Abstract

This article addresses issues related to the interfaith dialogue, focusing on the historical context from which it emerged and uncovering the tacit assumptions underlying the idea. It is argued that interfaith dialogue is part and parcel of the Christian mission which seeks to promote inclusivism but also eventually leads to pluralism and relativism. In addition, the article also discusses the three approaches taken by Muslims throughout centuries in dealing with people of other faiths. Abstract

The process of Islamic law legalization in Aceh since 1999 has not been reflecting the goals of the Islamic law application itself. This can be shown by the existing various crimes and violations against Islamic values, such as crime and other immoral conducts. This paper covers at least there elements of revitalization process which according to Soekanto from Friedman can be used as the measurement of  law application effectiveness. That is to say, the enforcement of law requires the execution of all interrelated elements namely rules of  law, law enforcement, and culture of  law. Accordingly, there are three basic points needed to revitalize this Islamic law. First is reforming the rule of acts, second is empowering awareness of  public towards law, and last is to perform law in better condition in term of  justice and prestige. This research uses literature approach by collecting many secondary sources regarding to the topic of  this study. Finally, it concludes that the application of  Islamic law in Aceh truly needs comprehensive and simultaneous revitalization and reform, so the application will actualize values of justice, prosperity and peace for Aceh. However, so far, the enforcement of law has not been optimized due to the conducts of people and law enforcement board which lack reflecting Shari’a values and orders.

Abstract

In recent decades al-Qur’an has been the subject of increasing interest among scholars in the Muslim world as well as in the West. One of the most important issues that most researchers are dealing with pertains to its textualization –that is, how al-Qur’an was transformed from oral tradition into the written text as we have it today; how the Revelation was received and recorded, circulated and passed down from generation to generation, in both the ancient way of memorization and through the methods of reading and writing, as rigorously and accurately as it should be. Although initially the contents of al-Qur’an were widely distributed in the memories of men (i.e. the Prophet and his Companions), they were also written down piecemeal on various materials. The compilation and codification of the al-Qur’an was accomplished under the authority of Caliph Abu Bakr, and the standard codex (al-muṣḥâf al-imâm) was produced during the Caliphate of Utsman in order to bring consensus among the Muslim community both with regard to recitation and orthography (al-Rasm al-‘Utsmâniy). Given its paramount importance in Islam, the history of Qur’anic text will remain of perennial interest to both Muslim and non-Muslim researchers as it could be manipulated, distorted or exploited by those pursuing their own goals for polemical or political reasons. The present article addresses such concerns with a view to separating the wheat from the chaff in the textual history of al-Qur’an.

Abstract

The aims of this article is to investigating the philosophy of human being Ibn Arabi. The philosophy of human being can define as of study the nature of human being, that is the essential characteristic that make up human being and their manifestations and implications. Ibnu Arabi is one of the philosopher that concern to discuss about divine root of human creation. Arabi focuses upon reality itself, and reality is Wujûd, that is, being, existence, or that which is found. Wujûd is the Real or al-haqq, which is another name for God. In itself, Wujûd is concealed and nonmanifest. In other words, it is the Hidden Treasure. However, Wujûd loved to be known, so it created the universe in order to be known. Those who know Wujûd in a full sense are true human beings, or perfect human being (al-insan al-kamil). But people cannot know Wujûd unless wujûd makes itself known to them. It makes itself known by manifesting itself in three basic ways: through the universe, through the self, and through scripture. Scripture, the Qur’an in particular, is the key that opens the door to the universe and the self. Prefect human being is linked between the two diametrically opposed aspects of the unique divine reality. Netheir an animal or an angle, man hovers between the world of corruption and the world of immutability. By virtue of his intermediary position, man becomes a microcosmic reality in which God contemplates Himself in the most eduquate form. Prefect man is that human individual who has perfectly realized that full spiritual potential of the human state, who has realized in himself and his experience the Oneness of Being than underlies all the apparent multiplicity of existence.

Abstract

Islam and civilization can not be separated. Since its presence, Islam has brought the concept and mission of civilization that is inherent in it. Islamic civilization sourced from dîn (religion) which came from the revelation of Allah. That is why the civilization well known as tamaddun or madaniyyah, because it comes from that dîn . Then the high expression tamaddun Islam in the history of human civilization got its place in Yathrib wich later turned into Medina. So, Medina is the place where tamaddun was proclaimed to the whole world as described by Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas. And madaniyyah, according to Muhammad ‘Abduh is more appropriately used to refer to Islamic civilization, because the spiritual aroma-religion (al-dîn) is more pronounced and prominent. Departing from this, this article will break down the details of the meaning and concept of civilization, in which the comparison will be made between the concepts of Western civilization with Islamic civilization. This is necessary in order to provide a clearer distinction of the two concepts of civilization. This article will also review the nature of Islam as dîn and tamaddun-madaniyyah with based on the views of the two great Muslim thinkers, Muhammad ‘Abduh and Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas. In addition will include also a critique of modern Western civilization, which is currently hegemonic civilization.

