Abstract

The trading activity in Indonesia, particularly in ancient Papua has depicted that the medium of exchange become an important thing in transaction activity. It can be inferred that the trading activity in the past was also done by the tribes who lived in the mid-mountain like Ngalum community. The medium of exchange that they used was siwol/seashell. The use of siwol, as a medium of exchange, nowadays has changed for it has been influenced by official exchange medium (rupiah). Thus this currency has become the official exchange medium for Ngalum Community.

Abstract

Up until now there is still much confusion about ethnoarchaeological research in archaeological community in Indonesia. There are many archaeologists who could not distinguish between ethnographic and ethnoarchaeological research. Therefore, after the evaluation of ethnoarchaeological research done in more than 20 years ago, there is a necessity to rethink about ethnoarchaeological research. In brief, ethnography in archaeology is an effort to depict all of the archaeological activities and ideas which tries to put the past (archaeology) in the context of society today (ethnography). The ethnoarchaeological research is not a way to find the truth in the past but an effort to increase the faith upon the phenomenon that might be happened in the past.

Cultural resources in Indonesia, particularly in Maluku are invaluable. Therefore, it won’t be an exaggeration if we say that the cultural potency in Indonesia is rich and plentiful. The government’s concept on development nowadays is about how to develop every sector in Indonesia, particularly on culture and tourism. This is reasonable for the cultural identity of a nation reflects the identity of the nation itself, which can be measured by the various attraction, local wisdom, cultural resources (archaeological relic), language, and religion that it has. Then in Indonesia, those cultural products become a part of the multiculturalism in socio-cultural community.
