Abstract

This study examines sexuality literacy among students of Indonesian Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) as institutions historically central to moral and character development, yet recently marred by cases of sexual violence. Such incidents urgently require preventive reforms and decisive action against perpetrators. The research describes students’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding sexuality literacy, their textual and contextual interpretations of Qur’anic verses, and school policies for preventing sexual violence. Using surveys, focus groups, and interviews, the study explores students’ perspectives and lived experiences in a pluralistic society. Findings reveal that strengthening sexuality literacy rooted in the Qur’an is achieved through four strategies. There are direct studies using a Sexuality Literacy Module and thematic Qur’anic interpretation, integration into fiqh studies, incorporation into moral education, and cultivation of a gender-sensitive, safe school culture. This research offers a practical framework for pesantren to align sexual education with Islamic teachings while addressing contemporary challenges. By demonstrating how critical-reflective Qur’anic learning fosters informed, gender-aware students, it provides policy guidance for educators, religious leaders, and regulators seeking to reduce sexual violence and promote holistic character formation in Islamic educational institutions.

Abstract

This study examines the political involvement of pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) during the 2024 Indonesian presidential election and its implications for values education and character development within the pesantren tradition. Employing a qualitative approach and media document analysis, data were collected from online news articles documenting pesantren participation, including support from religious leaders (kiai) and community mobilization. The findings indicate that pesantren play a dual role: as religious institutions providing moral legitimacy and as political actors influencing election outcomes. This duality sparks conflict between the pesantren’s core mission of instilling values, such as moral integrity, independent thinking, and interfaith harmony, and the pragmatic demands of political support. Political involvement can strengthen the pesantren’s social influence and simultaneously risk eroding foundational educational values, creating conflicts of loyalty among students, and weakening the integrity of the character-based learning environment. This study concludes that resolving this tension requires a conscious commitment to separating the institution’s political role from the daily pedagogical processes of value transmission and character development. These findings contribute to the discourse on how religious educational institutions can maintain their character-building mission amid increasing democratic political pressures.

Abstract

Local languages continue to experience the threat of diglossia leakage. This study analyzes the vitality of the Tengger Javanese Dialect (BJDT), the role of women in the preservation of BJDT through traditional practices, and opportunities for the preservation of BJDT in other public spaces. A descriptive qualitative research design with a field study approach was implemented in Tosari Village, using interview techniques, observation, and literature review for data collection. Upon data collection, analysis was conducted based on the UNESCO language vitality indicators and cultural theme analysis. The research findings indicate that BJDT falls into the vulnerable category, as determined by the nine language vitality indicators. The evaluation of the issue leans toward the transmission of the language to younger generations, highlighting the need for the role of women, especially mothers, as the primary educators for children. A folkloric approach was employed to examine traditions passed down within the community, such as kumpul perapen in the private domain and bethek-sinoman in the public or local community domain. The opportunity for revitalizing BJDT in other public spaces could be realized through the preparation of a policy brief for local government addressing language policy issues that involve the local community. This research demonstrates how women’s traditional practices are central to sustaining BJDT, offering a framework that integrates community involvement, local government support, cultural documentation, and policy development to strengthen preservation efforts and expand scholarly understanding of this vulnerable tradition today.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of technology in the society 5.0 era presents opportunities and challenges, particularly in shaping ethical behavior and social responsibility. This study explores how integrating the philosophy of science with character education can strengthen moral formation amid these changes. Using a qualitative literature review, it analyzes scholarly sources on philosophy of science, character education, and digital-era morality. The findings show that the philosophy of science offers a framework for ethical and critical thinking, while character education provides practical pathways to internalize and apply these values. Unlike previous studies that address them separately, this research highlights their integration as a strategy to align technological competence with ethical responsibility. Embedding philosophical principles into character education encourages students to develop cognitive, technical, and moral capacities simultaneously. This synergy can inform curriculum design, teacher training, and digital literacy programs, ultimately fostering ethically grounded digital citizens who are prepared to navigate the complexities of society 5.0.

Abstract

Faith and character development in secondary schools is an important foundation in shaping a young generation with integrity, faith, and the ability to face the challenges of the modern era. This article explores faith development strategies based on biblical values to develop students’ character. The research method is based on a literature study with an analytical descriptive approach with theological literature related to Christian faith-based character education. The results of the study indicate that the application of biblical values, such as love (1 Corinthians 13:4–7), honesty (Proverbs 12:22), and responsibility (Colossians 3:23), can be integrated into learning activities through a reflective approach, teacher role models, and co-curricular activities that build a community of faith. The discussion concludes that the integration of faith and character education improves students' morality, while strengthening their spirituality, which prepares them to face cultural plurality and digitalization. A faith development strategy based on biblical values, therefore, can serve as a model for effectively developing holistic Christian character in secondary schools.

