Abstract

Background: Student peformance assessment during problem-based learning (PBL) discussion is still debatable. One of the assessments that applies adult learning principle is self-assessment  (SA). In fact, many medical schools prefer to use tutor assessment than SA because it is considered less accurate. Many studies have reported that the accuracy of SA is poor because of their own lack of knowledge and SA skills.  This literature review aims to explore deeper in SA and its basic principles in designing SA instrument for PBL discussion in medical school.Method: This study was conducted using narrative review method. Ten articles were reviewed. Five articles were chosen from google search engine and the other five from medical education textbooks. Results: SA is the ability of a student to observe, analyze and assess his own performance based on the criteria and he determines a way to fix it. SA skills that have been practiced during  PBL discussions will equip the students to become future health professionals who are competent in determining their own continuous professional development (CPD) programs. When designing a SA instrument, one needs to explore these five main issues, including acceptance, accuracy, power, feasibility and context. Conclusion: SA is the most effective assessment to assess a student’s achievement in PBL discussion if implemented properly. The completion of SA should be made in the normal context and one must explore the five main issues constantly so that SA can be done properly and well.

Abstract

Background: There are two important characteristics that need to be considered by the institution of medical education today, the first is about the importance of using assessment as a measuring instrument and the role of curriculum in producing good quality graduates. UKDI is only one exit to be a doctor that will certainly have varied impact on students from the expected and unexpected. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact on student learning UKDI on which will follow UKDI related to the allocation of time for study, the number of hours of study, the distribution of learning, the selection of learning resources and learning materials selection.Method: The research method is qualitative study that use Focus Group Discussion to get the data. The number of participants is 61 people devided into 6 groups. That group of students at the Faculty of Medicine with the accreditation of A, B and C respectively - each of the public and private colleges. Results: The results of the qualitative analysis portrait that UKDI has an impact on the student learning. The impact of learning that occurs associated with two things, the first is related to the quality of student learning and the second related to student metacognitive regulation. The general quality of the student learning that occurs in the face of UKDI is still low quality, learn by rote. For metacognitive regulation is related to the allocation, the number and distribution of learning, the selection of learning materials, the selection of learning resources, the selection of a place of learning, learning strategies, learning to maintain consistency, and monitor the process of learning and improvement. Conclusion: UKDI have an impact on the learning of medical students, both in the quality of learning and metacognitive regulation.

Abstract

Background: Student-centred learning is characterized by constructive, collaborative and contextual learning; derived from the constructivism theory. We studied the principle of “Tut Wuri Handayani” / TWH (to follow the learners to achieve their utmost potentials) which was initiated in 1922 by Dewantara, who was the first Ministry of Education, Republic of Indonesia.Method: A qualitative method with ‘content-analysis’ was used to study the articles written by Dewantara published in Indonesian newspapers between 1920-1960. We reflected the articles into current evidences of student-centred learning principles. Validations were done through three times focus group discussions (FGDs) by 30 students of a master’s of health professional education program and in-depth interview with two national experts in higher education. Results: In the period of early 20th century, Dewantara’s ideas had arrived at ‘contextual’ and ‘collaborative’ principles; the basis of current philosophy of student-centred learning. Dewantara’s exceptional initiatives were: (1) emphasizing equity between learners and teachers regardless the strong hierarchical social culture among Indonesian, (2) making the best use of cultural events and instruments as rigorous learning resources to enhance the sensory abilities and social sensitivity of the students towards community’s needs, (3) promoting observation-based learning to promote self-directed learning by helping the students to reflect on their mistakes, to be independent thinkers and to be responsible persons, to minimize gaps between attitudes and behaviours, and to provide role models and opportunities for students to actively participate in learning. Conclusion: “Tut Wuri Handayani” or ‘to follow the learners to achieve their utmost potentials’ revealed as a student-centred learning principle emphasizes life-long learning. Dewantara may be regarded as one of the world-wide leaders in education.

Abstract

Background: To keep up with current development in medicine, every doctor is demanded to be able to do continuing medical education (CME) after finishing their medical degree. However, health education institutions are responsible to make sure their graduates are able to do so by developing their self regulated learning (SRL) skills. Therefore, we developed a learning module that not only use adult learning approach but also maximizing the teachers’ role in the teaching and learning process by using a programmatic assessment model.Method: The learning activities mostly used SCL approach (62,7%), and were comprised of 8 different learning method. The assessment activities were done by using a combination of assessment method to assess the student’s cognitive, skills, and professional behavior. The student was also asked to do a self evaluation using reflective writing assignment, and each of the student also received 360 degree. Each student was assigned to 1 mentor to guide him/her throughout the course. Results: More than half of the students (52,24%) claimed that they were ‘forced’ to take the course because they didn’t get into their first choice elective block. However, at the end of the block, all of the students had a change of perspective and agreed that this block was interesting and useful for them. Conclusion: The students are able to be independent if we, as teachers, maximized our role as facilitators and mentors, and give the students bigger autonomy in their study.

