Abstract

Background: In order achieving deep learning in tutorial process, collaboration among member of tutorial group becomes important factor. The quality of collaboration is determined by the students’ interaction which is influenced by students’ perception sourced from culture. This study aimed to reveal the relationship between students’ cultural perception with their interaction in tutorial.Method: This study used quantitative approach with distributing questionnaire to students in lecturer session during June – July 2012. The Pleijers et al questionnaire was used in this study. While question for cultural perception were extracted from theoretical background: teacher dependencies, group influence, learning orientation, ethnic influence, and response to feedback. Pearson or Spearman correlation test was chosen for further analysis. Results: There is correlation between students’ interaction with their perspectives since each type of interaction had significant r-value with specific students’ perspectives. Explorative and cumulative reasoning type of interaction could be endangered by students who have negative learning orientation, easily influenced by inactive group, and negative response to feedback. While handling conflict type of interaction is influenced by students’ perception on their ethnicity and response to feedback. Conclusion: Expected interaction during tutorial is complex situation which is influenced by students’ perspectives. Thus also involve teacher as tutor who also has perspectives derived from culture. Another research on tutor derived culture perspectives should be further explored.

Abstract

Background: Most clinical students still have difficulties in clinical reasoning process. Previous study mentioned that reflection and metacognition are factors could influence clinical reasoning. This study aimed to measure the effect of reflection, metacognition, age, sex, duration of clinical rotation, duration of undergraduate program taken by students, and students’ final remark on undergraduate program to students’ clinical reasoning.Method: This study was a quasi-experimental pretest postest control group design, conducted at RSUD Dr Moewardi Surakarta. We selected 185 clinical students by purposive sampling technique. The study used the Metacognitive Awareness Inventory (‘the MAI’), Motivation scale on Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (‘the MSLQ’), and Script Concordance Test as instruments. The analyses used multiple linier regressions. Results: The intervention of reflection learning increased clinical reasoning 1,11 unit (p=0,319); The increase of 1 unit score metacognition decreased clinical reasoning 0,01 score (p=0,806), increasing one semester duration of undergraduate program decreased clinical reasoning 1,17 score (p=0,297), increasing students’ final remark on undergraduate program increased clinical reasoning 15,98 score (p=0,006), female students had 1,97 lower score of clinical reasoning than male (p=0,103), increasing one month of duration clinical rotation increased clinical reasoning 0,01 score (p=0,958), increasing one score of motivation increased clinical reasoning 0,01 score (p=0,529). Conclusion: Clinical learning and metacognition can not influence clinical reasoning significantly. Clinical teacher and clinical students should be familiarized with reflection learning. Further researches are needed to exploring influencing factors to clinical reasoning.

Abstract

Background: Peer Assisted Learning is an active discussion and cooperative learning method within the framework of a partnership in the peer-aged group with the formal structures of the course. PAL is widely seen to be actualised in two modes of operational implementation, which is refer to as “horizontal” and “vertical” peer support. Vertical method was chosen for this research. Method: This research was used causal-comparative design. Tutees for this research was the students of Faculty of Medicine Universitas HKBP Nommensen from batch 2013 who were undergoing block Respiratory System. Tutees were divided into two groups : 24 students in the control group and 25 students in the treatment group. Both of these group consisted of five tutorial groups in which each group consisted of 4-5 students. Whereas the tutor for the treatment group was 5 students from batch 2011. Pre-test and post-test was given to all of the tutees. This research used a questionnaire modified from Clinical Teaching Preference Questionnaire (CTPQ). Results: Pre-test and post-test was analyzed using dependent T-test and Wilcoxon, and the result showed that there were significant enhancement for both of group (p ˂ 0,05). The result from CTPQ indicated most of the students strongly agree that this method was very helpfull in anatomy lab (4,40 ± 0,96). Conclusion: PAL method provided many benefits in learning process including improved social interaction between students and independence in learning.

Abstract

Background: Several elements of PBL have been identified and prepared with a questionnaire to be reused. Variables of PBL elements that influence students' learning decisions are assessed using a questionnaire of PBL elements that affect students’ learning decisions. This study is one part of a study reported in a different journal of medical education. The objective of this study was to validate a questionnaire of PBL elements that influence learning decisions of students in FKIK UMYMethods: A total of 584 students from major A, B, C, and D in FKIK UMY on the introductory tutorial groups with Indonesian as discussion language were invited to fill out a questionnaire. Construct validity was assessed by testing the validity of the items, Crönbach alpha, factor analysis, convergent and discriminate validity. Results: A total of 582 students of the major A, B, C, and D FKIK UMY on the tutorial groups with Indonesian as the language of instruction participated in the study (response rate 99.6%). Data showed that the questionnaire on PBL elements that affect student learning decisions have a high construct validity. Conclusion: The questionnaire of PBL elements that influence students’ learning decisions in Indonesian version is valid and can be reused.