Abstract

This article examines the philosophical meaning of naming universities in Indonesia based on figures from the archipelago and its relevance to the development of the concept of impactful campuses. This study departs from the assumption that the name of a university is not merely an administrative identity, but a living symbol that embodies values, ethics, and educational ideals. This research uses a philosophical approach with descriptive-interpretative methods to interpret the values embodied in Nusantara figures such as Mahapatih Gadjah Mada, Prabu Airlangga, Prabu Udayana, Sultan Hasanuddin, Pangeran Diponegoro, and Kapitan Pattimura. The results of the study show that naming universities after Nusantara figures carries a philosophical meaning from the ethical perspective, such as the values of spirituality, independence, nationalism, dedication, unity, prosperity, harmony, determination, sovereignty, moral courage, solidarity, and people’s leadership. These values have substantive relevance for the development of impactful campuses, as they provide a normative framework for internalizing values in fostering the application of the three pillars of higher education, academic culture, and university governance. This article affirms that an impactful campus is not solely determined by policy achievements or performance indicators, but rather by the character building of the academic community established in the values of nationalism, social responsibility, and intellectual sovereignty.

Abstract

Seawater intrusion and declining groundwater quality in coastal Lovina require more than purely technical responses that contribute to cultivating environmental values and the character of local communities. This paper describes a community-based education design for groundwater conservation through an infiltration-well siting plan and a pilot biopore installation in Kalibukbuk Village, Buleleng, Bali. We employed a participatory community service approach that integrated stakeholder coordination and interactive discussions with village authorities, community leaders, residents, and managers in charge of public facilities. Field observations were also performed to validate local constraints and opportunities for infiltration. Inputs from these discussions were synthesized into a context-based siting plan, which then guided the installation of four pilot biopores in a public area. The program was evaluated qualitatively using participatory observation and structured feedback collected during coordination meetings, site visits, and implementation activities. Results include an initial technical planning package identifying potential locations for infiltration wells and biopores, successful installation of four pilot biopores, and early indications of strengthened daily practices aligned with environmental character, such as organic-waste segregation for composting and improved groundwater-conservation literacy. These findings suggest that value education linked to tangible conservation actions can enhance community readiness for more sustainable groundwater management in coastal settings.

Abstract

Existing studies on Islamic leadership in Indonesia heavily focus on pesantren-based kiais, highlighting institutional authority as the primary source of religious legitimacy. This study addresses the limited attention received by non-institutional religious actors by examining the role of kiais without pesantren in constructing local wisdom values for peacebuilding in multicultural settings. Using a phenomenological approach, this research was conducted in three different locations: Wagir (Malang Regency), Polehan (Malang City), and Bali. Data were extracted from in-depth interviews and participant observation involving three key informants actively engaged in interreligious interaction. The findings reveal three main patterns. First, religious authority is constructed through social proximity and moral credibility rather than formal institutional affiliation. Second, these kiais employ dialogical and mediative strategies, particularly listening-based engagement and informal conflict resolution, in managing interreligious conflict. Third, they develop contextual interpretations of Islamic teachings by adapting religious practices to local cultural norms to sustain social harmony. This study theoretically extends the concept of religious authority beyond institutional frameworks toward a model of grassroots value construction rooted in lived social interactions. Empirically, it highlights the role of non-pesantren kiais as active agents of peacebuilding in multicultural contexts. Practically, the findings offer a contextual model of value-based religious leadership relevant for peace education and community-based conflict mitigation in pluralistic societies.

Abstract

This study examines how teachers serve as agents of socialization in shaping children’s social character, specifically within the inclusive education setting at Bina Bintang Kindergarten, which is managed by PT Arutmin Indonesia NPLCT in Kotabaru Regency, South Kalimantan. The research targets mechanisms, such as exemplary behavior, classroom norms, and conflict mediation as pathways for internalizing social values among children with special needs. Employing a qualitative case study approach, the study collects data through participant observation, in-depth interviews with teachers, the principal, and homeroom teachers, as well as documentation of classroom activities. Research findings indicate that teachers serve as role models in instilling values such as empathy, mutual aid, fairness, and respect for diversity. The consistent enforcement of classroom rules such as taking turns speaking, sharing play materials, and resolving conflicts nonviolently contributes to the development of self-discipline and an understanding of social boundaries among children with special needs. Conflict mediation through dialogue serves as an effective social learning space that helps children recognize emotions, understand others’ perspectives, and develop collaborative solutions. These practices strengthen a classroom culture that is safe, supportive, and inclusive. The implications of this research underscore the importance of designing structured social routines, strengthening collaboration among special education teachers, homeroom teachers, and school principals, and developing internal guidelines for social-emotional learning within the school. Through a planned and sustained approach, education at Bina Bintang Inclusive Preschool can serve as a strategic foundation for developing children’s social character from an early age, particularly for children with special needs.
