Abstract

This paper is an attempt to analyse the development of the sufistic idea in its early period by referring to the thought of Abu Bakr al-Kalabazi. It treats tasawuf not merely as codes of practices and rituals, but as a system of knowledge and episteme. The paper tries to show that what al-Kalabazi and other sufis like him have done is to expose intellectually the meaning and message of the spiritual side of Islam in a way that makes it possible to become an objective and integrated paradigm. The thought of al-Kalabazi to be more precise and is looked-upon here not as an independent paradigm but as part of the larger system of tasawuf developed over time by the sufis. Treating al- Kalabazi as a successor of Abu Nasr al-Sarraj, the paper argues that the thought of these two sufis complements each other, and that what the former has attempted to do was to fill the gap that the latter has left. The paper in other words, is interested in, 1) how the notion of epistemic continuity is reflected in the thought of al-Kalabazi, and 2) how al-Kalabazi may be understood as forming a chain within the larger intellectual tradition of tasawuf; a chain that may be regarded as new and unique in it’s own context. In this way, one may understand -it is hoped- that the process of becoming in which tasawuf is undergoing as a system of knowledge is never-ending, and that in every single sufi a transfer of discursive meaning is indeed inevitable.

Abstract

This article  describes various  tricks  in  learning and  teaching Arabic  language. There are  four  important aspects:  listening, speaking,  reading and writing. These four aspects are integral language activities which are practiced simultaneously . Moreover, it is said  that there  is nothing can be spoken before  listening, there  is nothing can be read before speaking, and there  is nothing can be written before  reading. Meanwhile,  in practice, a  language learner should start with a lot of practical exercises and not use translation method. These exercises can be  in  the form of  structuring,  repeating, and communicating. However, the aspect of teacher takes very  important point. Without a good teacher, a good subject, system, and method are useless. Method is more important than subject, teacher  is more  important  than method, and the soul of the teacher  is the most  important. Beside  those, creating  a milieu  conducive  to  language  learning  is sine  qua non  and fundamental element for the  improvement of Arabic  language.

Abstract

This article aims to delineate al-Baqillani’s response to the Rafidite Syi’ites’ claim on the invalidity of the variant readings of the Qur’an. As an Asy‘arite, al-Baqillani was able to disprove their claims dealing with the status of the variant readings of the Qur’an in the history of Islamic civilization. His arguments are also relevant to reject orientalists’s notion who are in line with those Syi’ites on the related topic. This issue has close relationship with the process of the compilation of the Qur’an and the validity of the Muṣḥaf of Utsman, since the Syi’ites rejected it and promoting their own version as claimed by their authoritative figures. The authors conclude that al-Baqillani’s defence on the matter provides number of evidence that the existing of the Qur’an is the one which was collected by Utsman ibn Affan. Al-Baqillani was also able to disprove the views that the variant readings of the Qur’an are merely ijtihâd and metaphorical statements. He clarified that the variant readings are valid and has been practiced by a number of companions and approved by the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. His views on this issue were also supported by other scholars like al-Qurtubi and al-Zarqani. In this research, the approach that has been applied is textual analysis, using descriptive and analytical methods to investigate and analyze primary sources related to the pertinent topic. It also adopts the historical method to scrutinize several events on the subject within the context of the history of Islam.

Abstract

The presence of madani society discourse in the Muslim world in the last of 20th  century and the beginning of 21st  century has fulfilled the minimum of the study of social philosophy in Islamic Philosophy. This phenomenon has brought research questions: what is a madani society and what is its contribution to the philosophy of education. Through a historical research, the data has collected using documents and has analyzed using domain and reflective analysis. The research has found that madani society is the opposite of barbaric and primitive society, and not the opposite of religious society, responsible to build social order and defend public interests, and based on some basic values: civility, respect of differences, peaceful management of conflict and social control, autonomy and self-regulating, and social solidarity. Based on such values, social relations in ‘madani society’ are conducted by respecting the individual and communal rights, respecting egalitarianism and improvement of human dignity, living together fully tolerant and solid, respecting difference and managing peacefully conflict with dialogue, without truth claim and discrimination, controlling public administration and maintaining accountable government, and regulating trans ethnic public affairs with autonomy and self-reliance through rules and conventions. Moreover, the discourse contribution to the philosophy of education is that the nature of education is transmitting basic Islamic values to the society members in order to develop as Muslim civilized society who is also responsible to build an autonomous social order and defend public interests, full of solidarity.

Abstract

Scholarly interest in the thought and teachings of Shâh Waliyyullâh adDihlawî has increased in recent years –not surprisingly, given the richness and profundity of his writings. This article explores the mystical dimension of prophecy emerging from Shâh Waliyyullâh’s insights and remarks, focusing on the key concepts such as the World of Images (‘Âlam al-Mithâl), the Highest Council of Angels (al-Mala’ al-A‘lâ) and the Holy Enclave (Haz} îrat al-Quds), which help explain how, from the sûfî point of view, prophecy is possible. The main task of a prophet is to set up order in social, political and economic life of people. The prophet receives revelation which enables him to communicate the Divine Message to mankind containing all that is necessary for their welfare both in this life and the next according to the Divine Plan.

