Abstract

This study is primarily aimed to find out the methods used in translating metaphor in a novel entitled “Illegitimate Tycoon” by Janette Kenny and the translation entitled “Dihantui Masa Lalu”. The writer applied descriptive qualitative research design in conducting this study. It is a design which focuses on the natural characteristics of data, in which the writer described and elaborated the findings of the study. The writer applied Newmark’s theory of methods of translation (word-for-word translation, literal translation, faithful translation, semantic translation, adaptation translation, free translation, idiomatic translation, and communicative translation) in analyzing the data. Based on the data analysis, the writer found that from 207 data of metaphor clauses/phrases, the translator used 5 methods from 8 methods of translation. Free translation was used 159 times (76,81%), Literal Translation was used 39 times (18,84%), Semantic Translation was used 6 times (2,91%), Idiomatic Translation was used 2 times (0,96%), and Adaptation was used 1 times (0,48%). It means that mostly the translator used free translation in translating metaphor. The most dominant method used in translating metaphor in a novel “Illegitimate Tycoon” by Janette Kenny is Free Translation. The translator used free translation mostly is because the translator usually paraphrase the original text but the SL manner, content, and form are not used.

It was proved from the result of the post test for the experimental group (78.5) is higher than the control group (55.25) and the result of t-test (4.42) was higher than the t-table (2.021) and level of significance (0.05) which means that the hypothesis stating that the students’ achievement taught by using think-pair-share was higher than the conventional method in teaching present tense was accepted. The conclusion is the t-observed is higher than t-table (4.42 > 2.021; p = 0.005). It means that students’ learning achievement taught by using think-pair-share is higher than the conventional method. So, English teachers/lecturers are suggested to apply think-pair-share in teaching present tense.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the level of translation accuracy produced by DeepL in the film Inside Out 2 and compared it with the official subtitles. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the researcher selected 30 segments from the film's dialogues that contain various expressions, idioms, and contextual meanings. The accuracy of DeepL translations was assessed using the translation quality assessment model developed by Nababan, Nuraeni, and Sumardiono (2012), which classifies translations into three levels: accurate, moderately accurate, and inaccurate. The results showed that most of DeepL's translations felt into the "moderately accurate" category with total 67%, 17% as accurate and 17% also as inaccurate level. This was due to literal translation, misinterpretation of idiomatic expressions, and lack of contextual adaptation. In contrast, the official subtitles demonstrated higher accuracy by delivering contextually appropriate and culturally sensitive translations. These findings suggested that while DeepL offers grammatically fluent output, it still lacks the semantic and pragmatic sensitivity required for high-quality subtitle translation in films.
