Abstract

The Mandi Safar tradition has been an integral part of the cultural landscape in Baru village, located in the Obi subdistrict of South Halmahera regency. This ritual symbolizes self-purification through immersion in the river, representing a quest for divine protection and the desire to be spared from calamities and misfortunes. Nevertheless, some community members perceive this practice as a bid'ah, or innovation, that contradicts Islamic principles. Despite these differing views, the researcher identifies that the Mandi Safar tradition is valued by many as it significantly strengthens social bonds among villagers. This study aims to provide a comprehensive description of the efforts undertaken by the Baru village community to preserve the Mandi Safar tradition as a means to cultivate social care and solidarity among its citizens. Employing a qualitative research design with a case study approach, the findings reveal that the Mandi Safar tradition is executed in two key stages: (a) the Preparation stage, which entails gathering necessary materials such as paper, pencils, banana leaves, coconut leaves, and food; and (b) the Execution stage, which encompasses the journey to the ritual site, recitation of prayers, communal meals, and the Mandi Safar ritual itself. The Mandi Safar tradition embodies essential social values, including togetherness, affection, and harmony. These values play a crucial role in reinforcing kinship ties within the community and fostering a spirit of social caring among villagers. This study highlights the enduring significance of the Mandi Safar tradition in enhancing communal identity and social cohesion within the Baru village community.

Abstract

Language plays a crucial role in social communication, including on digital platforms such as YouTube. One of the most popular podcasts in Indonesia, "Close The Door" by Deddy Corbuzier, often showcases various forms of adherence to and violations of linguistic politeness. This study aims to describe the forms of adherence to and violations of politeness in the podcast using a cyberpragmatic perspective. The data source for this research is the video podcast "Close The Door," featuring a dialogue between Ivan Gunawan and Deddy Corbuzier titled "Cowo Kok Tas Cewe." This study employs a qualitative descriptive method, with data collection techniques conducted through documentation, observation, and note-taking. The data analysis procedure follows the stages outlined by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana, which include data collection, data condensation, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Additionally, data triangulation in this study is based on sources, techniques, and time. The results indicate that violations of politeness in the podcast often take the form of jokes that lack respect for conversation partners and the use of vulgar language, reflecting a lack of attention to linguistic politeness.

The objectives of this study are to describe the meaning of the kinship system in Bugis society in the marriage custom, second to describe the inheritance system of the perception of To Ugi in Wajo district, South Sulawesi, and third to describe the nickname “To Ugi” in the kinship system. A descriptive qualitative approach was used to investigate data sources by describing the symptoms arising from the meaning of To Ugi in the Bugis Society in Wajo District, Tempe. Research data were collected from observation and interviews with four informants, one of whom was a Wajo traditional leader. The results showed that the Bugis-Wajo kinship system found 10 series of traditional processions, forbidden marriages, the main standards of the family that have to be followed when people enter marriage, and the stages before marrying based on the word assiajingeng. Kinship in Wajo is classified as parental by following the social system of the father and mother or the lineage of both parents. The 2:1 cultural inheritance sharing system between men and women benefits those who do not understand the kinship laws in Wajo Regency. The contribution of this study is that it opens up further opportunities for exploration into the relationship between language, social structure, and the formation of social classes within traditional communities, as well as the potential integration of local wisdom into character education and sustainable development.

Abstract

The implementation of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in higher education learning materials has become increasingly crucial in preparing students for complex real-world challenges. This study examines the HOTS components in the evaluation instruments of the 2016 Civics Education textbook published by the Directorate General of Higher Education, Research, and Technology. The research specifically focuses on analyzing thinking levels based on Bloom's taxonomy, including analyzing (C4), evaluating (C5), and creating (C6) capabilities. This descriptive qualitative research employed a systematic literature study method. The data collection involved comprehensive analysis of evaluation instruments from each chapter of the textbook, using predetermined HOTS criteria and indicators. The analysis process included content analysis, categorization, and verification of thinking skill levels. The findings reveal varied distribution of HOTS components in the evaluation instruments: critical thinking (35.6%), creative thinking (11.8%), problem-solving (28.7%), and decision-making (25.3%). Furthermore, the analysis of thinking levels showed the following distribution: C4 (41.4%), C5 (19.5%), and C6 (38%). These results indicate a need for more balanced distribution of HOTS components, particularly in strengthening creative thinking and evaluative abilities in the textbook's evaluation instruments.

Abstract

This study aims to discuss the International Youth Camp Program as a way to empower diversity in the educational field. Since empowering diversity among learners would bring a positive education atmosphere, such empowerment is essential for learners to adapt and embrace differences found in the classroom. This study used a qualitative method with research data collected from interviews and observation, involving 21 students from 13 countries attending the International Youth Camp in a private university in West Java. The interview results showed that the International Youth Camp helped students of different cultures and languages exchange ideas. Furthermore, the observation results imply that this event has successfully promoted diversity for both Indonesian and international students by introducing their cultures to each other. This program also provides opportunities for both Indonesian and international students to exchange and collaborate on their knowledge, language, culture, and character development. Therefore, this program contributes to the field of intercultural education by offering empirical evidence on how international youth programs can serve as effective platforms for fostering global citizenship, promoting inclusive values, and developing students’ intercultural competence. It underscores the significance of experiential, dialogue-based learning in enhancing students’ openness, adaptability, and respect for diversity in higher education settings.

Abstract

Limited access and a strong patriarchal culture in rural Indonesia remain efficacious factors that limit women's choices and participation in the public domain. The reality of gender injustice many women experience has been at the heart of feminist struggles since the 19th century. With a qualitative approach, this study aims to identify and analyze feminist values implemented by the "Kartini Corner" program in Kendalrejo Village, Pemalang Regency (Central Java). Data collected through documentation and literature studies were analyzed using Nancy Fraser's feminist framework: recognition, redistribution, collective action (solidarity), and women's empowerment. The study demonstrates that "Kartini Corner" was able to facilitate women's aspirations and participation through their active and meaningful involvement both as participants and committee members. The series of activities in this program manifested the strategy of implementing gender mainstreaming, which in this case was integrated with the Sustainable Village Development Goals (SDGs Desa). This study makes a significant contribution to the contextual feminist discourse in rural Indonesia by presenting an analysis based on Nancy Fraser’s feminist theory within a local community program. In addition, the research provides empirical evidence that local initiatives such as Kartini Corner can serve as a means of social transformation that empowers rural women to actively participate in the public sphere.

Abstract

Leo Tolstoy (1828–1910) is widely recognized as one of the most influential figures in Russian literature, whose works have had a lasting impact on the global literary canon. This study focuses on a critical analysis of two of his early novels, Kazak dan Penyerbuan, composed during Tolstoy’s service in the Caucasus. Despite their seemingly slow narrative progression, these works employ a deliberate pacing that reflects both the existential stillness of military life and the moral introspection characteristic of Tolstoy’s evolving philosophy. This paper addresses the problem of how Tolstoy articulates the ideals of peace and morality within the structure of narrative and character development in these early works. Utilizing a close reading method combined with historical-literary contextualization, the study identifies three major elements: Tolstoy’s thematic construction of peace, the mediation of moral reflection through dialogue and narrative events, and his technique of narrative immersion. By situating Kazak and The Invasion within the broader historical context of 19th-century Russian imperial expansion into the Caucasus, this analysis contributes to a deeper understanding of Tolstoy’s early engagement with ethical and existential questions. The study proposes that these early texts not only anticipate Tolstoy’s later moral philosophy but also offer a foundational perspective for mapping Tolstoy’s evolving literary and ideological trajectory within Russian literature.
