Abstract

In the millennial era, social-community conditions that have become increasingly urbanised have resulted in the loss of original roots. For some communities, the loss of their culture can be articulated by a loss of identity. One of the efforts to preserve culture and plants is to preserve and sustain traditional villages and encourage government programs to increase the number of traditional villages to be declared as ?Tourism Traditional Villages?. This study aims to unravel the tourism potential of seven Sasak traditional villages related to traditional buildings, art performances, plant usage, and other economic potentials that could be created. The study was conducted by visiting and interviewing local residents in seven Sasak traditional villages on Lombok Island in Indonesia. The results of the study indicated that tourism traditional villages can provide many tangible benefits, which can be felt directly by villagers, such as employment or additional income, and intangible benefits, e.g. preservation of local culture, including cultural and plant knowledge. Traditional villages can also provide resilience and independence for their people to be a source of food, especially for vegetables and fruits, so they do not depend so much on the availability of consumer goods in traditional markets, which are subject to price fluctuations.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This article discusses the connection between territory and socio-cultural construction of the Mollucan. First, it concerns on the connection between spatial and socio-cultural construction of Muslim and Christians communtieis. In this regard, it argues that the spatial segregation between these two communities, to some extents, reflects or is associated with their socio-cultural differences. Of course, the apparent differences stemp from the fact that their religions are not the same. This means that all aspects of their live concern on religious belief and rituals must be different. Apart from this, Muslim communities in Maluku Tengah (Central Maluku) are considered as more devoted to tradition as they still speak the ?language of earth? (bahasa tanah, vernacular language), while the Christians are not. On the contrary, in Maluku Tenggara (Southeastern Maluku), it is the Christians who are regarded as more tighted by tradition as they still use lela (antique cannon), gong and traditional rituals on their marriage. Second, it demonstrates the political economy of sea territory. Referring to conflict over coastal boundaries between Sather and Tutrean villagers, I observe that control over sea territory is one of the indexes by which social boundary between the noble (mel-mel) and the commoner (ren-ren) are drawn. Thus, when there is a precedence contestation between these two social groups, defining coastal boundary is one of the contested issues. Reffering to other cases, conflicts triggered by lift-net (bagan) operation, I show how ethnicity defines ?otherness,? which, then used to exclude people from accessing a communal sea territory. Finally, I demonstrate how local leaders make use the practice of marine communal property rights (hak ulayat laut) as a political capital to win the position of the village leader (kelapa desa).

Abstract

Ketoprak dor is a performing art that lives and develops in North Sumatra. Its appearance began with the sending of Javanese as contract workers for tea plantations. The transmigration of the kuli kontrak formed a new layer of society with the participation of existing social and cultural growth. They did their Javanese activities as usual before being sent as contract coolies, including throwing parties. From this party, there was a desire to make a ketoprak performance. This show is called the ketoprak dor. Based on this, the author conducted a ketoprak dor study in 2009 and 2012 using a semiotic approach by Morris (Zaimar, 2008). The author's semiotic review is done to facilitate the tracking of history and description of the ketoprak dor in North Sumatra Province. From the research that the authors did mention the ketoprak dor is almost extinct swallowed by the times. In fact, the ketoprak dor is actually no longer only owned by Javanese people, but has become the property of Deli Malays. Adapting Javanese people plus Malays who want to accept openness is a big capital of this cultural hybrid process.

Abstract

The election of Donald Trump as the 45th President of the United States of America increased public conversations about the situations of immigrants living in the country. Trump employed the issue of immigrants as a powerful weapon to win the presidential race. In my view, the way the American people excitedly responded to and accepted Trump?s ideas indicates how racism against immigrants still plays a pivotal role in the US political and social realms. My reflection on this hot issue on immigration led me to wonder about some of my colleagues and friends from Indonesia who migrated to the US. How are they? Are they in a good situation?

Abstract

This article is an anthropological and historical reflections about the concept of nationalism which takes place on the dialectical interpretation on local and national identities in Maluku context. The main idea is on the effort to discover historical nexus about nationalism interpretatively that often disappear behind the grand narrative discourses about separatism of RMS (Republic of South Maluku) revolt whenever discussing the place of Maluku on Indonesian political map. By using combined methods of social hermeneutics and political anthropology paradigms, the elaboration developed in this article is unfolding new narrative of nationalism that might not be seen simply through centralistic viewpoint but analyzing various socio-political and historical interpretations of small narratives as the center of perspectives that must be considered within the discourse of Indonesian nationalism.

Abstract

Abstract

Theoretical assumption which underlies this article is that theatre in general and traditional local theatre in particular can be treated as a social document of its supporting community. However, the process of documentation usually takes place only symbolically at various levels of signification. In the case of traditional theatres in Java it is very important to establish where to find out what is documented and how it is conveyed. In the case of Lenong theatre of Betawi community it is surprising that the political chaos in J 998 in Jakarta is hardly worked out except in very limited form in its dialog.
