Abstract

The development of information and communication technology not only creates new forms of communication, such as longform journalism on online media, but also creates new audience. Audiences' media usage and gratifications are always changing in terms of which media they are using. The purpose of this study is to find out the use of Visual Interaktif Kompas (VIK) as one of the media that produces longform journalism on online media by the audience. Data of this research was analyzed using the MAIN model that identifies four capabilities owned by digital media, i.e. Modality, Agency, Interactivity, and Navigability. The MAIN model is a development of use and gratifications theory designed specifically for researching new media. This is a descriptive qualitative research with Robert K. Yin's case study method. The data collection in this research was completed by interviews and observation. Based on the results, VIK complies the classification of Modality, Agency, Interactivity, and Navigability that allow participants as readers to perform various activities such as obtaining real information, accessing information with an attractive look, accessing information equipped with multimedia elements, selecting contents that they want to read, interacting with the system, performing numbers of activities at a time, and others. However, in the Agency classification, VIK has not complied three out of five elements in it, i.e. Agency Enhancement, Community Building, and Bandwagon because VIK does not provide comment columns, forums, or something similar. Abstract

This descriptive study aims to explain how netizens discuss various topics related to the 2019 General Election in Indonesia. By taking the case of online discussion on social media platform of Twitter, the author examines some hashtags related to the online campaign of two running president and vice-president candidates, Joko Widodo-Ma'ruf Amin and Prabowo Subianto-Sandiaga Uno. Utilizing social network analytics, the author found that online conversations on Twitter regarding the topics of #DebatPilpres2019, #PrabowoMenangDebat and #DebatPintarJokowi most of the time are dominated by not-so-called popular accounts and might not be associated as political ‘buzzers.'; although the Twitter accounts of @jokowi and @prabowo are found to be two most discussed actors within the conversation. Here, the author argues that social media platforms like Twitter serve as mini-publics-where the discourse here is not always in parallel with the mainstream (mass media or people's) opinion. Moreover, people's engagement in political talks on social media as online politics should not be considered as less than an important part of the democratization process in Indonesia. Key words: political communication, hashtag politics, social media analytics, online politics

Abstract

Social media has transformed into a "free" advertising instrument. By using User-Generated Contents (UGC) technology, an instant publication about engaging activities in a particular area will encourage other people's interest to have the same experience. However, the effectiveness of tourism promotion turned out to have negative impacts, one of them is related to environmental issues because the behavior that has been published is not necessarily on the same track with the perspective of environmental conservation. It happened to Mount Kamojang and Papandayan nature reserve, West Java, where a part of the area has been converted into a nature tourism park. One reason for the change of status is to attract people's interest to visit the Kamojang and Papandayan areas. This interest could be seen from the many comments on social media that also promote the natural beauty of the place. By using a qualitative method with a case study approach, this study explains the dynamics involved in social media that influence the counter-productive behaviors in environmental issues. The results of the study show that social media contents have encouraged the public to access nature tourism areas, including the closed area in the Garut Regency. Additionally, the viral information was then used by stakeholders as a weapon to persuade the authorities to change the status of the area into a a tourist attraction. This study recommends a review of the policy related to the nature reserve's status amendment, considering the sustainability of environmental conservation in Indonesia. The speed and complexity of the telecommunications industry is the main reason for choosing the main theory in this study, which is the Situational Crisis Communication Theory (SCCT) developed by Coombs (2007). The telecommunications industry is one of the industries that vulnerable to crisis, moreover when telecommunications products such as smartphones and the internet have become one of the basic needs of every person. Using qualitative methods, the results of this study indicate that the application of SCCT in the telecommunications industry requires some special records. First, the need for a crisis marking system that is sensitive to the emergence of a potential crisis. Second, the response system should be more responsive because of the behavior of telecommunications customers who tend to be impatient and quickly spread negative news with their social media. Abstract

Working as a journalist is still aspired by some of Indonesia's young generation, called the millennials. However, the media industry landscape in Indonesia is rapidly changing in recent years due to digital disruption. Several printed media have to work hard to adopt digital tools as a publication platform to reach news consumer, while others have desperately managing to expand its audience applying convergence strategies. Meanwhile, some media industries which could not compete in the digital market have decided to stop their publication. Since 2014, there were several media stop operating their production. In many cases, the media closure is followed by termination of employment among journalists. This study finds that it has not only impacted the future of the former journalists but also has caused precariousness condition for a young journalist. These journalists were the young generation, or the millennials age 24-35 years. Some of the millennials had worked for more than a year and enjoyed the privilege as a journalist. But when digital disruption came and hit the media where they worked, most of these young age journalists had not registered nor joined in a labor union that could have helped advocate them when facing disagreement with the media company. Besides, from 2014 to 2017, it is a difficult time for the journalist to adapt in the midst of the transition from conventional media to digital media.
