Abstract

Complying with Corporate Governance (CG) standards is not mandatory but with collapse of many financial institutions, compliance with high standards of CG in banking operation has become a necessity. This is due to the fact that many banks and companies worldwide collapsed as a result of poor corporate governance practices such as Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI) 1991, Barings Bank 1995, Lehman Brothers 2008, Enron 2001, WorldCom 2001, etc. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to examine and ascertain whether present level of CG standards practiced by Islamic banks is adequate to prevent or safeguard the banks from collapsing. The approach of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of board and the various board committees utilizing data published in financial statement of the selected banks. The methodology used in this paper is analytical descriptive to reach accurate results and as more appropriate approach with this research. The study finds out that the selected banks comply with CG standards adopted; however such compliance does not mean that the board, the board committees will be constantly reliable. Therefore, instilling the Islamic values such as the concepts of iḥsân, honesty, and accountability is paramount to prevent CG failures and protect/safeguard the banks from collapsing.

Abstract

The Western’s conception of  values, morals and ethics are so different with Islamic conception. In fact, there is difference about it between western scholars. These is a consequence from secularization that spread upon the whole Europe  after  their  people’s  believe  of  church’s  conductiveness  disappeared. This secularization impacts to the separation between religion’s doctrines and life activities as politic, education even to the marriage. Religion has space its self that different  with  space  of  non-religion. This paper  has  a purpose to describes western scholar’s thoughts about values and moralities chronologically, starting from medieval centuries when Churches have the power of high legitimacy in western society until renaissance era and then describing about glorious era that the western scholar’s thoughts still influences the concept of values in this century.

Abstract

Nowadays, M. Quraish Shihab is a well known authoritative intellectual (ulama) of Qur’anic Tafsir in Indonesia and even in South East Asia. Started from his early age, he consistently devotes his life for this field. As the result, all his scientific works are solely based on Quranic studies. From this intensity of works, Quraish then formulates a tafsir method considered relevant to nowadays context. This paper is aimed to explore the method used by Quraish Shihab in Quranic tafsir. His method in Quranic tafsir is mostly mawdhu’I, even though he has finished a complete tafsir book for 30 Quranic sections which is arranged in tahlili. In his maudhu’I interpretation, Quraish prefers an ijtima’I style of tafsir, and considers the importance of linguistic approach. The latter is considered important to make the interpreter not forcing his interpretation outside of linguistic meaning as it will lead to the exploitation of Al-Quran. This linguistic approach is then combined with a view that Al-Quran is a unity and cannot be separated. In addition, Quraish also emphasizes on proportionality (munasabah) between one verse to another and between one surah to another.

Abstract

The principles of salafiah approach can be summarized into three distinguished characteristics: first is comprehension, second is authenticity or originality and not imitation (taqlid), while the last is improvement or progress and not conservatism. Salafiah is in fact not inconsistent with the progress and improvement, while their calling for returning to the original and main sources is approved by the religion and not in contradiction with the reality of Muslim. Moreover, it is a valid approach in achieving a better life in this world and hereafter. The objectives of salafiah are to purify the faith from the heresies (bid’ah), to educate Islamic personality, to open human mind to accept all the new in the fields of the experimental sciences, and to establish the faith from its sources which is far from the emerging narrow-minded religion sects recently. Finally, the salafist open widely to the experimental sciences, to the uses of scientific results, to the great invention in industrial sector and to the modern technology as they are very useful to support and sustain the Islamic teachings in the context of a more beautiful life with a less difficulties.

Abstract

As a cultural movement, globalization has presented the differences that tear do wn the totality and unity of values and beliefs .Global culture is characterized by the integration of local culture into the global order.  Accordingly ,various foreign cultural values become the bases of the formation of sub-culture that stands alone with the freedom of expression. As a cultural movement, it brings the differences that under mine the totality and the unity of values and religious beliefs. This climate conduci ve to these different ways of life and then spawns a widespread individualization process, which turns man away from the general context. This massive shift can be seen in the so-called “privatization of religion”, the process of individualization in the appreciation and religious practices. Revitalization of religion is needed to restore the basic values of religion that have been secularized. Religion must come back as a legitimate sovereign social values and piety . This sovereignty of religion should be structured as a strategy for revitalizing religion in the lives of individuals and social piety .  Thus, religion as a sovereign authority regulates individual piety personally and socially .However, the sovereignty of religion should give a wide freedom for individuals to perform the function of religion in accordance with the present context.

