Abstract

Most of the Indonesian students depend on the teachers in learning English. University students do not understand the language learning strategies properly. The purpose of this research is to investigate language learning strategies used by social collage students. The participants were 125 students of economy faculty at the University of Muhammadiyah Palembang. The tool used was a questionnaire of SILL. The data collected were analyzed statistically. The results showed that students were indeed using metacognitive (M=4.11), memory (M=3.88), social (M=3.81), cognitive (M=3.66), affective (M=3.62), and compensation strategies (M=3.49). While both males and females used metacognitve strategies with the statistically (M=4.15) for females and (M=4.05) for males. Metacognitive reading strategy is the dominant used by the students. Metacognitive strategies have a strong and important impact on effective students learning English as a second language. Besides, students integrate both direct and indirect learning strategies. This brings an additional field of research to demonstrate the construction of LLS guidance on the gender and level of students’ education.

They need to read materials that can catalyze critical thinking skill in critical reading. Also, listening materials can serveas an additional material to enrich the reading materials on the basis of sources of authentic materials

Abstract

This research is a study of improving students’ ability in reading comprehension. The aim was to find out whether the use of Herringbone technique would bring a significant difference in teaching reading comprehension through Recount text, compared with the result before the students being treated. The study was conducted in the tenth grade students of SMA N 4 Pematangsiantar. The research method used was the experimental design, where the Experimental group was the PMIA 3 class, and the PMIA 2 class as the control class. Both of the classes had 34 students in each of it. The data were obtained through pre-test, treatment and post test. The pre-test was held to know the students’ basic ability or score before treatment was given. Meanwhile, the post test was held to know the students’ achievement and significant effect after the students were taught using Herringbone technique. Finding of the research showed that both groups had a significant improvement in their reading ability after being treated and passed the KKM. The Control group, which the pre-test score was 60, made an improvement shown in their post-test score in amount of 70,44. The experimental group, the group which the researcher treated the Herringbone technique to them, had a higher improvement than the control group. The average score of pre-test in this group was about 54,41 where then being improved up to 78,97. The score of t-test (3,981) was higher than t-table (1,668) at the level of significance 5% for two tailed test, so Null Hypothesis is rejected and Alternative Hypothesis is accepted.

Abstract

Abstract: Motivation is a paramount aspect in the learning process. It is a drive that encourages students to achieve better learning results. In the process of accomplishing the learning task, students might encounter difficulties that can demotivate them. Therefore, motivation-regulation is needed to maintain students’ motivation in completing the task. Many studies have been done to investigate master students’ academic reading. Yet, little research has explored master students' motivation-regulation in academic reading. This paper sought to investigate the role of motivation-regulation in master students’ academic reading. It employed mixed-method research where the researchers distributed questionnaires and conducted an interview to collect the data. The research took place at the English Education Master’s Program of Sanata Dharma University from February to April in 2020. There were 14 master students involved in this study. The findings showed that there were three roles of motivation-regulation in master students’ academic reading: (1) Students had high self-efficacy in academic reading which enable them to accomplish the academic reading task; (2) they had an intrinsic interest in academic reading which empowered them to maintain their motivation in the process of academic reading; (3) they had positive emotions towards academic reading. The researchers concluded that the students in this study are capable of regulating their motivation in an academic reading task. This study proposed two suggestions for future research. Keywords: motivation, self-regulated learning, motivation-regulation, academic reading

Abstract

Elaborating Critical Thinking Skills in TEFL Methodology subject has become one of the 21st century trends, prioritized in the pedagogic process of language courses. Lecturers as facilitators, motivators, boosters, co-learners and inspirational model are the foundation of innovative creativity to adapt and modify comprehensively, and integrate them in their teaching projects contextually; while, the learners themselves play as the active target of learning agents. This modern TEFL Methodology critically makes use of either authentic texts or real texts that are also confronted by the need to approach texts critically. This was revealed in this research, focused on the learners’ activities that enthusiastically engage critical thinking skills in their learning process. It runs actively, innovatively, creatively, dialogically, democratically and in a critical and interactive atmosphere. The importance of applying critical thinking skills in language learning process can empower learners to maximize the objective of TEFL Methodology learning target both oral and written in accordance with their social context. Learners enter in any task using the target language which contains the elements such as identification, investigation, analysis and problem solving then they must think critically. These kinds of communicative task are commonplace for they engage the learners in authentic communication settings. This is impressive and meaningful for the learners. Thus, recommending success in TEFL Methodology subject – as in life - requires effective use of language practically along with some measure of critical thinking.
