Abstract

The process of acquiring language in a child occurs when the child is learning a mother tongue (native language). Language acquisition is the process of children getting the ability to capture, produce, and use words for understanding and communication.  In this case, the researcher presents how the child acquires the language. This research discusses the first language acquisition on a three-years child based on phonological, semantic and syntax aspects. This research will conduct with descriptive qualitative research. The objectives of descriptive qualitative study are obtained from the utterances of her boy named is Mu’ammar Syauqi Idris. The researcher also took the data by observation and video recording.  Based on the research, the researcher concluded that Mu’ammar able to communicate appropriately.

Abstract

Over the years, the teaching and learning of English have changed from conventional chalk and talk methods to modern methods that involve various platforms such as Quizizz, which is free and easy to use. This study attempts to explores on EFL learners’ perceptions on Quizizz in Literal Reading. Using the case study approach, a total of 30 EFL learners were identified in this research. The results show that EFL learners’ Perceptions look highly upon Quizizz and its implementation in the classroom because it brings many benefits to the learners, including improvement in language proficiency and learning abilities. As a final result, EFL learners’ Perceptions toward E-Learning Quizizz in Literal Reading it can be concluded that 60.8% of respondents agreed, 26.8% stated strongly agree and 12, 4% disagreed related to the using of Quizizz in Literal Reading.

Abstract

In learning English, students must be equipped with knowledge of good and correct pronunciation so that they can be a support for students in English pronunciation. One application that can be used to practice pronunciation by Artificial Intelligence is ELSA Speak. In ELSA Speak, students can learn the correct pronunciation generated from native speakers, and can practice their pronunciation and get digital feedback from ELSA Speak, and correct their pronunciation. Two main discussions were the implementation of digital feedback on Elsa Speak for students and the benefits of digital feedback on ELSA Speak in learning English. This research uses qualitative case studies, in which observation and semi-structured interviews were used as instruments in collecting the data. The result of the research shown that ELSA Speak can help students to learn how to pronounce some words, and this application can make the students be more confident when want to talk with English language.

Abstract

This study was intended to find out the effect of using Discussion Method on students reading comprehension. The population of this study was the second semester students of Indonesia Prima University, Medan, academic year 2019/2020 with four parallel classes, there are 120 students totally. The sample of the research was two classes, which were selected by using cluster random sampling technique, the total were 60 students. The sample was divided into two groups; the first group is 30 students, Morning A Class, which was the experimental group. The second group is 30 students, Morning B Class, which was the control group. The experimental group was taught by using discussion method while control group was taught without discussion method. The instrument used for collecting the data was test in the form of multiple choices with the total number of 20 questions. The tests were divided into two; pre-test and post-test. The reliability of the test was 0.93. After the data had been collected, they were analyzed by using t-test formula in order to see whether the discussion method significantly affects students reading comprehension. The result of the analysis showed that the t- observed 2.07, it was higher than the t-table 1, 67 with the level of significant 0, 05 and the degree of freedom (df) 58. The result of the analysis showed that the hypothesis of the study was accepted. It was concluded that discussion method significantly affects students reading comprehension.

Abstract

Symbol is the used object by the author to convey messages in literary works through learning process to get hidden meanings. In children literature, symbols could become objects as the bridge for parents or teachers to be role models to transfer the positive traits for readers especially children as the next generation of a nation. This research aimed to find the symbols on King’s Stilts Children Book referring to character building as nation character traits. A descriptive qualitative was used as a method in this study by using content analysis based on heuristic and retroactive reading referred to checklist of character building assessment to the children book entitled The Kings’ Stilts written by Dr. Seuss, an American author of children literature. The result showed that King Birtram, Eric, and Lord Droon were symbols for signifiers which were used to represent the signified involving the character traits such as self discipline, hard work, responsible, social care, creative, sense of humor, wise, solemn, deceptive, evasive, uncaring, unfeeling even dishonest. It could be concluded that exploring hidden meanings of the used symbols in children literature could become one of the ways to build the positive characters for children even stimulating the reading habit as the implication of this study.