Abstract

Islamic Boarding has been known as a model of education institution which has a competitiveness either in the tradition of knowledge seen as one of the great tradition or in its moral transition and transmission internalization. In the other sides, pesantren is also an education that can play the empowerment role and civil society transformation effectively . Kiai as a  leader of  pesantren has also an  important  role  in developing pesantren tradition  to  form  institution character  that  can differentiate with  the other. Because institution character as organization identity can be meant as a substantial point of the institution competitiveness  in  forming  process  that  indicates  two points, namely:  the growth of scientific tradition and the clean system of pesantren education management. This  research  is to answer research questions by analyzing: 1.  the structure of culture organization developed by Kiai as  leader, 2. Kiai  leadership  in keeping culture organization, 3. the similarity and difference of  the three pesantren. Based on qualitative paradigm, this research uses qualitative paradigm in terms of  phenomenological approarch which is meaningful  in comprehending  event  in  relation  to people  in  certain  situation. The process of this research uses multi-case studies because it is as inquiry that investigates empirically the phenomena in the real life context. The naturalistic paradigm chooses a sample purposively or by theoretically , three pesantren, namely: Pondok Modern Gontor, Lirboyo Kediri and Pesantren Tebuireng Jombang. The reason of  choosing the setting is based on some consideration on their specialty, uniqueness, interest, and suitable with the research topic.

Abstract

An article discusses the concept of al-’urf which became one of the foundations of making Islamic law. This concept makes the law by taking something familiar in society, which have become their habit and were united with their lives, whether in the form of deeds or words. With note that when making Islamic law is surely without violating the basic teachings in Islam from the Qur’an and al-Sunnah. The application of al-‘urf leads to the acceptance of sharia by the community, without having to abandon the basic principles of Islam. The study of this concept is also the answer for contemporary Muslim thinkers who often encourage and insist to reform Islamic law through the mechanism of deconstruction and adapting to the principles of human rights. What they did is dangerous, because it changed the basic teaching in Islam, such as the obligation of fve times prayer, Ramadan fast, hajj, and so forth. In relation to al-’urf, these contemporary thinkers usually take up all the prevailing customs in society to make Islamic law, even these customs are contrary to the religious teachings. Through the study of the classical and contemporary books of jurisprudence, this article explains that Islamic teachings are appreciative and cooperative in addressing the growing cultural phenomenon in society. Islam still adopts and takes traditions that exist in society as one of the foundation of Islamic law, as long as those do not contrary to the teachings of Islam.

Abstract

This paper discussed the encounter of Indonesian Muslims toward the idea of secularism. Secularism since its rise in Europe in the 18th century has spread all over the world. Supporters of secularism have assumed that secularism is undeniable. People eventually will hold it and apply it in their life, including in the public space. However, in the context of the relationship between Islam and state in Indonesia, secularism thesis has been proven failed. During the Indonesian history, the relationship between Islam and state has been a hot discourse even until recently. Yet, this paper concluded that one thing is clear; Indonesian people, especially Indonesian Muslims, have rejected secularism. In the meantime, some have rejected theocratic state either. Muslims then have endlessly endeavored to reformulate a viable synthesis on the relationship between Islam and state in Indonesia. What Indonesia has now is among the efforts of Indonesian Muslims to have a better formulation on how Islam plays its role in the public space, including in the political sphere.

Abstract

This article discusses the problems of renewal religious studies offered by the contemporary Islamic thinker of Algerian, Mohammed Arkoun. Arkoun study model is knownas‘Applied Islamology’, which is a method that comes from various different ideas to build a mutually reinforcing method. Basically, these models are influenced by an orientalist Richard Bestide, so what Arkoun produced wasactually a shynthesis. In his study, Arkoun adopted social-sciences approaches and Western humanities approaches, i.e. deconstruction. This study is a model of theological crticism on various Islamic studies which Arkoun considered itover based on Turath-centric and logos-centric andeven caused Islamic science to retrogress. In general, this model studied Islam based onthe paradigm ofhumanism approach. This approach delivers on two issues. First, because it involves a wide range of scientifical approaches, the study becomes overlapped with each other. Therefore, it is not easy to trace where this study will occur except the effect of deconstruction. Second, the concept of eclecticism used in his study isto releasethe Islamic tradition fromtheological and ideological- boundaries. He opened fullylogical explorationbeyond ideological prejudices, ethnicity, or religion. The method results in erroneous impressionof God, religion, divine revelation, prophets, and any otherreligious concepts. In essentials, Applied Islamology has a problem in the realm of theology and epistemology.
