Abstract

Reading comprehension is an essesntial component of EFL learning; however, a lot of students in SMP still have difficulty in understanding English texts due to limited vocabulary, ineffective reading strategies, and dependence on word-by-word translation. The current study aimed to explore the implementation of the skimming technique in teaching reading comprehension among seventh-grade students at SMP Shirothol Mustaqim. The study investigated how the skimming technique was implemented, students’ responses toward skimming technique use, and the challenges encountered during its implementation. A qualitative case study design was used in the study. The study involved one English teacher and 20 students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, document analysis, and supporting reading assessment results. The data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s (2021) reflexive thematic analysis. The findings revealed three major themes. First, the skimming technique was systematically integrated into pre-reading, while-reading, and post-reading activities, enabling students to activate prior knowledge and identify the main ideas before engaging in detailed reading. Second, students responded positively to the strategy, demonstrating increased engagement, confidence, participation, and improved reading performance, as reflected in the increase of the mean assessment score from 75 to 100. Third, the implementation faced several challenges, including limited vocabulary knowledge, differences in reading proficiency, and time constraints during classroom instruction. The study concludes that the skimming technique can facilitate more strategic and interactive reading instruction when supported by explicit teacher guidance and appropriate scaffolding.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the spiritual potential from the perspective of Qur'anic exegesis and Hadith and to integrate it into the framework of Islamic ecotheology in order to develop a paradigm of ecological awareness based on spirituality. The study employed a qualitative approach using library research. Primary data sources consisted of the Qur'an, authentic Hadiths, and classical as well as contemporary tafsir literature, while secondary data were obtained from books and scientific journals related to ecotheology, Islamic spirituality, and environmental ethics. Data collection was conducted through documentation studies, while data analysis employed content analysis with an interpretative approach through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study indicate that the human spiritual structure, which includes the qalb (heart), nafs (self/soul), and ruh (spirit), functions as the center of moral consciousness that influences human ecological behavior. Qur'anic exegesis and Hadith also contain ecotheological values through the concepts of khalifah fil ardh (vicegerency on earth), mizan (balance), amanah (trust), and the prohibition of facade fil ardh (corruption on earth), all of which emphasize human responsibility in maintaining environmental balance. The integration of spirituality and ecotheology produces the paradigm of Islamic spiritual ecology, namely the conceptual relationship between tazkiyah al-nafs (self-purification), tawhidic consciousness, ecological ethics, and Islamic ecotheology. This study concludes that environmental crises are caused not only by social and material factors but are also closely related to the spiritual crisis of humanity. Therefore, strengthening spiritual awareness becomes an essential part of developing sustainable environmental ethics from an Islamic perspective.
