Abstract

This research paper aims to investigate the contrasts in the relationship of two racial entities in the United States, African American maids and the White socialites, particularly in the segregation era (1960s). Findings and criteria of analysis were drawn from a movie called The Help (2011) with Peirce’s semiotic approach and descriptive method. Based on the observation during movie screening and literature review, the root problem happening between two groups is the disparity of previledge and socioeconomic status based on race. Besides the intangible background, signs of segregation also appeared in the movie, such as Confederate Flag of Mississippi, separate toilets, and the attires. That context demonstrates that the white socialites have stronger position over the African American maids in which the white socialites appeared as the rich and good-looking employers who treated the maids with unequal acts and accusations. This situation has not ceased to exist in real life as in American society especially when it is supported by hate and, also, government policy.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the extent of the application of traditional Karo ornaments which include the application, shape changes, and color changes in the Karo Regent Office building in Karo Regency. The population in this study were all ornaments found in the Karo Regent Office Building (total sampling) of 14 types of ornaments. This study uses a descriptive qualitative analysis approach based on the study of symbolic and Karo cultural philosophies. The results explained that the shape, color, and placement of the gerga no longer follow the rules based on the traditional placement of Karo. In Karo culture, gerga occupy structured fields in the traditional Karo house starting from the bottom (profane), middle (semi-sacred), and the top (sacred). In the upper part of the Karo Regent Office Building (Ayo-Ayo) the placement of the Gerga is in accordance with the Karo Traditional rules but not in the Derpih (wall) and Melmelen (kitchen bar) sections as well as the shape (proportion) changes and inconsistent color placement. . The conclusion of this study is that the ornaments that exist in the Karo Regent Office Building are used as decoration and aesthetic needs (profane) as a cultural identity of Karo, with the finding of a discrepancy in the placement of Karo ornaments based on the principle of ornamentation in the traditional Karo house. It is recommended that the placement, shape and color follow the ornamental principles found in the Karo traditional house.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was an effect of CTL learning and conventional learning with early mathematics abilities on the understanding of the fourth grade students of SD Negeri 117471 Sibargot. The research method used was an experiment using pre-test and post-test control group design. Hypothesis testing in this study used a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) test with a significance level of α = 0.05. The results of this study indicate that the sig. for CTL (MP₁) and Conventional Learning (MP₂) is the result of tcount -2.911> ttable 2.002, so it can be concluded that H1 is accepted, which means that there is a significant influence of the learning model on understanding mathematical concepts; sig value. for Mathematical Initial Ability (KAM) with the result of tcount -6.434> ttable 2.002 shows that the mean of the first group, namely high initial ability (KAMt) is higher than the second group, namely low initial ability (KAMr), so it can be concluded that H2 is accepted, which means that there is an influence. significant initial ability to understand mathematical concepts; sig value. for the effect of the Learning Method and KAM simultaneously on understanding mathematical concepts with the results of the value of Fcount 24.933> Ftable 3.16. So it can be concluded that H3 is accepted, which means that there is an effect of learning methods and Early Ability simultaneously on understanding mathematical concepts.
