Abstract

This study aims to investigating the effectiveness of using the tartil method in improving students' ability to read the Quran in elementary schools. This study uses a quantitative method with an experimental approach (true experimental pretest-posttest control group design). Data were taken from sixtysix students by means of pre-test and post-test of reading the Quran skills. All students involved are samples of the population which are used as research objects. The research data were then analyzed using descriptive statistics using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS Windows 22.0). Overall, the results of the study indicate that the use of the tartil method in learning the Quran is very effective because it can improve students' abilities in reading the Quran. Therefore, the tartil method can be used as an alternative in learning the Quran.

Abstract

There are still a number of less skilled readers in higher degree education where academic texts are staple needs (Hellekjaer, 2009). This study investigated a technique to help students increase their reading ability in TOEFL reading section. A technique named Notetaking technique was implemented during two cycles of classroom action research. There were 3 meetings for each cycle. The participants were 17 Economics students who are taking TOEFL Preparation course at Universitas Syiah Kuala, Aceh, Indonesia. The result from cycle one showed no increase since the average only incline to 38.58. Then in cycle 2, there was a significant increase reaching 45.11 (which is the minimum TOEFL standard for the university). It can be deduced that this technique might not be appropriate for large classes as it demands individual assistance. Besides, a good skill of organizing information is fundamental in this strategy to maximize the students’ effort in answering the TOEFL questions during the test.

Abstract

The aim of This study explored Jordanian math teachers’ beliefs, practices, and belief change in implementing mobile applications in education Learning mathematics is a major focus of educational institutions at all levels and technology has long been an important teaching tool in the field of mathematics. Multiple sources of qualitative data were generated including metaphors, lesson plans and interviews with 17 math teachers. Although teachers considered Implementing mobile applications in education as an effective method that benefit student learning and they demonstrated progress in changing their beliefs moving from subject to didactic dimension through Implementing mobile applications in education, their practices remained partially aligned with their perceived belief changes. This discrepancy could be attributed to several encountered challenges, including teachers’ lack of confidence, difficulty in facilitating student collaboration, structural constraints, additional workload, and the lack of school and peer support. Results suggest the need for different types of “problems” and approaches such as more direct instruction, and higher feasibility in teachers’ autonomy when Implementing mobile applications in education. Outcome of this study has a few implications. First, discrepancy between belief and practice of implementing mobile applications. identified in this study suggests that appropriate and sufficient professional development activities are needed. The MOE and schools in Jordan should further articulate policy goals and standards that facilitate student-centered approaches for teachers. System and institutional supports such as reducing teachers’ workload, providing sufficient time for students’ activities during implementing mobile applications. sessions and for teachers’ collaboration, and involving both students and teachers in defining.

Abstract

The study aims to determine whether the mathematics learning outcomes of students who learn discovery learning are better than students who learn conventionally. It also aims to find out whether the mathematics learning outcomes of students with high initial abilities and low initial abilities with discovery learning are better than students who learn conventionally. This type of research is a Quasi Experiment with quantitative approach design and used was a randomized control group only design with treatment by blocks. The population in this study were students of class VII  Islamic private junior high school or MTsS Darussalam Ampiang Parak, Sutera Sub District, Pesisir Selatan. The research sample was randomly selected, namely students of class VII.1 as the experimental class and VII.2 as the control class. The research data were obtained from the results of the initial ability test and the final test given after the experiment was carried out. Data analysis using t test. The results of the analysis show that: 1) The mathematics learning outcomes of students with discovery learning model are better than those taught by conventional learning, 2) Mathematics learning outcomes of students with high initial abilities and students with low initial abilities with discovery learning learning models of learning arebetter than students with high initial abilities. taught by conventionallearning. The results could be a solution for teachers to provide learning to develop students' ability invention, especially in the discovery of mathematical concepts and problem solving both in learning and in daily life

Abstract

English for Specific Purposes in tertiary level puts its importance to Need Analysis (NA) process for syllabus design. This present research is concerned with designing ESP syllabus for Mechanical Engineering students in tertiary level through need analysis. The research aims to identify the immediate needs of the Mechanical Engineering students and design appropriated syllabus based on students’ needs using Target Situation Analysis (TSA) and Present Situation Analysis (PSA). In order to achieve the research’s objectives, a questionnaire was administered to a total 50 respondents. The finding of the research shows that among 4 basic English skills, listening skill emerged as the most important skill that students’ really need, followed by speaking, reading, and writing. Thus, this research suggests that ESP teachers should design more varied activities on listening course that students will have the competence to apply the skills later in future life context.

Abstract

The current study aimed at 1) developing a portfolio-based learning model at Madrasah Tsanawiyah, and 2) testing the validity, practicality, and effectiveness of the developed learning model. The design of the study was Research and Development (RD) using a 4-D model (defines, design, develop, and disseminate). Teachers’ books, students’ workbooks, a learning model, and validity, reliability, and practicality test were designed to support the implementation of the learning model to the teaching and learning process in the classroom. The qualitative data were collected through observation, interviews, and field notes, while the quantitative data were obtained from test and questionnaires. The data then were used to develop a final portfolio-based learning model. The findings revealed that 1) the learning instruments of portfolio-based learning model such as teachers’ book, students’ workbook, the learning manual could be adopted to implement the model; 2) the learning model was valid, practical and effective. The learning model triggered students’ engagement to study academic writing. It is concluded that the development of a portfolio-based learning model motivated students to study academic writing. Therefore, using a portfolio-based learning model was recommended to discuss further in different research.

Abstract

This article analyzes the integration model between science and religion in Malaysian and Indonesian Higher Education. So far, the dichotomy of science and religion is considered to be one of the causes for the exit of the Islamic world from the Western world. In this century, educational institutions in the Islamic world began to re-select the integration pattern of science. This study uses qualitative methods, by collecting data through observation, visiting two higher education institutions studied, and conducting in-depth interviews with relevant parties, namely the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) in Malaysia and Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) in Indonesia. Data collection is also done by searching documents and referral sources in various data sources available online. From the research conducted, it was found that, integration carried out by Islamic universities in Malaysia and Indonesia was to open faculties and study programs without any religious or public claims. Everything is the same, and there are no restrictions on the rules for students based on religion to enter into it. So, education is inclusive, it can be for anyone. This model succeeded in advancing Islamic educational institutions.