Abstract

People in Indonesia often use two languages interchangeably or by mixing two language conversations in daily life. The phenomenon of mixing language is often called code mixing. Code mixing also used on Quipper video, the speaker submits learning material using code mixing to make it easier to understand. The purpose of this study is to find out the types of code mixing by Hoffman's theory namely intra-sentential code mixing, intra-lexical code mixing, and involving a change of pronunciation, and the factors that influence code mixing by Holmes's theory namely the participants, social context, the topic, and the function. This study used qualitative content analysis as an approach. The data source will take from Quipper video Indonesia Youtube channel. The results of this study showed that the teacher used all the types of code mixing by Hoffman namely intra-sentential code mixing 87%, intra-lexical code mixing 11%, and involving a change of pronunciation 2%. While for the factors that influence code mixing, the researcher found three factors that used by the teacher namely the participants 30%, the topic 45%, and the function 25%.

Abstract

Speaking is the ability to say a sentence to communicate or articulate intentions, ideas, beliefs, and feelings that are formed and organized in a suitable way for the listener's needs so that what is expressed can be understood. Someone must communicate orally in spoken communication, efficiently and transmitting information to the listener or other so that the audience can comprehend the speaker's stated goals and objectives. In Indonesia, the problems faced by students regarding their speaking performance is related to not only their linguistic and personality factors, but also the types of classroom tasks provided by the teachers. Thus, this section suggests that teachers have an important role in fostering learners ability to speak English well. To address this issue, teacher can use audio visual media. Visual elements contained in the media, can help in advancing the student’s language aptitude. The use of the visual content, particularly that of video, assists the learning in their academic endeavours.

Abstract

The previous study already conducted a similar study in several fields, except education, thus, this study was conducted to complete it. This study aimed at investigating discourse patterns of research article abstracts in the education discipline. The data were a set of research article abstracts of five sub-disciplines in education, i.e., language education, mathematics and natural science education, social education, technological education, and elementary education. The data were collected from journals of education study. This research was conducted by implementing a four-move abstract structure. The results found that Moves 1 (research space), 2 (research procedure), and 3 (result summary) were obligatory, while Move 4 (result evaluation) was considered an optional move. The most common pattern discovered was 1-2-3. The pattern of 1-2-3-4 is another common pattern obtained, except for social education. These results provide the discourse patterns of educational research article abstracts and are regarded as new findings in the previous and related studies.

Abstract

Feedback plays an important role in EFL classroom for both learners and teachers. Many theoreticians and practitioners in the field of education paid attention to the used of feedback in learning. The aim of this study is to know how EFL teacher provide written feedback in response to the learners’ work and how the learners’ perspective toward the teachers’ written feedback during pandemic through online learning. To obtain the data for this study, a mixed method research design is used since it needs both qualitative and quantitative data. Some instruments is used to collect the data of this study are the students’ graded compositions to identify the nature of the feedback provided and a close-ended questionnaire was given to the participant EFL students in order to gain insight into their opinions and attitudes to their teacher’s feedback. The result reveals that the teachers provided many indirect feedbacks for their students that mostly focused on the content of their writing and sometimes on their grammar, vocabulary, and spelling. Most of the students have possitive impression and feeling as they interested and satisfied with the teachers’ feedback.

Abstract

It was the goal of this study to figure out what kinds of figurative language Selena Gomez's song lyrics contain and to found out the interpretation in those songs. There wer six songs of Selena Gomez chosen to be the source of data, namely: Lose you to love me, Vulnerable, Wolves, Let me get me, People you know, Back to you. To collect the data, browsing the website Genius.com, searched the scripts of the song lyrics and copying and printing the song lyrics as data. Qualitative research was used in this study. Document or content analysis is a common application for this technique. Analyzing the data included various steps such as classifying it, describing it, tabulating it, and drawing conclusions from it. As a technique for verifying the validity of the data, the researchers in this study used data triangulation. Overall, Selena Gomez's song lyrics had 44 figurative language analysis data points. There were 3 (7%) data of simile, 20 (45%) data of metaphor, 2 (5%) data of personification, 2 (5%) data of metonymy, 3 (7%) data of symbol, 2 (5%) data of paradox, 11 (25%) data of hyperbole and 1(1%) data of irony. Through this research, the researcher would like to suggest people to analyze figurative language in the song, because figurative language is an interesting subject to study and analyze. In each types of figurative language are having other meaning. That is why the researcher thinks it is important for English student who want to know more about meaning especially about figurative language.
