Abstract

Amid the growing coalescence between the religion and ecology movement, religion and science, spirituality and ecology, the voice of Muslim thinking that care for the earth and its people is rising. While the Islamic position on the environment is not well-represented in the eco-theology discourse, it advances an environmental imaginary which shows how faith can be harnessed as a movement for social change. This article will draw upon field research which synthesized the Islamic ecological spirituality (eco-spirituality) from sacred texts, traditions, and contemporary thought, and illustrated how this spirituality is enlivened in the educational landscape of Islam. Knowledge of the relationship between human beings and the natural world, of the function upon which the nature was created, and of the function right living, is essential in this educational project, and the global eco-Islamic movement toward the eco-friendly community to environment. Despite the manifestation of environmental education activities in educational establishment, which are generally patterned Islamic education today is not representative of the holistic, integrated, and comprehensive educational philosophy of Islam. As contemporary world today, such as the environmental question, act as an impetus to encourages, to develop even to build a pedagogy which endeavours to be true to the religious traditions, values, and ethics of Islam, while also displaying the transformation of Islamic faith. Of course, many of them based their life, and lifestyle decisions on the teachings of Islam, and are showing the relevance of traditional resources and greatest life challenges facing humanity today; namely “save our nature”.

Abstract

Literacy is a tool of communication which could help people to know the natural surroundings without any real experience, but they could know the events of the past. As a relic, the literacy cannot be ignored. For example, the literacy of Arabic-Malay is a tool to write Malay language for the people who live in the archipelago. With the help of the Arab-Malay literacy, Moslem sholars, kiais, and teachers are able to produce real works that characterizes the traditional writing of citizens. The works of the past people implemented in Arabic-Malay and Malay are called Malay manuscripts. The number of Malay manuscripts is innumerable and has been saved by 28 countries in the world. The Malay manuscripts will not contribute to society nowadays if they are not read and the people do not understand their contents. Therefore, it is important to do a research for the existence of the Arab-Malay literacy in the archipelago. Moreover, the deep research is needed to know its role to read the Malay manuscripts which are ones of the intellectual treasures of the archipelago till the manuscripts can be understood by the people now. It is very necessary to do because the Arab-Malay literacy as a part of the archipelago culture has been "forgotten" for a long time. In studying the Arabic-Malay literacy existence and its role, the writer prefers using literatures. It means that this article focuses on library research because the analysis is directed to the books and writings related to the discussion.

Abstract

There were various explications of the concept of tawhid presented by Muslim scholars in the past, especially among mutakallimun and falasifah, but most of them emphasized on the unity of essence, attribute activities. Ibn Taymiyyah is one of the most celebrated Muslim theologians and regarded by some as mujaddid or reformer on Islamic theological thought. His reformative thought could be discerned from his concept oftawhid, which is deemed unique and worthy of further studies. However, it is not only of his concept that he was regarded as reformer, but also his framework of theological studies. The method employed in this research is literary studies, yet it is also supported by historical, descriptive, inductive and critical analytical method. The finding of this research is that Ibn Taimiyyah’s concept of tawhidconsists of unity of God, unity of Allah worship and the unity of essence and attribute. The first means the belief existence of God as the Creator; the second is the manifestation of belief in the form worship by heart, speech and good deed; the last one is belief in the perfect attributes of Allah based on the Qur’an and Sunnah. He also emphasized that one who does not believe in these three kinds of tawhid, or believe only in the unity of God could not save from the Hell. Regarding the framework, Ibn Taymiyyah restricts that the theological discourses should commit to the Qur’an and Hadits, rely on rational capacity of man, rebuff kalam interpretation and prever revelation from reason.

Abstract

This paper is an exposition of Ibn Sina’ s concept  Wa> jib al-W uju> d(Necessary Existence),a concept of God derived from or modified out of   Aristotle’ s natural theology .Since it deviates from  Aristotle’ s philosophy ,it considerably distinct from the Greek philosophical tradition. Unlike Aristotle whose theological framework departs from physic, Ibn Sina delineates the concept of God from pure metaphysical approach consisting of ontological and cosmological arguments. From this delineation Ibn Sina has successfully solved  Aristotle’ s problem of God knowledge and change, and that is by positing that God knew something other than Himself but it does not imply change in His essence since His knowledge is unbounded by time.Be that as it ma y ,this philosophical concept is subject to further examination from theological perspectives .However, the term Wa> jib al-W uju> d is a key concept for the explication of the existence of God, but the term itself is not assumption, but the goal to be investigated.  Although Necessary Existence is only ontological concept it is used in his various way of proving God’ s existence, whether in cosmological argument or other argument. Interestingly ,since all depend on the key concept of   ‘necessity’,the proof that begins from the causality does not end in the First Cause but on Wajib al-W ujud, an end that seems to be incompatible with the beginning .