Abstract

The integration of ethics and business or business and ethics can mean to impose religious norms upon business, to post ethical code for business, to revise the economic system and law, and to improve the skills of  managing the demands of ethics from outside parties to seek for safe and so on. It implies that ethics is treated as a separate discipline and would be applied to the business world or to be developed by applying the study of moral issues in the business field. Such understanding will in turn lead to various branches of ethics such as economic ethics, business ethics, management ethics, banking ethics and others. At such levels, associated with this study, the questions are raised whether business and ethics in the Qur’an are separated or integrated; also how the Qur’an gives its perception about business and ethics. In Islam, Al-Quran provides a clear guidance for business vision which is a future business vision which is not only aiming at a short term profit which includes harm but a kind of  profit which is essentially good and having a good effect at its end. In other words, Ethics and Business are an integrated unity. As the result, the business growth in Islam is a function of profit, satisfaction of customer and other factors which cannot be detected and at the same time influencing the business success and the approval of Allah.

Abstract

Mostly, a research about nation ideology is related to a religion. Some people wish the religion becomes foundation for their nation, but others expect the opposite. The first type is optimistic that the religion will be able to help the nation to create a life with justice, prosperity, honesty, respect, unity in diversity, morality, and other sacred values. Therefore, there is no bargaining for integrity between religion and politics. They think religion and politics must be integrated with no exception, including the religion and the politics in Indonesia. The founders of Indonesia had said that the nation has to pay most attention to Moslem people’s privileges as the majority of Indonesian people. Meanwhile, according to the second type, Islam doesn’t have to play its role formally for the nation. It is enough for the religion to affect people’s mindset and their action. By using critical-analysis method, this paper tries to observe how the real process of political thought history including its ideological construction and its theory works together in one side, and how Islamic political thought develops and changes step by step to be profane and secular in another side. Finally, it will be revealed that a nation with a religion as its foundation to manage its government guarantees security, justice, prosperity, welfare, and happiness. It is more promising than a nation which marginalizes religion in managing its national affairs. It is proven by the Islamic history how the Prophet Muhammad had managed Islamic government very well and successfully.

Abstract

The study of Islam among Western thinkers seems not monolithic. In the real of orientalists who use historical analysis to respond Islam with a negative value, such as regarding Islam none more than a Christian heresy. Meanwhile, a positive understanding toward Islam has done by some Islamolog, such as W. Montgomery Watt. The differences are more based on their worldview, phenomenological approach, and interpretations. Then, other understanding of Islam according to sociologists, secularists, humanists, and Western modernists. This article discusses the views of John Wansbrough toward al-Qur’an and the Prophet Muhammad. The study focused on the work of John Wansbrough, entitled “Qur’anic Studies Source and Methods of Scriptural Interpretation”. There are three issues raised in this article: Wansbrough’s view on al-Qur’an, Muhammad prophethood, and Isra’ (nocturnal journey). Regarding to al-Qur’an, wansbrough sees that al-Qur’an has influenced by Jews and Christian, it is fusion of tradition, and even it is the creation of the post-prophetic. Therefore, the critism from other thinkers, such as orientalists as well as coming from Muslims themselves also received a sufficient portion. There are two methods utilized by Wansbrough, historical method and literary analysis. He used historical approach to study the contents of al-Qur’an, and literary analysis to analyze the revealed stories in the Qur’an.

Abstract

Human beings and the complexity they have will never run out to be studied and discussed. So, one of interesting topics of psychology to discuss is concept of ‘fitrah’. The most essential identity of human beings is ‘fitrah’. This issue is more interesting if it is viewed through two perspectives: modern psychology and Islamic psychology. Both kinds of psychology have denied each other. The basis of modern psychology which is separated from element of divinity, makes the conception of ‘fitrah’ dichotomist-secularistic, this is the opposite of Islamic psychology. According to Islam, human beings consist of bodies and rûḥ. Obviously, the two aspects have a specific purpose. At least, Allah states that the purpose of human creation consists of two things, worshipping Him and becoming His khalîfah on this earth. So, the paradigm of Islamic psychology is absolutely related to the element of divinity. God remains the highest subject and influences the paradigm of Islamic psychology which is being tawḥîdiy. For various natural structures they have and the purpose of their creation, human beings are considered to have goodness potency and could do good things. However, external influences still allow them to do evil doings or bad things. This paper discusses this concept of ‘fitrah’ using Islam as a paradigm. The author tries to explain the concept of man as a creature created by fitrah, its physical and psychological structure, and the purpose of human creation and its implications for the psychology paradigm of Islam.