Abstract

This is a special note on the article written by Fauzan Saleh entitled Kita Masih Murji’ah: Mencari Akar Teologi Pemahaman Umat Islam Indonesia published in Tsaqafah Volume 7, No. 2, October 2009. The author notes that the article could plunge Muslims to the wrong conception. Fauzan begins his article on Caliph Uthman’s nepotism when designating Amr bin Ash as governor of Egypt, Mua’wiyah as governor of Sham and Sa’ad bin Abi Waqas as governor of Iraq and Persia. Further this article notes concerning the definition of Ahl al- Sunnah wa al-Jama’ah. In addition, the author sees Fauzan does not fully understand this concept. Thus, because he classified both Maturidist and Asy’arist only into this group, without explaining their true set of belief. Actually the truth about Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama’ah is the groups who have unanimity in beliefs, traditions and the status of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) and the the very righteous people among Muslims in Islam. They are the prophet’s companions and Tabi’in (followers), and the schoolars who followed their guidance, and their way in terms of faith, words, and deeds until the Day of Judgment. From this point of view, the criticism persists about the actors a great sin whereby this article parsed differences between Ahlusunah and Murji’ah. According to the author, Fauzan has been on failure when he drew a hasty conclusion at the similarity belief of Murji’ah and Ahlusunah, whereas Ahlusunah’s creed is just a continuation of Murji’ah’s. As clearly written in Fauzan’s conclusions of the article, despite Murji’ah creed is no longer known at this time, but this concept still remains sustainable in Islamic theology.

Abstract

The first International Conference on Islamic Economics was held in Makkah, in 1976. Economists, jurists and scholars met together to discuss issues of Muslim ummah. However, there was many books written related to Islamic economics in the history of Islamic civilization, especially in the period of Abbasid caliphate. The fact, development of knowledge in Islamic medieval had established the epistemology of Islamic economics itself. Moreover, the epistemology is a study of the theory of knowledge, the source of knowledge, the application of knowledge and limitation of knowledge. Therefore, this paper aims to explore the contribution of earlier Muslim thinkers to the source of Islamic economics and to identify the epistemology of Islamic economics as proposed by the Muslim thinkers in medieval period. As a result, this paper will propose the epistemology of Islamic economics by integrating Islamic heritage and modern economics that is not conflict with Islamic principles and values. To achieve its objectives; this study employs qualitative research by applying content and descriptive analysis. The finding of this study is that the earlier Muslim thinkers have contributed to the construction of epistemology in Islamic economics. Then, to construct the genuine of Islamic economics, tawhid must be put as a core of Islamic economic epistemology that directs the sources of knowledge which are rooted firstly from revealed and then rational knowledge by using appropriate methods.

Abstract

Although sophisticated discoveries in the feld of science and technology have been found, human beings are still continuing to face the problems of life, such as injustice, social imbalance, arbitrariness, and greed. They forget that religion is still needed to solve these problems. In Islam, al-Qur’an and its teachings are the answer for these problems. This article tries to prove it through an analyzing Muhammad Abdullah Diraz’s thought. As a Muslim scholar, Diraz is able to integrate Islamic and Western knowledge. His thoughts have a strong characteristic in combining the naqli and aqli, fqh nas} and fqh wâqi’. According to Diraz one of the miracles of the Qur’an is that its sharias are not owned by other rules, in terms of methods, concepts, and contents. One of the main points of miracles of the Qur’anic laws is its ability to unify the two things that always contradict. The laws of the Qur’an are gentle but frm, fair but loving, simple but flexible, idealistic but realistic. All combined in a suitable and balanced portion. These features are what Diraz attempts to present in his studies of al-Qur’an. Diraz’s theory is very appropriate to be a foothold in offering the laws of al-Qur’an to the people of the world who are in confusion looking for a way out of their problems.

Abstract

This article contains a study of Kim Knott which gives a new offer in religious study. This is due to many universities store a number of constraints surrounding the study of religion. In addition, the occurrence of methodology stagnant in the students circumstance in applying explorative studies about religion. In this study, Knott tries to take eliminate the subjectivity element by aparting two basic problems; between emic perspective appeared from the studies of insider, and ethical perspective from outsider. In the end, Knott divides roles conceptions in empowering the social religious interconections into four elements; the pure participant, the observer as participant, the participant as observer, dan the pure observer. However, this pattern turns out to save a serious problem in the benchmark objectivity. Because the issue is whether the observer from outsider is excatly objective, reliable, and has scientific validity seen from the view of insider. In this regard, Knott tries to put both frameworks in the rapprochement method. This approach is an intersubjective solution to give a position of observer in the margin of appreciation as the border line between insider-outsider. With this approach, the religious study is expected will be more objective and distant from the subjectivity element.
