Abstract

Background: A midwife's fundamental care includes lowering anxiety, improving comfort, and managing labor pain. The health of the mother and fetus is adversely affected by some pharmacologic techniques for reducing labor pain. Applying ice massage to acupressure points can have a variety of benefits, including promoting energy flow there and reducing stress and discomfort by activating peripheral nerve receptors. Activating the spleen (SP6) and large intestine (L14) points reduces labor pain and alleviate anxiety. Purpose: The aim of this paper is to review the literature to identify the effect of ice massage on labor pain and anxiety at SP6 and LI4 point. Methods : A narrative review of journal articles was conducted. Databases searched were PubMed and Google Scholar. Search terms used were “ice massage”, “labor pain”, and “anxiety”. Limitations included ‘English language’and ‘published between 2000–2024. Results : Reviewed for this paper were 10 studies that met the inclusion criteria. Results were categorised using thematic analysis. Themes that emerged were labor pain and anxiety and will be explored under these themes. Conclusions : The impact of ice massage on labor discomfort and anxiety has been covered in this review of the research. Most of the research articles that were used to source this review were conducted at SP6 and LI4 stages and published in clinical trials. The results of the study showed that applying ice massage to the LI4 and SP6 sites reduced labor discomfort. A midwife may think about using ice massage as a technique to lessen anxiety. Midwives can utilize the results of this study to manage labor discomfort.

Abstract

Background: Rapid population growth is a pressing concern with widespread implications, including potential food and energy crises. To address this issue, the Indonesian government has implemented Family Planning (FP) programs. However, the total fertility rate (TFR) continues to rise. A high unmet need for family planning is a significant contributing factor. Unmet need for family planning is defined as the percentage of women of reproductive age, whether married or in a union, who have an unmet need for family planning. Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the factors associated with the incidence of unmet need among women of reproductive age at the Padang City Community Health Center. Method: A cross-sectional methodology and analytical observational study design were used. The study included 95 non-pregnant women of reproductive age in Padang City. The sample size was determined using a quota sampling approach. Data were analyzed using the Chi-Square test with a 95% Confidence Interval (CI). Results: The results indicated that the p-value was 0.000, which is ≤ 0.05, indicating a significant correlation between knowledge, attitude, and the incidence of unmet need. Conclusion: These findings suggest that addressing these factors could be an effective strategy for decreasing the incidence of unmet need among women of reproductive age. Health providers need to raise awareness about family planning and enhance women's understanding of the importance of utilizing family planning services

Abstract

This study investigates the effect of acupressure on the pericardium 6 (PC6) point in reducing nausea and vomiting among pregnant women during the first trimester. Utilizing a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach, the research was conducted with 85 pregnant women from the Mamboro Health Center area. A consecutive sampling technique was used to select a sample of 15 respondents. The study employed the Pregnancy-Unique Quantification of Emesis Nausea (PUQE-24) questionnaire to measure nausea and vomiting severity. Results showed that prior to acupressure treatment, 80% of participants experienced moderate nausea and vomiting, while 20% had mild symptoms. Following the application of PC6 acupressure, 80% of participants reported mild symptoms, and only a moderate category remained. The Wilcoxon test yielded a p-value of 0.003, indicating a statistically significant reduction in symptoms (p < 0.05). The findings suggest that acupressure on the pericardium 6 point effectively reduces nausea and vomiting in pregnant women during their first trimester in the Mamboro Health Center area.

Abstract

Dysphoric milk ejection reflex (D-MER) is a transient discomfort that occurs during milk secretion. A study was conducted to identify the association between psychiatric disorders and D-MER symptoms and support mothers with D-MER who have a history of psychiatric disorders. Questionnaires on basic information, awareness of D-MER, and coping with D-MER were distributed online to people who were at least 18 years old during the survey and had no history of postpartum depression. The responses of those who had experienced D-MER were analyzed. Among participants with a history of D-MERS, 58.2% (64 participants) and 85.5% (94 participants) had a history of depression and psychiatric disorders, respectively. Those with a history of depression had significantly longer symptoms than those without a history of depression (P=0.005), and were more likely to have difficulty losing confidence due to D-MER symptoms (P=0.011). The results suggest that a history of psychiatric disorders is associated with the onset of D-MER. It was inferred that reduced serotonin secretion may lead to a greater reduction in dopamine, which is required for the secretion of prolactin for milk production.

Abstract

Rhesus incompatibility is major factor contributing to perinatal morbidity and mortality. Therefore, need to determine the knowledge and uptake of preconception rhesus factor screening among pregnant women in Ibadan, Nigeria. A descriptive cross-sectional design was used and a total number of 400 pregnant women were recruited by multistage sampling from 3 LGA in Ibadan. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and presented in frequency tables, percentages and bar chart. The findings revealed that most 247 (61.8%) of the pregnant women's age group was between 25-34 years with the mean age of 29.1±5.3. More than half 225 (53.6%) of the respondents were aware that the Rhesus factor is found on the surface of the red blood and 265 (66.3%) of the respondents were not aware of preconception rhesus factor screening. This is evident as most 332 (83%) of the pregnant women were not screened before their first pregnancy, 160 (40%) never heard about rhesus incompatibility, more than half 224 (56%) do not know the precautions that rhesus negative mother should take. The prevalence of rhesus negative individuals among the pregnant women in the study population area was 6.4, while 129 (32.3%) do not know their rhesus status. There is significant association between respondents’ knowledge of rhesus factor and preconception rhesus factor screening (p = 0.0000, X2 = 190.966). Based on these findings, it was recommended that health care providers should use every contact with people as an opportunity to educate not just women, but also men and every couple about rhesus factor screening and rhesus incompatibility.

Abstract

Before planning a pregnancy, women should prepare themselves optimally in physical, psychological, and social aspects. This study aims to analyze the relationship between BMI and readiness for pregnancy and belief in having a healthy pregnancy. This research is an analytical study using a cross-sectional method with 196 respondents. Bivariate analysis was conducted using the chi-square test, which revealed no significant relationship between BMI and readiness for pregnancy or belief in a healthy pregnancy (p-value >0.05). However, there was a significant relationship between readiness for pregnancy and the belief in a healthy pregnancy (p-value=0.000). BMI is not the primary factor associated with readiness for pregnancy or the belief in having a healthy pregnancy. This may be due to other factors exerting a stronger influence on readiness and belief in a healthy pregnancy. Readiness for pregnancy can enhance positive perceptions of a woman’s ability to undergo a healthy pregnancy and influence better behavior and decision-making for a healthy lifestyle during pregnancy. Comprehensive interventions during the preconception period need to be developed to prepare women planning for pregnancy so they ready and confident in their ability to undergo a healthy pregnancy

Abstract

Obesity is described as an excess of adipose tissue accumulating in a body. Obesity can occur at any age, including pediatrics. In addition to the related health problems, obesity in children can increase the risk of developing chronic diseases. This literature review was carried out using search engines PubMed, Elsevier and Google Scholar, limiting the last 5 years to articles from 2019 to 2024. The main intervention to overcome pediatric obesity is dietary intervention, but a combination with other interventions such as physical activity, behavioral adjustments, and parental support may be more effective. With early intervention, pediatric obesity can be managed well
