖. This study aims to describe how unity the students‘ essays are. The researcher uses a qualitative design to describe the data which be collected by using purposive random sampling. After doing data collection technique, the researcher analyzes the students‘ essay which got A score in their essay by using the theory of Essau unity stated by Zemach (2005:78). Result shows that the students‘ Essays have good unity that could be reflected from the ideas connections each others. All the ideas written by the students were connected to the thesis statement and the supporting ideas in the main body have connections with the topic sentence. So, it could be concluded that the story ―Pada Zaman Dahulu‖ could keep the students‘ ideas while writing an Essay. So, the students‘ ability in creating an essay depends on the way how they gather the ideas to arrange in a proper components of Essay

Abstract

This paper aims to describe Afghan domestic women and the impact of maleoppressionover them. The research uses qualitative approaches with feminism theory, especially radical feminism. The data are taken from thenovels, Khaled Hosseini's A Thousand Splendid Suns and AtiqRahimi'sThe Patience Stone. In A Thousand Splendid Suns Mariam and Lailaare described as Afghan women are oppressed, powerless, marginalized and exploited in the domestic area. The impact of male domination are depression, anxiety,trauma and death either to the oppressor or the oppressed. This leads to the rejection against the dominancein the form of the struggle for freedom. In The Patience Stone, a female character whose name is unknown, experiencing violence in the household. Her husband does physical violence, sexual harassment and mental abuse. This caused her to be frustrated, depressed and traumatized.A tragic moment ends the story as the fruit of mal oppression against Afghan women in the domestic area, namely the desire to kill their husbands. From the portrait of women in Afghanistan as told by KhaledHosseini and AtiqRahimi, a moral value that can be drawn is a patriarchal system of society should be eliminated. Because of the patriarchal system, it will become the beginning of the maledominance to women in domestic area in this case their wives and daughters. Women should be treated as a partner in joy and sorrow. They are not considered as a slave or an outlet for their anger and desire.

Abstract

The scenes in the trailer shown are all sorts of interesting and prominent scenes to attract the attention of potential viewers and be able to describe the entire contents of the movie without giving too much information. The trailer was created to promote theatrical release of the movie and the movie trailer was a clip containing all the parts of the advertised movie, shown before other movie screenings in the cinema, and aimed for the audience to come to watch. The best way to teach English is to use interesting material, appropriate teaching methods, the use of technology that can be one of the important and effective support tools. Meta-analysis is essentially a synthesis of a topi  taken from several research reports. Based on the synthesis is drawn conclusions about the topic under study. This research uses some similar research results as basic data in conducting studies and conclusions. From the same five studies, it is concluded that Movie Trailer is effective as a learning medium because it can improve understanding in English learning.

Abstract

Teaching second language learners encourages lecturer to show up their creativity in class. For example: they can use new technique by considering need analysis, such as: using shadow reading in teaching English. Shadow reading is one of teaching technique applied in teaching English, especially teaching English intonation. Because intonation plays crucial part in conveying ideas, feeling, and information to other. Besides, considering pitch movement, second language learners also must consider the expresiveness and articulacy in English. The phenomenon encourages the researcher to conduct this study on teaching English intonation by using shadow reading. In this study, the researcher is eager to find the effectiveness of using shadow reading in teachingEnglish intonation. The researcher takes the first semester students of STKIP PGRI Jombang as the subject of this research. This study uses quasi experimental design. It is designed by using test, mainly: pre-test and post-test. The result of this study shows that using shadow reading is effective in teaching English Intonation. Through shadow reading, lecturer can bring hilarious atmosphere into the class of second language learners. It also can increase second language learners’ ability in using English intonation correctly

Abstract

In this article, the researcher analyzes Tufia in Chinua Achebe‘s Things Fall Apartand in Horace Walpole‘s the Castle of Otranto. The researcher then uses descriptive and dramatic method in analyzing the two novels through characterization by which the researcher means to present the characters mainly through description and discussion as well as through reporting the character‘s speech and action. At last, the researcher draws conclusion that the main characters, Okonkwo and Manfred undergo a tufia/a curse in the end of the story.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to describe an aids tool that can help the students tocomprehend, to retain the information, to understand, to improve the students‘ concentration in reading text for junior high school that is by using light classical music with appropriate volume, tempo, and right bit. This study is intended to describe the use of classical music to improve the students‘ concentration in reading text. This study used a descriptive qualitative study. This study is designing to describe the observed phenomenon in conducting teaching and learning process. The subject of the study was the junior high school English teacher‘s. The researcher used observation guidelines and note relating to design complete teaching and learning after the data has been collected, Light classical music can help the students relax. It affects students feeling therefore affect also in learning process. The right kind of light classical music tends to have both a relaxing and stimulating effect on the brain and on the whole nervous system. the students can absorb information much more quickly and effectively when student‘s brains are in a state of relaxed alertness

Abstract

styles talk about the style of speech, talk about not what is said but how to express it. Report talk is a term used in assessing male chats that focus on building status. Rapport Talk is a term used to assess women's chats that focus on creating and building relationships. The more specific objectives in this study were to find the differences in communication, communication change and equality of change that backgrounds of women and men in the language used inPygmalion by Goerge Bernad Shaw. The results of Genderlect style found in pygmalion act 2 category report style found are public speaking, asking question, telling story, listening, and conflict. And in the category of rapport style found is the private speaking, asking questions, conflict, listening, and telling story, while representing the social situation of England in the early 20th century where at that time the style of speaking into a benchmark the social value of British society found Genderlect Style change on Overall figure in Pygmalion Act 2, ie 4 people

Abstract

Lesson Study is not learning model but a model of teachers' professional development through the study of collaborative learning and sustainable as well as carrying the principles of collegiality and mutual learning to build a learning community (Hendayana, et al., 2006). This Study conducted a library research through a review of journal article that discuss about lesson study. As a model of development, lesson study widely adopted by teachers in Indonesia but its implementation procedures have been amended in accordance with the context and situation. Lesson Study is also potentially be applied to the Real Teaching (PPL) for students LPTKs, but need a clear implementation guidelines and operational for students, teachers, professors, and school.

Abstract

Understanding how words and grammatical choices are realized the context of situationis needed to understand a discourse.One of context of situation elements is field (topic which is talked about) that realized through transitivity system.The objective of this study were to describe the three aspects of transitivity system; process, participants and circumstances that associated with the process, and explain the field of Barrack Obama's Inaugural speech based on transitivity system analysis.This studywas qualitative study. Systemic Functional Linguistics was a theory that used to analyze the data. The data was the utterances which contains of words or phrases referring to transitivity system that taken fromthe transcript of Barrack Obama's Inaugural speech on January 20, 2009. The findingsshowed that the processes that found were material process, relational process, mental process, verbal process, behavioral process, and existential process. The participants were mostly we, our nation, us, you, I, all or America. Circumstances that mostly occur in the data were circumstance of location, manner, cause and accompaniment. Then, the field was Barrack Obama addressed all of the peoplewatching or listening his speech in the world, especially American people to do some actions in making America better