Abstract

So far, studies focusing on the pattern of Ibn Rusyd’s thought are less performed. Whereas, according to Muhammad Abduh, it is important  to intensively study it, so that there is a balance with his brilliant thought  of philosophy. In this research, the author tries to analyze the patterns of philosophical thought of Islamic jurisprudence of Ibn Rusyd in his book “Bidayah al-Mujtahid”. This short study records many characteristics of his genuineIslamic jurisprudence thoughts namely the presence of strong interrelation and intermediation among jurists, by comparing various opinions of the scholars, followed with istidlal, to the al-khuruj min al-khilaf and tarjih concept. Although earning many praises from many scholars such as Ibn Taymiyya, Ibn Qayyim and Al-Syatibi as contained in his work al-Muwafaqat, however, he also suffered from number of critics due to his preference to the opinions of Imam Malik. Interestingly, Bidayah al-Mujtahid was written by Ibn Rusyd as a critique against Al-Wajiz of Al-Ghazali which is according to Ibn Rusyd it inclines to only one school of thought of Islamic jurisprudence namely Imam Syafi’i. Furthermore, he did also to the same thing to the philosophy of Al-Ghazali in his famous work, Tahafut al-Tahafut.

Abstract

This article discusses naskh in the studies of the Qur’an (‘Ulûm al-Qur’ân). The research focus begins on different understandings and interpretations on stoning punishment for adulterers who had married, based on the story of a Prophet’s companion, Umar ibn Khattab, who said that it was a part of the Qur’an until it then removed from the Qur’an, even though the law is still in force. This story is often used as an example of a naskh criteria that the script had been removed from the Qur’an, even though the law remains in force which were frequently targeted as a form of negligence and mistakes that (probably) there are parts of the Qur’an forgotten, missed or even disappeared when the collecting and codifying the Qur’an in the Ṣaḥâbah (Companions) period since the era of Abu Bakar up to Utsman ibn ‘Affan. These diverse understandings and various thinking related to naskh in al-Qur’an are awkward things which are strongly influenced by orientalism mind and thinking that then come to the surface until, in turn, led to doubt on the validity of the Qur’an that exist today until arousing some efforts to reconstruct and reorder the Qur’an based on corresponding period. This article is quietly concerned to criticize and straighten naskh understanding of the Qur’an with reference to the main reference (mother books) in the tradition of ‘Ulûm al-Qur’ân (Turâts) which are valid and can be justified scientifically.

Abstract

Orientalism is a field of study that deals with Eastern and Islamic studies as it object of study. Being a discipline of knowledge it must have specific theory and methodology or framework of study. However, since it emerged in Western intellectual tradition, it is permeated by Western worldview. In other words, being a science orientalism is value laden. This paper tries to prove the correlation between the traditions of orientalism, where religious, cultural and political melieu permeated their framework, with the study of the Qur’an. The finding suggests that the framework of orientalis in their study of the Qur’an could be resumed into four: trying to employ previous sacred text as their standard of Qur’anic studies, preferring the textual studies rather than narration, questioning the process of compilation, examining the content of the Qur’an using their own logic and experience, and finally employing the Biblical methodology. Those frameworks inevitably has resulted incongruencies that could lead one to be misunderstanding the Qur’an

Abstract

When looking at the teachings of sufism, the journey to seek spirituality is often colored by reproducing dzikr and doing seclusion. This gives the view that the spirituality in sufism rely heavily on individualism and the release of any social bonds. Hence, followers of sufism should put a distance between them and their surrounding community and even their family to avoid negative influences during their self-purification. From here, a later view emerges that the teachings of sufism tend to be distant and indifferent to any social, cultural, economic, and political issues and do not have a positive contribution to the welfare of society. This vie w is not in accordance with the views of some followers of sufism. This view can be refuted by proposing one of the main concepts in the Naqshbaniyyah order, namely the principle of khalwat dar anjuman (seclusion in the crowd). By examining some of the writings that became the reference of this order to understand its meaning, it can be found that the concept is interpreted in various ways and has a wide spectrum of applications. From the watchfulness of dzikr which signifies the pressence of the heart with God even when in crowded places until the obligation of a sufi to interact actively with his society. Spirituality and social activism are not contradictory, but they fill and support each other. It can be seen later that this teaching can offer a concept to be a model of social spiritual life that is compatible to be applied in modern times to achieve and maintain one’s spirituality and at the same time to contribute to the benefit of those around him.

Abstract

An important problem in the discourse of Islamic political study is the problem of decision-making process within the political order of a country. Does Islam follow a view of absolutism in the decision making process. How does representative institutions decision become a constitutional decision. What is the form of consultation can be done to get the best decision. Almost all forms of Islamic political thought agree to make syûrâ (consultation system, consulting) as a tool to create a state decision. Yet, the debate is on the problems that can be decided or determined through the mechanism of the syûrâ. For Ibn Taymiyyah, people are the main owners of state power. Determination of choice for power players and the way of power are completely in the hands of the people. They are the owners of the leadership in general. They are entitled to elect and dismiss the leader, as they also decide the broad outlines of state policy that must be done by him. Moreover, the authority outlines is not on the leader, but on the whole people. However, the syûrâ is not like the promoted Western liberal democracy. It has its characteristics, traits and principles.