Abstract

Background: One of scheduling problems in educational sector currently was the course scheduling in college or well known as University Course Timetabling Problem (UCTP). The UCTP was comprehensive because of the policy difference among the university, faculties, and departments.  The Faculty of Medicine Universitas Gadjah Mada, which organizes a block system has a different and more complex scheduling type than other faculties with non-block system. The porpose of this research was to build a mathematic model of block system UCTP in Faculty of Medicine Universitas Gadjah Mada to optimize the scheduling process time and results.Method: This research was conducted by dividing the scheduling problem into 4 sub – scheduling problems that are sequential, which are the scheduling of the 5 primary courses (lecture, panel discussion, practical sessions, tutorial, and skills laboratory), scheduling topics for each course, student’ group scheduling, and classroom scheduling. The problems are then modeled in the form of integer goal programming. Results: The block system scheduling model in Faculty of Medicine Universitas Gadjah Mada by considering topic and possibility of unavailability room using Sequential Three-Stage Integer Goal Programming has successfully developed and well verified. Conclusion: The model developed in this study is able to produce a schedule that meets all hard constraint in less than 24 hours. The result was more efficient compared to the previous trial-and-error method that consumed 30-45 days.

Abstract

Background: Doctors in rural and remote areas in eastern Indonesia, particularly North Maluku (northern part of the Moluccas Islands), are burdened with difficulties in their daily practice due to shortage of radiology or laboratory devices and other medical specialties. Travel distance and cost sometimes made referral to a better health facility impossible. They also have limited accessibility to live Continuing Medical Education (CME), due to relatively high travel cost and limited health professionals remaining while they are absent. However, in this challenging situation, they still obliged to deliver the most optimal medical services possible. In some ways, such setting is more challenging than working as a doctor in urban area.Method: This paper derived its data from scientific journal publications, newspaper and also direct interview. Results: Online CME may be a very promising method to empower doctors in rural and remote settings. More awareness to the significance of CME, especially, to rural and remote doctors is needed. Further advocacy and collaboration among stakeholders are needed to support this idea, which is relevant not only to rural and remote doctors in North Maluku, but also in other eastern parts, and perhaps in other remote areas in entire Indonesia. Conclusion: Online CME, as proven by evidence-based findings, will reduce professional isolation and equip them cognitively. This empowerment will ultimately benefit patients and, indirectly, other sectors as well.

Abstract

Background: Indonesia medical education recruitment system recruits students directly from high school who had been influenced by mostly teacher centered learning. As part of pedagogical approach in higher education, those students will be obligatory to learn independently and effectively. Self-directed learning (SDL) is an important aspect in latest medical educational evidence which would determine students’ successfulness in learning. Self-directed learning readiness (SDLRS) is influenced by several factors including motivation, age, culture, and previous education experience. Today, the admission process in Indonesia is based on knowledge-test based only. This study aims to reveal correlation between several factors which influence students’ Self Directed Learning Readiness (SDLRS).Methods: This study used SDLRS questionnaire as a valid and reliable toll to measure the students’ self directed learning readiness and correlate with those several factors.Result: From 540 distributed questionnaires, 412 questionnaires returned back. The Spearman correlation showed significant ratio between students SDLRS score and students’ motivation. While, the analysis on age showed that age of 20 has significant ratio with students’ SDLRS score. Conclusion: among age, previous education experience, and culture; students’ internal motivation  should be considered as important factor for students’ SDLRS which will determine their successfulness in learning in medical education. These factors should be regarded as one requirement of students’ admission in medical education.

Abstract

Background: The study explores the factors that affecting the readiness to (self-directed learning readiness) in the context of PBL is still rare, especially when in fact unprepared students in the initiative and the desire for self-learning, a lack of understanding of students on independent learning and interpretation mischaracterized the self-learning (self directed learning) is still frequently encountered. This study aimed to measure simultaneously identify factors that influence student SDLR in the first, second and third at the Medical Faculty of Hasanuddin University.Method: through two stages (sequencing), which combines two research approaches, namely qualitative as the main approach (dominant) and quantitative approaches as facilitators (less dominant). data collection with questionnaires and focus group discussions. The number of subjects quantitative 399 people (143 people from the first year, 152 the second year and 104 people from the third year), while for FGD about 18 people who set out with purposive sampling. Distributing questionnaires carried out in advance to obtain SDLR categories of high, medium and low, followed by FGD each batch by category SDLRnya. The analysis starts with the transcription process then the coding process. Results: This study shows that the average score lowest SDLR owned by First-year students FK UNHAS while the highest SDLR owned by Second year students. Not found SDLR category lower because students have had plenty of experience of active and independent learning that develops steadily. There are several factors that affect SDLR construct the desire to learn, self-control and self-management.Conclusion: Factors that affect SDLR the first year students, second and third in the FK Unhas divided into two, namely: (1) internal factors which consist of physical health, the availability of leisure time, hobby or avocation, self maturity, and intelligence; (2) external factors which consists of the support of family and friends, faculty facilities, problems, relationships between peers, and the influence of parents and friends
